SECRETS: He found out that the man who raised him isn’t actually his biological father, but it seems that his mother has kept this from everyone but Emmett, and she only told him when his biological father was dying and needed Emmett’s help!
PERSONALITY: Emmett, at first glance, is pretty goofy. He’s the kind to make obscure references and dated jokes to break the ice, even if they don’t work most of the time. He’s compassionate though he isn’t usually the first person people come to with their problems because he’s usually a little too quick to try and solve them. He doesn’t like to let things fester and would much rather confront them there and then, which isn’t always the best approach or everyone else’s favourite method of problem solving. He’s very playful and is the first to fill a quiet day with some silly adventure or game. He’s intelligent, though he’s not the kind to show off about it or bring his achievements up in conversation. He’s confident but surprisingly awkward when questions are asked, usually making some odd little analogy to answer with. He’s actually a bit of a flirt but can sometimes get a little ahead of himself, especially if he’s had a drink or seven! When he’s in a bad mood he goes quiet and doesn’t really like sharing his problems with others, despite being keen to help them with theirs. He’s caring about those close to him and won’t judge them, regardless of what they’ve done. He’s friendly and the kind of guy who will strike up a conversation on the subway with a total stranger. Emmett prefers to be social than hide away in his apartment with his college work, but he does enjoy the odd evening to himself when he can indulge in the quirky likes of his and just watch documentaries or play his saxophone. He’s a bit of a softie usually easily swayed around to ideas and sometimes finds it hard to say ‘no’ to someone. He tries to be truthful but when he does lie, it ends up spiralling out of control and usually costs him a friend along the way. He’s not a fighter and if there is any altercation of any kind he is probably likely to try and run from it, but the man does have a bit of a temper. He doesn't like being betrayed and if he feels it, then he's prone to yelling and storming about until it's all out of his system. When he's angry he doesn't like talking about it to anyone not involved in making him feel that way; he'd rather deal with it in his mind. He can be quite secretive and very quickly will change the subject if he thinks it’s hitting a little too close to home for him. Quite hypocritical though, since he’s very curious and will often ask questions without thinking about how the other person might react, or he’ll stick his nose in where it doesn’t belong, sometimes landing him in the sort of trouble he likes to run away from. He’s determined and a dreamer; if he says he’s going to do something then he probably will do whatever it takes to achieve it! Sometimes it’s a good trait, but other times it can be a waste of his time.

HISTORY: Emmett came into the world as a screaming bundle of joy to Neil and Lucy Winchester during a cold winter in Salem. Everything seemed perfect but from long before Emmett was born, Lucy was harbouring a dark secret; her son’s father wasn’t Neil, but his best friend; Carter. She told no one, but Carter had his suspicions since the affair with his best friend’s wife had started over a year before Emmett was born and only came to an abrupt end on the day the doctor told Lucy that she was three months pregnant. She knew the truth, lied to Neil about the dates and made it work for many, many years. She longed for the happy ending and the white picket fence that Neil could give her, but found her husband to be a workaholic, which had been what had pushed her into the arms of Carter Marlowe to start with.
A few short years later, Emmett was given a playmate in the form of his baby sister Tiffany. The family life seemed perfect, despite the tension that still existed between Lucy and Carter thanks to their history together and Carter’s suspicions about Emmett’s parentage. The little boy did bear some resemblance to the man who had screwed over his best friend, but not enough for Neil to question it or even notice it. Emmett knew Carter as his “uncle” and often went on days out with the man and Tiffany when he was growing up.
Emmett was intelligent, very much so and did well in school from day one. If anything got him in trouble it was saying the wrong thing or asking too many questions during class; really it wasn’t misbehaving, but rather his curious personality and need to know more about everyone and everything that had the teachers scolding him or the other boys daring him to a fight in the school yard. There wasn’t a violent bone in his body though and it often left him getting a nice punch before managing to run away. He had a close set of friends, but a lot of the kids saw him as the little weird boy, the class geek and the coward. Emmett didn’t really mind though, he took it as it came and just strived to rise above it, refusing to let the bullies get him down at any point in his life. From a young age he loved history, but more specifically the things that could be found to reveal the secrets of the past, like the tombs in Egypt.
As he got older and the teenage years cursed him with acne, braces and that awkward phase everyone goes through, Emmett did start looking a little more like his biological father, but Lucy laughed it off and blamed the amount of time they spent together for Emmett picking up “quirks” as she put it. Neil took it, laughing too and jokingly telling Carter off for stealing his son. Neil was always proud of Emmett, especially when he made all the best grades in his school, worked hard in his part time job and managed to win prizes in little competitions held in the city. Emmett kept his friends close, had a date for prom, kept on the right path (aside from his mouth slipping him up a lot and getting him another few punches and beatings along the way!) His dream about having the perfect son was pretty much a reality for Neil and Lucy kept her secret hidden deep as the time continued to pass and Emmett found himself receiving an acceptance letter from Oxford University, England.
It was a big choice to make, but he simply couldn’t turn down an opportunity like that. Emmett had applied as more of a “what the hell” joke, but getting in there was something incredible and he spoke to his parents about it, already set on the move to the new country. It was an emotional goodbye where even his annoying little sister cried, but soon Emmett found himself in a student hall in London, ready to study History at one of the best universities. There we no bullies here, but friends who found him unique and a little on the quirky side which only made more fun for the nights out and the adventures that only students could get up to! It was in Oxford that he also found his passion for rowing, even competing in the famous Oxford and Cambridge boat race for two years!
It was the experience of a lifetime, and Emmett stayed in Oxford to earn his teaching qualifications before getting a job in the beautiful English county, teaching history at one of the private schools there. He had intended on returning to Salem after his higher education was over, but the job was appealing and he still hadn’t had quite enough of England or of Oxford, so that was what swayed him in the end.
The kids there nicknamed him Mr Awkward because of the amount of “awkward moments” he would have in his class when using weird analogies or tales to try and make a point, always coughing and running his fingers through his hair when the kids weren’t amused or didn’t understand what he had just done. Emmett did make a good teacher and the kids passed his class, he just amused the teenagers with his quirky ways and usual habits.
He was twenty-six when a phone call woke him up in the middle of the night. His mother was hysterical on the other end and kept begging Emmett to come home. Taking compassionate leave from the school, Emmett took a flight back to Salem, panicking and concerned about what had happened, imagining the worst case scenario for almost everything. Carter had been hiding kidney failure from everyone for a while, but now he was in need of a new kidney and since the man had no living relatives he had to go on the waiting list and it didn’t seem promising. Neil had wanted to help, but his diabetes ruled him out as a possible donor before anything else. Emmett didn’t understand how he could help with this at all, but Lucy soon confessed the secret about his parentage, revealing to Emmett that he was in fact Carter’s only son.
The young man was reeling from the news and instantly found that hidden source of anger. He demanded answers and wouldn’t calm down until Lucy had told him everything. He was disgusted at his mom’s actions and angry at her too. He had been angry at Carter too for betraying Neil all those years ago, but he did have to feel some sympathy for the man when Lucy shamefully added that the dying man knew nothing of the truth. After some thinking, Emmett admitted himself for compatibility testing. Carter had been part of his life since he had been born and despite everything that he now knew, he did care for the man and didn’t want him to die or spend his years on dialysis.
He was a perfect match and told Lucy to tell Carter the truth. Emmett accompanied his mother that day to deliver the news, but made it very clear that it changed nothing. He was still going to be Neil’s son and Neil was going to know nothing about any of this; he didn’t deserve it. Emmett made his feelings on everything quite clear to the ex-couple, but added that he couldn’t ignore the results; he had to help Carter for everyone’s sake. The transplant went ahead successfully and Emmett’s kidney helped Carter get better again. Still, the history teacher was a changed man for knowing the truth and couldn’t get back into the swing of his old life.
Emmett gave up his job and Oxford, moving back to Salem for a short while to get himself in check. His anger at his mother remained and even now he still feels some resentment for the woman who lied to everyone for over a quarter of a century. He grew closer to Neil, who remained oblivious to the true parentage of his son, and just felt extremely proud of Emmett for saving the life of his best friend. To Carter, Emmett felt distant. Things were definitely awkward between them since the truth was revealed and Carter kept trying to talk to Emmett about it, expressing his sincere thanks time and time again, but Emmett couldn’t handle it and just told him that he didn’t owe him anything. He couldn’t handle it at all, and it just kept weighing on him, ruining every moment they all had together.
He needed an out, but when he tried his hand at teaching again it just didn’t sit right anymore. The truth had messed with his head more than he had needed it too and Emmett needed something entirely different from his life. He remembered his love for archaeology and after a late night documentary with the man he still thought of as his dad, Neil suggested that Emmett return to school and focus on that. The idea grew and flourished in Emmett’s mind and he took Neil’s advice, finding himself on a course in New York for the following fall semester.
Emmett hoped to find a life again with this new path and moved to New York the summer before his freshman year. It felt odd being older and being a student again, starting from scratch, but the moment he had the keys to his apartment, it also felt right. There was plenty of distance between him and the drama of Salem and he could focus his mind on something else, rather than Carter, Lucy and Neil. He got a job in the museum as a tour guide, specialising on the school trips, since he had been a teacher before. It’s going to be another four years of hard work, but Emmett is hoping that it’ll bring him some closure and the right life for him.
