When he had first arrived in New York Grayson didn't know a soul. He had landed in JFK and then crashed in a cheap hotel until he found a job and an apartment. Only after that did he start hanging out with people in his classes, but most of them stayed as acquaintances. They weren't the sort of people who were into the same hobbies that Gray had and for a while it was just life with him chatting to people he knew but wouldn't really consider a friend; at least not like the friends he had left back in New Zealand. Things were different now and it seemed he was meeting more people all the time who he might consider calling in an emergency or hanging out with when the weekends rolled by. It was good to have something more in New York than just school and work. He had never given much thought to if he'd return home after he was done with university, but if he had good and loyal friends then he might just be swayed by a future in New York City.
Laughing, Grayson shook his head and grinned. “Oh no, what have I started?” He asked rhetorically, knowing just from the look on Rhiannon's face that it was an idea she was not about to let go of. He'd be surprised if their entire group of friends didn't know about the idea come Monday morning when they were all back to their usual lives and routines. “And I can see you finding it your job to make that happen.” Ridiculous bets like that were mostly how Grayson had landed himself in trouble back in high school, but they caused no harm and usually brightened up people's day just by letting them all laugh at him. It was the sort of thing he took in his stride. He could only laugh when she called him an ass and slugged him in the arm. It was a common insult from the people who knew him and he never took it too heart.
Dancing was always going to be a good way to keep the night alive. The floor was packed with people already and it looked like more were coming in. Chuckling when Rhi pointed out that he was the one with something to prove, Grayson decided to flip the tables on her. “Well you still have to prove you're not a lightweight!” He replied, stooping down to make sure she could hear the challenge in his tone. He obviously wasn't going to find something to trick her into on the dance floor, but maybe the bar was a different matter entirely.

Rhiannon was never one to back down from a bet or a challenge. That was how she managed to make so many friends for a girl who spent days in front of her drawing desk, forgetting about food or water in her usual trances. She knew she could be a recluse; it was the whole reason she begged her brother to move in with her. She wanted her independence but at the same time, she knew herself well enough to know she could never live alone. When the time came when Reese wanted to move out, she would have to find someone to move in with her; or sublet her apartment and move in with her Uncle. She loved the man and knew he would force her out into the real world, but she didn’t want to interrupt his life, and living with the bachelor would do just that. But those little bets she made with strangers over silly things like if the guy in front of them would drop his wallet or stutter talking to the pretty barista was how she made friends. Doing just that at a concert was how she met Allela and from there, she hardly had a quiet night. Rhiannon would always be more grateful for that than words could express. “You, dear man, have created a monster.” Rhi said her eyes bright with the mischief this could lead to.
Grayson did have something to prove on the dance floor but as he’d just suggested, she had something to prove at the bar. “You’re buying.” She said, close enough so he could hear her as she grabbed his hand and dragged him over to the bar and their friends. “What have we here?” Rhi asked, eyes wide, looking between the pair of friends before looking back at Grayson. They were already looking as though they would be feeling no pain at all for the next month. Rhi wanted to be on that level so when the bartender set her friend’s next round of shots down, she ordered a few of her own, turning back to Grayson with her brow’s raised, asking if they were acceptable shots. Tequila, for Rhi would always be acceptable. “Can you handle that, Pretty boy?” She asked with a smirk because she just couldn’t help herself. They were there to party and Grayson challenged her when she said what he had. She was prepared to show him up, she just needed to know if he was ready to fall to a girl.

“If you're sexy then I am damn adorable.” Allela decided, knowing the latter to be entirely untrue. She would describe herself as the complete opposite of adorable if she was ever asked. “You're kidding me! You bring the most trouble!” Usually with Ryder she just grew frustrated with him over something he had done. To name a few she could list these past few months of “no” and “maybe some other time” and before that there was of course the girl who had started that. Allela had held herself back for Ryder's sake in the past, but if she ever saw Aimee again then she couldn't promise she'd hold anything in. The young Scot had too many toxic thoughts about her and what she'd just love to say or do. Only Ryder's feelings had kept her in line in the past but now...no. Allela wasn't thinking about that or mentioning it again now.
Shooting Ryder a look as she reached for the next still full glass, she tried to stand intimidatingly, but the slight sway she had sort of stole something away from her goal. “When...when do I ever call myself Ally?” She asked him. While it was her nickname and she didn't mind it, Allela very rarely used it. It was always Allela or Alley-Cat when she was speaking and had to include her own name. She aimed to poke him in the shoulder but with her vision not exactly straight anymore, she missed entirely and her second shot caught his chest. “Because I, I am the best you'll ever have.” The laughter spluttered from her lips when she realised how that sounded, but Allela did nothing to correct herself. With the amount of silly jokes about affection she and Ryder made when they were sober, her drunk mind felt like this would fit in normally with their banter. As of now Allela wasn't even trying to think before she spoke; she was just letting words tumble from her lips.
Looking up at him, Allela almost fell into his side which only prompted another round of drunken giggles from her. “Aww, stop it you sap. You'll make me cry.” She was teasing of course, but the jokes didn't have to end there. “Hey! Hey, Austin! Ryder wants us to be to-together forever! Celebration tequila!” She cheered, still giggling at nothing. This was the danger to hanging out at the bar, but Allela would only realise that in the morning when her head pounded and she felt like death. “Plan nothing until he gives you a ring!” Was Austin's advice as he swapped the drinks for cash, winking playfully. “Yeah, I need a ring, Ry-Ry.” She downed the shot and then spied Grayson and Rhi returning. She knew sooner or later that one pair would seek out the other and she was just glad that her and Ryder weren't on the dance floor. In their state they'd probably cause an accident. “We're drinking and making life long promises.” She slurred to Rhi, hooking her pinky finger with Ryder's as though she needed to explain what she meant. She threw her arm over his shoulders then for stability and ran her fingers through her hair. “We should write these, these promises down.” She told Ryder, her eyes wide like it was a brilliant idea.

To say Ryder was steady on his feet was like saying the pyramids were square; either were true. In fact, Ryder was more like the Leaning Tower of Pisa than the steady and sturdy pyramids. Not that he was complaining or anything; he was pretty sure he was too drunk to complain anyway. His mouth certainly couldn’t string the words together at least. His mouth was hardly doing a good job of stringing the safe words together! “Cute as a button, you are!” He said, laughing as though his words were the funniest joke he’d ever heard in his entire life. “No, I hook up with the trouble. There’s a difference.” He said, starting to slur his words a little bit. He didn’t know if Allela or anyone around them heard it but he definitely did. Of course, already he’d knocked back more drink than he had in a very long time.
“You just did.” Ryder pointed out grinning as he lifted his Jack and Coke to point at Allela before gulping some of the mixed drink back. He was acting like he’d won some bet or something but in reality, he didn’t even remember why they were talking about her nicknames. The lights of the club were blurring together and Allela kept moving so much he wasn’t sure if it was her, him or the alcohol making it happen. Laughing along with Allela, Ryder could only nod his head before he managed to figure out how to use words again. “Yes, yes you are.” He agreed collecting his next shot from the bar’s top. Neither one of them seemed to be censoring themselves before they spoke; they were just letting whatever was on the tip of their tongues free to cause as much trouble as they might.
“Easy there, Ally.” Ryder warned, leaning closer. “Someone might think you’re a girl. Running around with emotions like that.” He said between a giggle fit at the words pouring pas this lips. He was absolutely never going to be a comedian, and even when he did tell a joke it wasn’t all that funny but tonight, everything was just hilarious. Someone could have said hello to them and Ryder probably would have just burst out laughing. “Can’t do that. Don’t have one!” Ryder said, coherent enough to turn his lips down in a pout before knocking back the next in a line of shots. Ryder lifted their linked hands. “Promises!” He echoed, nodding his head. Allela leaning into his side automatically had Ryder wrapping his arm around her waist so she wouldn’t take a tumble and introduce her face to the floor. “Austin!” Ryder called to the bartender who was at the other end of the bar. “Austin! I need paper! Paper and, and a pen!”

Even with the night in full swing and with the club packed with costumed people of all shapes and sizes, Grayson was a tiny bit surprised to see Allela and Ryder in such a state. He expected them to be drunk but neither of them could stand upright for more than a few seconds! He didn't think he'd been with Rhi on the dance floor for that long and yet the state of those two made him wonder if hours had passed. Then again he knew what Allela could be like when she was in the vicinity of a bar. Grayson was just happy that he wasn't going to be either of them in the morning! Hungover would be putting it mildly and if either of them emerged before noon it would be a miracle. “When it comes to my poison, I'm not fussy.” he told Rhi honestly. There wasn't a drink Grayson had tried that he didn't like. Sure there were ones he preferred to others, but overall he had none on the list for things that made him gag just from the smell of them. When the shots came he watched Rhi down hers first before he polished his off. “So, are you going to keep playing it safe or you aiming to catch up to those two?” He grinned and cocked his thumb in the direction of the giggling messes that were Allela and Ryder. He didn't know who was holding who up but they both looked like they'd hit the floor sooner rather than later.
Their trip to the bar wouldn't last long though. After Grayson paid for another round of shots he had barely swallowed the liquid before the song changed and his eyes widened dramatically. “This is my tune!” He shouted, grabbing Rhi's hand and dragging her back through the sea of dancers. He never gave another thought to Allela or Ryder, but was more interested in jumping about to what he would probably say was one of his favourite songs of all time. It was a good job that he knew Rhi enjoyed dancing or else she'd really be in for some kind of hell with the way Grayson was spinning her around and pulling her about to the music, singing along just as loud. The drinking they could resume in a bit, but Grayson would be damned if he sat this one out; challenge or no challenge.

Rhiannon wanted this weekend to be about drinking and dancing. Now, only two in the group actually danced but the others didn’t need babysitters either. They were fine on their own, even if they were more than a little drunk. Trashed would have been the word Rhi would have used if she was about to say something about it out loud. But with drinks on the bar with her name on them, she didn’t put much worry into the pair of them. “I’ll happily drink what the bartender puts in front of me if you want to order the next round.” She said, grinning before she easily knocked them back without trouble. It didn’t hurt that she was actually a little on the thirsty side. She didn’t quite know how long they’d been on the dance floor but they’d been making quite the show of themselves so it could have easily only been a matter of minutes and they would have left her thirsty. She loved to dance, but fairly regular drink breaks were usually needed!
Rhiannon was not a fussy one either and would try anything once; twice if she was really on the fence about it. But it was either love it or hate it with her. Not usually a happy medium when it came to her drinks. “A birthday is no time to play anything safe.” She said, grinning. She had something to prove, even though they both knew she could hold her own in a battle of shots. She’d proved that well enough the last time they’d partied together. But it was her birthday and the whole point of a day like that was to get so drunk the only way to remember anything from the night were the blurry pictures taken throughout the night. She wanted to at least make to her bed under her own steam but other than that, she was really up for whatever. Rhi was lucky to have tossed the second round of shots back before Grayson was yelling over the music and dragging her away. It was a damn good thing she’d gone the flat shoe path with her costume or she would have had a rolled ankle by now! Not that it would have stopped her from dancing or anything but it would have put a damper on the mood until she’d swallowed enough shots to numb the pain. She would pat herself on the back later for picking out the Chucks for her Chuckie costume because there was no way she would have made it off the dance floor with the way Grayson was tossing her about like a life sized rag doll!

Allela shot Ryder a glare, but with the way the alcohol was starting to swim through her system it probably just came off as more of a squint. “Call me cute one more time, Ryder, and I'll kill you when you sleep.” She faux promised. She knew he did it just to torment her at the best of times, but she still threw the empty threats back at him, promising that one day she would make good on them. Allela did hear his next comment, but she chose to not reply. Tonight might have been about getting Ryder back out there into the world of fun and socialising, but she wanted to skip the step where they got drunk and talked about their feelings. It wasn't something Allela was a fan of and while she could force herself through it for Ryder if he wanted it, she didn't want to put a damper on the weekend by being the one to trigger it.
Flipping him off, Allela's attention remained on the drink she was finishing off. Her face was at the point of feeling numb from the drink, but Allela wasn't going to let it slow her or the night down. The challenge had been set between her and Ryder and Allela was not going to be the one to pause it for any reason. “I am a girl. I just hide it super-dooper well.” She admitted like it was some big secret. It was true that she wasn't one for talking about her feelings, but that was because Allela often expressed her affection through sarcastic comments or insults that she didn't really mean. The closest of her friends knew that about her. “Pssh, let down, Ryder.” Allela scoffed, pretending to be disappointed that there was no ring for him to pull out of a pocket. She didn't even know what they were really talking about or how they had gotten onto this conversation in the first place, but she didn't care. Drunk Allela never let anything worry her like this and she just acted in impulse, which wasn't always her greatest attribute.
“Sorry, I don't have anything.” When Austin failed them, Allela rolled her eyes and pulled a face. She downed the remainder of her drink and handed Ryder his for him to do the same. “Then we must find one! 'Mon.” Grabbing Ryder's hand she pulled him away from the bar and staggered towards the entrance to the club. She never gave a moment of thought to Rhiannon or Grayson, but instead her mind was on their mission. Outside when the air hit their faces and Allela could see just how blurry the alcohol had made her vision, she looked around at their choice of direction. “This way!” She decided, pointing to the right and pulling Ryder in that direction. The hotel might have been that way or it might have not, but they had things to find and somewhere had to provide them.

Ryder couldn’t see straight. Simple as that but he was determined not to lose this challenge to Allela. So the words coming out of his mouth weren’t of his choosing. They were just tumbling out following something Allela said and that was it. “No you won’t. You love me too much for that.” He said, chuckling. Their entire messed up, confusing conversation was starting to make little sense but it was still bringing on the laughs so that was something. Ryder never drank until he slurred his words. It had just never really appealed to him but this was his first night out in a million years and even Allela said she was going to make him catch up on all those weekends he missed out on.
“Gasp!” Ryder said, faking shock as he put his hand to his chest, over his heart. He moved quickly and a drop of his drink fell onto his shirt unnoticed. He wouldn’t be surprised come morning if his shirt was covered in unidentifiable stains. They’d all be alcohol but which ones were which would be the mystery. He finished off his drink, setting it on the bar before lifting his hands in surrender. “I’ll just have to find one then, won’t I?” He asked, more because of the disappointment that wasn’t actually there. Honestly, he wasn’t sure what they were talking about anymore. It all just seemed to be going in one ear, dancing through his brain and then by the time Allela said something else, the first bit was gone again. Obviously whatever he was saying was still making a bit of sense or they would have stopped talking by now just to laugh at their ridiculousness.
Ryder shook his head, sadly. “And you were doing so well, Austin.” Ryder was disappointed in the bartender for having all the alcohol but nothing to write with. What were they in, a bar?! Automatically taking the drink from Allela, he chugged it back until the glass was empty. “Coming!” He said, setting the glass down and following behind Allela until he caught up to her side. Ryder had to blink a couple times to clear his blurry vision and it did nothing at all. “Okay!” He said, stumbling behind Allela for a second before he righted himself. Not once did Ryder consider where Rhiannon and Grayson ran off to. He figured they probably returned to the dance floor to work off all the alcohol they’d consumed. It would have been a good idea for them, too. If only they were the type that danced.

Grinning, Grayson pushed the hair from his face. It was starting to fall out of the mess he had pulled it back into, but he didn't see the point in fixing any of that right now. It would only fall right back out again in a little while. “Ah, a girl after my own heart.” Grayson joked. In truth he did prefer it when a girl wasn't overly fussy about everything. They took the fun out of things and Grayson was the kind of guy who liked to act on the spur of the moment and not meticulously plan out every last detail to suit someone else's needs. He didn't mind adjusting little things here and there for someone, but the idea of doing something nice and having it thrown back at him because a girl had to find fault in everything. That was why Grayson made a point of befriending the likes of Rhiannon and Allela; they rarely fussed or moaned on a night out and just focused on the fun instead.
When it came to his own birthdays Grayson only demanded that he went out and got drunk. He always took the time off work to make sure it could happen on any day of the week and there was always a good group of friends to prop him up when a bar couldn't. “True; we only have a finite amount of them.” Gray agreed, nodding his shot glass at Rhi while also nodding his head. He didn't like to think about the day when he might be too old to go out and spend the weekend in the clubs. One day it would go from being normal to it looking pathetic or desperate and then Grayson didn't know what he would do with his life. He had no way of knowing what he'd be doing by that point in his life, but he didn't like to think about it either way. He'd have to grow up some day and it was a thought that terrified and slightly depressed him, which he didn't want to feel tonight.
When he pulled Rhi back onto the dance floor he never gave a second thought to their friends or what fate might befall them on this spooky night. He figured that when the time came they'd find them both using the bar to hold themselves up, but until then Grayson was happy to lose himself in the music and twirl Rhi around like neither of them had a care in the world. If the lady wanted to see him dance then it was exactly what she would get now.

Rhiannon wasn’t fussy person in general. The only thing she needed to have complete control over was her work. When it came to that, she was a total perfectionist. Everything else could come and go as it pleased, she was pretty open to whatever came her way but her work was another thing all together. It was the reason she fell into that little trance whenever she was working. She closed out everything surrounding her and just let the creativity fly. It annoyed her when people dragged her away but she also needed it just as much as it annoyed her. If they let her, Rhi knew she would work twenty-four seven with no breaks. Someone probably would have found her dead at her desk by now if she didn’t live with her brother and have friends constantly dragging her out into the fresh air of the outdoors. “Keep that up someone might think you’re flirting with me.” She teased, unable to help herself. She wasn’t putting much thought into the people around them but the few looks Grayson had been getting hadn’t gone unnoticed either. She got those looks, Grayson wasn’t half bad looking, but she didn’t get the dirty looks sent her way, she hadn’t been all over him; not purposefully anyway, even if she was the one that had challenged him to the dancing.
The birthday girl didn’t get to do much on her own birthdays; this was actually the first year she got to do anything on her own with her friends. So she did things for her friend’s birthdays instead. She planned things, searched out the best gifts for them because these things weren’t done for her. She was essentially making up for things that didn’t happen for her but it usually brought laughter and smiles to her friends faces so in the end of it all, she was okay. “That’s depressing. Drink up.” She said with an eye roll as she tossed back the next shot in the line. There would be a day when she couldn’t do this anymore but until then, she wasn’t going to think about it. She was only nineteen; officially, she had plenty of time to think about the depressing topic of the future.
Being moved back to the dance floor had Rhiannon forgetting everything other than the dance floor and the music pulsing through her. She forgot about her friends, being held up by the bar and tossing back insults as easily as they were tossing back shots. The night seemed to just fly by and before Rhi even realised it, the lights were slowing being turned back on and the staff were yelling about closing up and sending them on their way. “Think they went back already?” She asked, after not seeing Allela and Ryder anywhere. If they weren’t on their way back to the hotel room, they’d find themselves there eventually. “Shall we?” She asked, pushing the door to the club open and turning towards their hotel. She wasn’t on the same level as the other two but she wasn’t feeling any pain either and that, she considered, a good night out. The next night would be better. Back in the suite, Rhi said goodnight to Grayson and slipped into her room, pulling off the wig as she went to let her hair fall free again. She was too tired from a good night to do much of anything, she was lucky to get her wig off, her glasses off and the shorts she'd been wearing tossed to the corner. Slipping on the sleep shorts she'd packed was a victory in itself! She barely managed to get under the duvet. Sleep took her the second her head hit the pillow.

It was with a loud laugh that Allela fell into Ryder. She pinched his cheek, grinning all the while as she tried to focus on her best friend, but her eyes were not exactly working right now. “Of course I love you the best. But shhh! Don't tell the others or they might get jealous.” She pressed her finger to pursed lips and tried to suppress her giggles, failing miserably. Of course she and Ryder were close, they were in each other's lives more than they weren't. It was one of the side effects to being in a band together, working together and now attending the same university campus together. She felt close to him and if anything were to ever happen in her life she already knew that Ryder would be the first person she ran to, even if it was the middle of the night and they were both sober as opposed to the drunken mess that they had fallen into already tonight.
By now everything that they said was pulling laughter from Allela, regardless of whether it was funny or not. She was in that kind of mood tonight and a little overjoyed to have her best friend at her side again. It really was good to see Ryder coming out of his slump and it cheered her up immensely, even though she didn't realise that she had been so lost without him there to tease and torment all the time. “Are you proposing to me again, Ryder?” She teased, trying to shoot Ryder her best coy look. They had often joked about their affection in the past and fake marriage proposals or comments about such weren't exactly uncommon for the two friends. It was like a silly little game they played and something they never took seriously, but Allela kept laughing when they always fell back into the story that they were “destined to be together.” She had lost count of the amount of public spectacles they had caused with such antics.
Allela had no idea where she was going when they got outside. Her mind was intending to lead them back to the hotel to grab a pen and paper at the front desk and then carry on pulling Ryder to wherever, but her sense of direction was inhibited by the fact that they were in a totally strange place and she was wasted. When she should have taken a left she took a right and they found themselves on a street of brightly lit shops and bistros that were open late into the night for the tourists. Stopping dead she looked around and then up at Ryder who was still swimming in and out of focus. “I think I took us the wrong way...” She confessed, pushing hair out of her eyes. “One of these places has to have pen and paper though.” Grabbing his hand again she tugged him into the closest store which happened to be a jewellery store. The clerks looked like they were getting ready to close up, but they still turned with smiles on their faces when they heard the door open. Trying to walk in a straight line, Allela moved to the first counter and flashed the girl there an uncharacteristically easy smile. “We need a pen and paper. D'you have one? It's for our lifelong promise to each other.” She passed the words out slowly, trying to slur as little as possible.

Ryder swayed with the extra weight on him with Allela falling into his side, but it didn’t take him more than a second to right himself and tighten his hold on her so she wouldn’t meet the floor. “I won’t tell. I promise.” Ryder whispered, nodding his head as if that would cement the promise he’d made. In another five minutes, he probably wouldn’t remember what he was promising anyway, so it was probably a moot point. Ryder hadn’t realised how much he missed hanging out with Allela outside of work. They were in each other’s lives so much that missing out on those weekend breaks was a terrible idea. There had been no reason for Ryder to skip out on his life the way he had. Yes, he had homework, but he always had homework and he excelled at what he did so he hadn’t actually needed to stay in and catch up. “Always. When are you going to stop turning me down?” He said as seriously as he could manage without bursting out in laughter. It didn’t work as well as he had wanted and started laughing nearly as soon as the words left his mouth. They had jokes for as long as he could remember that they were made for each other and destined to be together forever.
The architect to be had absolutely no idea where they were going or if they were even going in the right direction. He was all upside down in a city he’d never visited before. But that wouldn’t stop him. He was with his best friend and that could only mean they were bound to have an adventure. And honestly, he couldn’t even remember what they were doing anyway. The cool hair hit his face and all he thought was that he was happy he’d chosen a costume with a sweater. He was following Allela blindly and walked right into her when she stopped dead in her tracks. “Pen and paper! That’s what we were looking for!” Ryder said, eyes wide because he remembered what they were searching for. Ryder followed Allela into the first store and looked around while she demanded pen and paper. A ring caught his attention and he remembered what the pair of them was talking about in the club. So while Allela was preoccupied with her search, Ryder caught the attention of another employee and asked to see the ring in hushed tones, all while trying to appear far sober than he actually was. He asked about the size and every other detail he needed and asked if there was a matching ring. It was a little far for a joke but he was amused by it and wanted to see what Allela would say. Fate must have been on his side because the rings were their size and he bought them right then and there, handing over his credit card and signing the slip of receipt. The rings weren’t overly expensive, easily covered by some of the funds in his savings account; which was easily transferred over to pay the credit card bill when it came in. Rings in his pocket, Ryder took the pen and paper and Allela’s hand, thanking the employees of the store as they walked back out again. Outside, Ryder pulled Allela to the side and got down on one knee. "So, what do you say, Ally-Cat?" He asked, taking the ring from his pocket to show her.

Sometimes she wondered just how many people they had convinced with their dramatic displays of affection. They had definitely pulled in some looks and a few had stopped to watch, trying to be subtle and failing miserably. It had always been such fun and sort of an inside joke for her and Ryder, so she never thought twice about what they were saying even when they were stone cold sober. Which is why she laughed so hard when Ryder spoke up again now. “When you get me a ring! Didn't you hear Austin?” She said, acting as though it was the most obvious answer and one Ryder should have clued into sooner. In the store the women asked about Ryder. She told them that he was her best friend and in her drunken haze she didn't stop to think how it might appear to strangers. They had come into a jewellers together, spoke of lifelong promises and now she was calling him her best friend. They were the making of wedding vows if anyone every heard them, but Allela wasn't thinking straight. Saying their goodbyes and leaving the store, Allela was about to sit her ass on the curb so she could write whatever it was she was supposed to write. However that didn't matter since Ryder pulled her off to the side again, almost sending her crashing into a wall with her sense of balance already wrecked. Confused at first, Allela laughed when she realised what he was doing, but she played along anyway; just like she always did. “I just hope your ma likes me! Yeah, go on then, Ryder. Yes!” She played her part, offering him her hand, not for one moment able to think that a ring took their joke to a whole new level.
After that the night seemed to blur and that joke was centre stage for it all. At first they did their usual dramatic jokes about the families and their future, but when someone overheard them and offered their congratulations, things changed. The man pointed them towards a chapel themed for Halloween, joking that while they had the costumes it was as good a time as any. He told another story after that, but Allela wasn't listening and soon he was offering to be witness as they reached what looked and sounded like a Haunted House but was in fact one of Atlantic City's chapels. There should have been alarm bells telling her that this wasn't a joke any more and that none of this was funny. Instead, all Allela had was one long giggle that lasted right through until they stumbled back to the hotel suite, ink smudged on her hand from where she had signed her name next to Ryder's...- - - It was the sunlight that woke Allela up. Cracking her eyes open she felt like the crushed victim of an eighteen-wheeler. There was no way she was climbing out of bed. She was moving her arm, dropping it across her face to block out the light when something scratched her skin. Forcing her eyes open this time, she looked at it, moving down from her elbow to her fingers. It was there she saw it and bolted upright. A bad move since her stomach churned and her head rocked back and forth like someone was scrambling her brain around in there. Her eyes were seeing straight though and the ring on her ring finger was no illusion. She glanced to the right of her and saw Ryder sprawled in the sheets. Allela could remember absolutely nothing from the night before but her heart was pounding and there was a sense of panic rising; especially when she caught sight of his left hand on the pillow by his head. “Ryder. Ryder, you've got to wake the hell up right now.”She shook him aggressively and then smacked him hard with the pillow her head had been on. “Ryder, what the fuck did we do last night?!”She asked him, her voice rising.

Pointing, Ryder swayed against the bar, barely keeping his balance. “Right, I’ll have to do that then.” He said, slurring only the tiniest bit, a feat worthy of victory itself; especially since he was having trouble with everything else that night. The joke was a long running one, and Ryder laughed as they played along no matter what state they were in. It had never mattered if they were drunk, three sheets to the wind and no hope to see sunlight before noon or if they were sober. And the women in the little shop didn’t help them along with the joke either. Of course, the fact that they went into the jewelry store did help in the least. They had fate working with those women, having the perfect rings in their sizes already in the store and easily purchased. Outside, Ryder’s heart actually started thumping harder in his chest. He should have realised this was taking their joke too far, crossing a line they only joked about. But it seemed like too good to pass up. So he didn’t. Slipping the ring on Allela’s finger, Ryder lifted her up and spun her around laughing happily and continuing to joke about it. From there it was a bit of a blurry haze. A man stopped, a haunted house came into view and twenty or so minutes later, he was signing his name next to Allela’s on a piece of paper Ryder stuffed into the back pocket of his jeans.
*** Drunken dreams were always the weirdest ones and after the previous night, Ryder’s were sure to be insane. If he ever repeated then, someone might institutionalise him! He was straddling the line of sleep and being awake. His head was pounding and he couldn’t even lift his hand, the movement sent his stomach into motion. He should have slept in the bathroom, or at least found a bucket somewhere because his stomach felt like it was going to reintroduce him to all he’d ingested the night before. Allela shaking him only had him muttering about being sick and to leave him alone; not even registering it was Allela yelling at him and not the one he was supposed to be sharing the room with. And he was too hung over to even wonder where Grayson was. He shot upright, hand first when the pillow connected with his face, his eyes barely opened to slits. The light was a killer and he couldn’t handle it with his head. Allela cursing at him didn’t help either; especially since he didn’t have a god damned clue what she was talking about. “Drink the night away? Celebrate Rhi’s birthday? Jesus, I don’t know. I want to sleep.” He said, flopping back down onto his pillow, throwing his hand across his face and finally feeling the cold ring of gold on his finger hit his eyebrow. His blue eyes opened again and spotted the white gold of a wedding band on his ring finger. “Uh… Ally-Cat, what is that?” He asked, sitting up again and looking over at Allela. A quick glance at her hand told him, it wasn’t just a ghost of his oddball dream.

She couldn't believe any of this was happening. A minute ago her biggest concern was keeping her stomach settled, but now her stomach was the least of her worries. Her heart was pounding, her breathing was slightly quicker than it ought to be and Ryder being in a rough state was not helping matters. She wanted to go back to sleep and wake up again to find this was all some terrible nightmare concocted by her hungover brain in an attempt to make her never drink again. However there was no way Allela could sleep now. Her left hand actually felt weighted down by the ring and seeing Ryder donning a terrifyingly similar band did nothing to calm her nerves right now. “I wish I knew.” She whispered, looking at her best friend and shaking her head. She felt sick to her stomach and she wasn't sure if that was thanks to the alcohol or the realisation of what might have happened between them. Allela was just thankful she was still in her Lightning costume or else these circumstances and her lack of memories might have triggered a full blown panic attack and meltdown.
Trying to pull herself together, she reached for her cell phone which was on the floor by the bed. Clearly she had missed the table before she had passed out in Ryder's bed. Which also posed another question of why she had ended up in Ryder's bed and where the hell was Grayson? The empty bed looked slept in but there was no sign of the man and it was too early for her to believe he had woken up already. Pushing her hair back from her face she checked her text messages first, but there was nothing. Voicemails and phone calls were untouched too. As a last resort she looked through her camera, finding a few snaps from the night before. There was one of Ryder with some bartender, her with the same bartender, both of them with the bartender...then it went to pocket shots for two and then the final shot she found had an uncharacteristic whimper passing her lips. Unable to look at Ryder, she tossed him the phone and dropped her head into her hands. The last shot she had from last night was of the pair of them smooshed together in the screen, clearly as drunk as can be, and very obviously showing off their matching rings to the camera.
Why couldn't she remember anything at all?! There were nights in her past with blank spots and missing pieces but never had there been anything like this. The more she tried to think the more her distress piled up. “Ry, please tell me we didn't. We didn't get...married, right?” She begged him, barely unable to even utter the word. She wanted to stand up, to walk, but the thought had her stomach kicking off again, warning her that it wasn't ready or settled enough for her to start moving yet. She was safest sitting on the bed where the room could spin slowly, but she could remain still. “This cannae be happening.” She muttered, pushing her tangled hair back from her face. So much was missing from last night and it was scaring her. Allela wasn't sure if her hands were shaking from the hangover or with fear now.
