PERSONALITY: A charming gentleman, Alfie is a well-mannered man. He’s intelligent and oozes with confidence. At the same time, he can be a somewhat stressed man who feels the pressure a little more than he probably should. For that reason he’s athletic in the sense that he’s a marathon runner, training through the year. Quiet, but friendly, Alfie is an approachable guy who can get along with just about anyone. Although this is a rather large part of his personality, he knows he also comes across as something of a loner at times, since he does enjoy his space and time to himself to think. He’s eloquent and likes to think of himself as cultured, although he’ll admit that there is always room for improvement there. A leader, Alfie is naturally capable of being in charge or standing on his own two feet. He’s hard working and the type of guy who can be trusted with great responsibility. However, it should also be known that he has a side to his personality that is also slightly childish and something that most people find out of sorts for him. He’ll enjoy sitting in a paddling pool on his balcony in the summer, saying it’s better than a hot tub any day. That sort of strange personality. At times he is capable of losing his cool, and when he does he can be terrifying to behold. Alfie doesn’t allow it to happen publicly very often, but there are times when he simply can’t help it. He’s protective and if there is ever a time when he can’t protect those he cares about, then he’ll blame himself. Strong, Alfie will carry great weight on his shoulders and not all of it will be his own stress, but that of other’s, too. He’ll overburden himself easily, which can lead to that temper of his rearing its ugly head, but so long as there is someone to support him, he’ll be fine in the end. Romantically, Alfie is looking for Mrs Right. Not in a desperate manner, but he’s aware that he’s closer to thirty than twenty-five and he’s family conscious. He does want to settle down in the years to come and dating around is the only way to find the right woman for him. He’s sweet and never crosses a line (at least not intentionally), but feelings are still an area in his life where he can be easily confused or misguided. He doesn’t like being hurt or hurting others.MOTHER: Jane Elizabeth Beckett, 60.

HISTORY: Jane met Walter when she was finishing up her university education. Walter worked in the administration building. She went on to continue post graduate studies to get her PhD in English Literature. They married when she finished her work and soon started a family. Alfie was their firstborn; a healthy baby boy who was lively and everything they could hope for. When he was almost ready to start school, they had a daughter, Amelia. Their family was complete, perfect even. Jane worked as a professor of English Literature in the university she graduated from, whilst Walter continued to work in administration there.
They wanted the best for their children, pushed them to be the greatest that they could be. They encouraged them in every way possible and gave them the best that they could offer. When Alfie was old enough he attended private school, later a boarding school. Amelia followed suit when she was the same age. Jane was offered a prestigious job in America as a professor of English Literature at Stanford University when Alfie was twelve. The family discussed matters and while they decided that it was best for her to accept the position they didn’t want to uproot the children at that time. Because of this, Amelia and Alfie remained in the English boarding school to finish their education. They flew out to California when the school terms were over, vacationed with their parents every summer and winter. Despite the distance between parents and children, there was still the love there, along with the pressure on them to be the best that they could be. If Alfie or Amelia obtained a lower grade in school, they had to be able to explain why and then they had best improve it before the end of the next term or else there would be consequences. It was done with love and affection, but there was no room for laziness, slacking off or rebellion.
When Alfie finished high school, he chose to attend university in America. To him it made the most sense since it was where his parents were and where Amelia planned on moving when she finished her own time at the boarding school. He had known since he was thirteen that he wanted to have a law career. After gaining acceptance to Yale, Alfie began preparing himself for law school, taking the classes that would benefit him the most and once again feeling the pressure from his parents to excel here. This time, he wanted to do well for himself and not just them. He took on what he could in terms of extra-curricular activities that would look appealing on a resume when it came to applying to law school. He had his heart set on Yale, and not just because it was the school he was already attending. After graduating at the top of his class, he moved on to Yale law school and began the hard work to make his dreams a reality.
Alfie lived and breathed for law. His textbooks often doubled as pillows when he was pulling all night study sessions and he gave up weekends to focus on going the extra mile on assignments and essays. He wanted to stand out from the rest of his class, to make sure that he wasn’t going to be lost somewhere in the middle of his class when graduation day rolled around and they all went their separate ways in their field. It paid off. In the end Alfie graduated at the top of his class, with the opportunity to join be a Federal Law Clerk in New York.
Amelia moved to the city for her own college education, but she attended Columbus to study medicine. After her graduation she worked for a year in the local hospital before choosing to move to Africa as an aid worker. When she left, and despite Alfie’s dislike of cats, she ditched her kitten Onyx on him. He thought about giving the cat to a friend, but he was far too close to his sister to ever do something like that, which is how he wound up with a pet who liked him about as much as he liked it. Thankfully, his pet dog Dante keeps him just about sane and the two animals annoy each other enough when Alfie is working these days.
The job is demanding, but Alfie would change nothing. It’s everything he ever wanted and while the position was only ever considered as a temporary placement, he’s talking with his judge about making it a career position now that their rapport and respect is something that seems to be working out for the two of them. Alfie is looking to start settling down with his life, since New York can be a lonely place for a guy who is working almost non-stop in a career full of cynics and criminals. He wants to find his own happy ending before he’s too old to remember what those are.
