Since most of the brothers were living their lives away from home these days, Dominic valued the times they were all together again. He knew that no matter where life took them they would always be back together for the holidays, and their dad’s birthday, which was what this last visit had been for. The old man had turned fifty-four and his sons had come together to throw a party of sports, friends and a barbecue that almost destroyed a fence panel when Paul got too caught up in a wrestling match with Rocco to keep his eye on it. It was always something as silly and as chaotic with each trip home and Dominic wouldn’t have his family any other way. They were pretty full on to the people who didn’t know the Mirallas brood, but it was all meant in good fun. Only one memory came to Dom as an example of a bad fight and it was the day his mother had walked out. Very little time was spent thinking about that woman now, for any of the boys, and they had lived great lives and were chasing their respective dreams and giving their dad something to boast about with each passing week.
Dominic wished he could’ve stayed in Briarcliff for just a few more days, but even though it was summer, he still had things to tend to in the city. Like his job. He already swapped shifts and used vacation days to make sure he had the necessary match days and hours free. The summer was his chance to earn some extra money with longer hours and make sure that he had those emergency funds stashed away, should he ever need them. He was on a basketball scholarship at the university, which relieved the burden a bit, but Dom still needed to buy the necessary textbooks and find the money to live off. His job at the campus Sub Station did what it needed to and he made the payments for his apartment on time each month, but Dominic was far from living a comfortable life of luxury. That alone was the sole reason for him heading back to the city now, ready for the late shift at Sub Station. It was surprising just how many drunk students craved a sandwich in the middle of the night, but it kept Dom busy and gave him extra shifts when he needed them
The city seemed as busy as ever and he had to navigate the crowds as well as his iPod as he chose a rather inconvenient time to change the playlist he had been listening to. Still, he was pretty quick when he needed to be and sidestepping and dodging was something that was almost second nature to Dominic by now, thanks to the years of playing basketball competitively. The commuters and the people rushing to get home didn’t bother him at all and he was practically absorbed by the music blasting through his ears at a volume he would probably be told he would one day regret. For the time being, Dominic was young and had a promising future ahead of him, so the regrets and the lectures could come once he had worn all of that away and hopefully that would be at the end of an athletic career. It wasn't all that long before his feet hit the concrete of the college campus and with a little bit of time to kill before his shift began, he chose to go and pick up his favourite from the colleague he would be replacing soon enough. There were two people ahead of him in the queue, but that wasn't a problem for Dominic. At least it wasn't until he saw the slim phone slip from a pocket or bag and quietly hit the floor, almost sliding out of sight under the counter. Easily, Dom stooped down and swooped it up before turning to jog slowly after the customer now leaving the store. “Hey! Excuse me, I think you dropped this.” He said with an easy smile, knowing it was an easy mistake to make as he caught the attention of the person who owned the phone.

@dominic)
Katrina had been waiting patiently at the store awhile to get what she came for. Her mind on other things. He gve a small smile of thanks to the cashier and grabbed her paid items before heading out. She grabbed her phone to check the time and absently putting back inher pocket. Not realizing that sh had missed and the phone hasn't made it to the pocket at all!
She would have been without a phone if it wasnt for someone calling and another person walked by her. Startled from her thoughts she stared at the person in shock a moment. Her blue eyes wide like a deer caught in a headlights of a car before relaxing from her brief fright. Not having liked being surprised unexpectedly. Sh grabbed the phone from the young man's hand an gave him a smile. "Thanks! I guess I don't even know I dropped it." She chuckled tucking her phone into her pokey successfully.

Dominic was a New York native, but to the state and not the city. Briarcliff was only a short train ride away from the hectic city that never sleeps, but it was a total change of pace. It was a silent town, sleepy in every single way. Everyone was content to live their lives at a steady pace, humble and modest to almost a fault and no one wanted for anything more than they already had. Of course, there were exceptions to that description, just like there were everywhere else, but Dominic felt much more at home there than he did in the big city with her bright lights and non-stop pace. He didn't even know if he liked NYC, but it held the best prospects for him and had offered him a scholarship he couldn't in his right mind refuse. It paid his way through college, made the burden easier and freed him from the financial stress of student loans. He had so many friends already weighed down under the weight of such things and they hadn't even reached the point where payment plans were to be considered. All Dominic had to work the long hours for was to keep a roof over his head and his cheap apartment was already enough of a bother for him when it came to maintenance and bills. Affordable though it was, living alone in a city such as this one was not as easy as the movies made it look.
Sub Station, therefore, wasn't just a handy place to grab lunch in between classes or after basketball practice. It was what kept that roof over his head. Working the late shift also put a few more pennies in his pocket, so to speak, and Dominic happily burned the midnight oil for that reason. Plus, when it was quiet he could read over a textbook, or make some notes from whatever he had managed to scribble down from a lecture earlier in the day. He knew his other colleague, Hayden, hated working in the store once the sun had gone down and he was one of the few who had known her long enough to know her reasons. For the party guy, joker, that he was known to be, Dom had a heart somewhere, and he did her a favour by taking those midnight shifts before they could be offered to her. Their newest supervisor was clueless and didn't seem to care about their preferences, so Dom played the knight in shining armour without any words needing to be spoken between the colleagues.
“The pains of the busy.” Dom said with a small smirk as the girl took her phone back from him. The lost property box in the Sub Station office was full of phones, wallets and other random items that were often unclaimed. There was very little they could actually do with them in the long run, so they sat in the cardboard box by the manager's desk, gathering dusk and slowly becoming forgotten. He assumed their owners bought new, shiner things and soon never gave their old belongings a second thought.

"I know right!" She grinned at him. "Anyways I apologize for making you have to yeah now..." She rolled her eyes playfully. She pulled her coat closer into her and looked around awkwardly. What else could she say? "Will you at least let me get you a cup of coffee a thanks?" She asked. "I don't want to sound like a vain or whatever but my phone is important to me. Has all my songs and schedules on it. I don't know what I'd do without it." She said.

It was late in the day. Dominic had been caught in the late weekend rush of everyone racing through Grand Central when he had arrived back in the heart of the city. Tourists and visitors were rushing for the trains that would take them back to their daily lives, whilst those who had escaped New York for a short break, much like himself in a way, were fighting for the yellow cabs outside. Thankfully, being the active and athletic guy that he was, Dominic had opted to just walk from the station to the college campus where he worked. It was just a hell of a lot easier for him, and much more enjoyable than being stuck in the monotonous New York traffic, especially after being on a somewhat crowded commute from Briarcliff back into the city itself.
He already knew he was in for a long shift tonight. It might have been a Sunday evening, but for students that meant very little. There would still be those who went out to the nightclubs and the bars, who would stagger home in the early hours and need food. There would be those studying through the night ready for the exam period in a few weeks, only disturbed when their stomachs growled to remind them of the meals they had skipped out on to cram in another few hours in the library. There was always someone, somewhere on the campus who felt like food was a good option at some ridiculous hour of the night. That was what the company paid him and his co-worker to be there for, and the clock was ticking down until Dominic had to swipe in and be behind the counter. “Ah, don't mention it. It's fine.”
Dominic glanced at the time on his phone and pulled a face. “If I have a coffee now I'll be up all night.” He chuckled. It wouldn't bode well coming off the late shift to be awake for the rest of the night when he had a day of classes and basketball practice. It was the sport that paid his way through these four years and Dominic hated it when the coach shouted at him and made it seem as though he was taking the whole experience for granted. Of course, like everyone, he had off days and injuries, but Dominic loathed them. “Plus, I have to clock in soon or else my co-worker will kill me with some salami.” He joked, gesturing back to the counter inside. There wasn't long before it was time for the staff rotation and while he knew Hayden wouldn't be pissed at five minutes, he knew she would want to be home as quickly as possible, and he'd feel awful for making her late after everything.

She grimaced lightly and nodded. "Ah, I understand. I'm sorry if I'm keeping you or anything." She replied giving an apologetic smile to the young man.
Katrina glanced around the area awkwardly a moment unsure of what to say afterwards. "So um...yeah I should probably get going then. Don't want to keep you late from work and all." She said before taking a few steps away from him. "Perhaps we'll meet again." She chuckled. Who knew? The world was big but it was only so big.

Work did have a nasty habit of getting in the way of everything. Without it though, Dominic wouldn't have a roof over his head, or any way to pay for the train journeys back home every couple of weeks. The thought of driving it in his beat up old car just wasn't worth it. New York traffic, combined with the disgruntled noises of his second hand Corolla did not make for a pleasant journey, and the gridlocked traffic made it longer than it ever ought to be for a trip to a place that wasn't so far from the bright lights of New York City herself. Work was a hassle, but it was a necessary hassle. For that reason alone, Dominic had no choice but to grin and bear it, even when he would rather be doing a million other things. “No, no. It's nothing like that. She just has to be out by half past.” He shrugged, playing it off as he checked the clock once more, ensuring that he wasn't cutting it too close to make Hayden panic. It was the last thing he wanted for his poor blonde colleague. “At least you've got your phone back.” He said with a smile, changing the topic before he rambled on too much about the time or the problem of it. After all, the phone had been the whole reason he had chased after her in the first place.
It was always a bit difficult and awkward when one person had some place to be. Society hadn't found a way to make that any easier yet, and Dominic doubted that they'd figure it out any time soon since everyone was glued to cellphones and tablets these days. Not that Dominic worried too much about that sort of thing since he was dedicated to his basketball more than anything else. If he wasn't practising the sport then he was looking for the next big party, like most of the other students he knew. “Maybe. You do know where I work after all!” He joked, pointing to the big luminescent sign that hung above him. Nothing in the city was subtle, nothing knew how to be. “And I've been told I make a mean sub.” He added, a light and playful invitation for her to call back sometime, maybe when he was working one of his many shifts. He didn't want their conversation to be cut short, and he hated running off on people, but Hayden would need him to punch in sooner rather than later.

She nodded laughing softly. "Yeah perhaps we will see each other." She mused tilting her head to the side with a thoughtful smile. She perked up a little at the mention of his job. "Yeah I guess I do. Perhaps I'll stop by sometime for lunch." She replied.
Katrina looked behind him at the street and shops. "I'm Katrina by the way. Katrina Devereux." She held her hand out towards him for a handshake. "Might as well know each others name huh? If we are going to see each other again." She chuckled.

For such a big planet, it could be a small world. Dominic always bumped into people he’d never thought he’d see again. That was why he doubted this was the last he’d ever see of this girl, even if this had been their first meeting. Fate had a funny way of ensuring paths crossed again for some reason or another. He didn’t claim to know why and he had no intention of thinking much about it either. He wasn’t a smart guy and his studies in the classroom were already enough to boggle his mind. He didn’t need anything else to give him a headache. “Just not a Wednesday. I have basketball practice at lunchtime on Wednesdays.” He said with a grin, as though they were actually making serious plans. He was just joking around, although he was telling the truth. Wednesday afternoons were torturous for him, but also the whole reason he was at NYU in the first place.
“It makes sense.” He agreed with a one shouldered shrug. “Dominic Mirallas.” He reached out and shook her hand quickly, straightening up to hear the awkward crack of his back. The woes of being over six foot tall. “Well, Katrina Devereux, don’t be a stranger for long.” He said with a cheeky smile and a playful wink, dropping her hand and letting his own fall back to his side. Too many people did, but then that was just another con of life. To a social butterfly like Dominic though, it was an annoyance and he liked making friends everywhere he went. He never stopped to think or wonder if it irked others out there.

She grinned at him. "Well it's very nice to meet you Dominic!" She replied and laughed at his little comment. "I can't truly be a stranger in my own homeland now can I?" She returned the playful wink and her own teasing smirk.
"So you play sports then? I'm athletic myself. I'm actually a dancer and a dance instructor." She added. "I got dance like every other day every week sometimes more depending on how my schedules end up." She rolled her eyes playfully. "Maybe you can come watch me practice sometime ne?" She offered before pulling out a notebook and pen and jotted down her number and address of her work studio. "It's be great to see you sometime!" She held out the paper. "My phone number and work address if you ever choose to come see me."

“I think that’s something for the debate society to discuss.” He said, pulling a face. The only debates he ever held were usually heated ones over whatever game happened to be on at the bar or at home when he returned to Briarcliff. It wasn’t a typical night in the Mirallas household without the men screaming at the television and at each other about the referee’s decision, dirty tackles, fouls and other disagreements that usually dated back to fights that had started in the late nineties. That was the perks of living in sports-centric household though, and Dominic wouldn’t change a single part of that. He might have played basketball, but his love for sports ran much deeper than that. Sit him with his brothers and it was practically all they could talk about unless one of them had been on a date recently; then they wanted the details of that, too. Boys would be boys, after all.
Nodding his head, Dominic ran his fingers through his hair, making sure it was styled in place. “All my life.” He hadn’t been an academic kid. For a long time, he had struggled at school to understand a lot of the subjects that were being taught, but sports, basketball in particular, had been his salvation. It was his release and his freedom. He was good at it, and no one could take that from him. It had been enough to get him in to NYU on a scholarship, and he hoped it would be enough to see him playing professionally in another few years. That was his dream. Dominic took the bit of paper from her and glanced over the address. It looked familiar, but he had lived in New York City long enough to know his way around most of it by now. “I’ll see if I can squeeze it in some time.” He grinned. Dominic’s life was hectic, busy from dawn to dusk most days when college was in session, but he usually found time to take a break and do something for himself when he really wanted to.

She hummed nodding thoughtfully. "Hey, if you love something then you shouldn't care what else people will say about it." She shrugged."society can just shut up." She grumbled thinking bak to her own time when people looked down at her for her love of dance. People nowadays weren't as athletic and lover of sports asides from an occasional baseball team. It was rare for Kat to see people so engrossed in their love of sports and when she did see them she was happy.
"Good. I'll be looking for you then." She smiled. "How long have you been playing basketball?" She asked tilting her head curiously. "It's good to see that your dedicated to something you love to do."

It was easy to say that the opinions of others shouldn’t matter, but it wasn’t always the case in life. Plus, with everything Dominic did he often needed the opinions of others to gauge if he was actually doing well. He knew when to toss some to the gutter, since he hadn’t been raised to walk all over. Besides, most people only commented to Dominic about a basketball game or the sandwich from the shop. It wasn’t like he was the guy they turned to when they wanted to discuss politics or world news. He was the sports guy, the joker who could usually make a room laugh with some silly prank or comment at a foolish friend’s expense.
“Ever since I was a kid, really.” He told her with a shrug. “I don’t remember there being a time when I didn’t play basketball.” Sports had been in his life for as long as memory served, and basketball was there just as long as that. Dominic couldn’t imagine what his life would be like without it; the game was such an integral part of who he was. It was what defined him to most people, had been almost all of his life. He was young, still had plenty of years left in him, but Dominic only ever thought of basketball for his future. As far as he was concerned there was no alternative for him.

She smiled slightly. "Well that's good to hear." She nodded to herself. "I've been dancing for several years. I actually grew up on the streets for a few years but when I was old enough I got a job and started dancing." She shrugged with a small smile.
Katrina didn't normally talk about her past due to it being dark and dangerous; tended to trigger her OTHER side. But occasionally it would come up in conversations and she would keep it light and hope they wouldn't ask too much about it. She much preferred talking about the other person. Takes the spotlight off of her; and only then.
"Do you live around here Dominic? She asked curiously. "I live with a flatmate at his place due to being kicked out of my apartment." She pouted and shook her head with a small smile.

Dominic wasn’t the type of guy who was going to change the world. His brother might, since he was taking the steps to launch himself into a political career, working his way up from the intern post he had fought hard to achieve the year before. Nothing like that was waiting for Dominic on the other side of college though. His fingers were crossed for a professional basketball career, because if he didn’t land that then there was a very strong chance he’d be forcing high school kinds through the gym classes their even loved or loathed. While he wouldn’t mind that future someday, he wanted it to be in the distant future when a long illustrious career had worn him out or grated his knees to something that meant he wouldn’t play pro anymore. He didn’t want to don the cap and gown only to fall back into a hallway of students.
“Sounds tough.” Dominic commented, listening rather than butting in. Plus, he didn’t know what else he could say to her tale without turning it more awkward; something he didn’t want. His own upbringing had been flawed, but he would never say it was bad. There was a roof over his head, albeit small and crowded most of the time, no mother on the scene since the day she decided to leave the family home for reasons unknown, but plenty of love between father and sons. He couldn’t really complain, and no one would ever catch him doing so. They might not have had the fancy life or the luxuries of other kids who flaunted new phones every years and drove flashy cars, but Dominic never lacked in knowing that he mattered, even when his grades were in the dumps because he didn’t academically succeed.
“I live a few blocks walk from here.” His apartment building was mainly comprised of students or others who hadn’t quite found their way yet. The rent was affordable, the space on the smaller side. Dominic didn’t have too many things to clutter the place up with, so it all fitted in well for him. Besides, after living in the student dorms for the first two years of his college experience, he was thankful of having the free space to himself without needing to worry about a roommate complaining about a mess, causing a mess or generally being a bother. Both of his dorm buddies had been decent enough, but he had heard horror stories from the rest of his building back then and had never wanted to experience it first-hand. “At least you found someplace to stay.” He offered, though again he was feeling slightly awkward. Not many people in New York City were so open with their problems and Dominic wasn’t exactly the guy people shared their issues with usually.
