PERSONALITY: Dylan practically oozes charisma. He’s a charmer and uses it to his advantage more times than he cares to count. It comes in useful calming patients down before surgery and works when he’s flirting with someone at a bar or nightclub! He’s also patient as his job requires him to be, especially if there’s a difficult or panicking patient. He’s calm and extremely compassionate because of incidents in his own life, but these are also traits that have helped him succeed in his ambitions. He never mixes business with pleasure, and tries hard not to take his work home with him. He’s seen what it does to some of the doctors and surgeons in the hospital and Dylan does not want to become like them. It goes without saying that he’s clever and extremely attentive to detail. He’s hard-working and always has been, but knows when enough is enough and when he needs a break. Away from work he has quite the creative side to him. He inherited his father’s love for restoring and decorating and adopted his mother’s love for art and is quite the keen painter when the mood strikes. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and would rather work on a project for a number of months rather than hire someone to do it in a few days. Dylan enjoys a good break from time to time and has some quirky activities that keep him feeling alive whenever he’s granted the time away from the hospital to pursue them. The only things he can’t keep out of his life are the nightmares that commonly come to life via stress or really bad days. He tries not to let them bother him, but they can make him somewhat defensive if people question him about why he woke up and stayed up. He can be quite the stubborn guy, but he always follows his heart and listens to the people around him, trying to do what is in their best interests, even if it’s not pleasing to his bosses. He’s never been a fighter, but he tries to smooth things over and talk things through instead. He’s quick to break up a fight if others are involved, but doesn’t like throwing a punch. Dylan isn’t the kind of guy to sit back and watch someone else get victimised or insulted and he’ll always stick up for them, whether he knows it or not. He can be quite the romantic when he’s with a girl, but sometimes lets it get the best of him or he falls too quickly meaning that he’s more likely to get his heart broken.

HISTORY: Dylan was the first child born to young sweethearts Sean and Clara. They were both young, but madly in love and once Clara discovered she was pregnant they got married in a small ceremony and began to make the plans for their future. Sean was very big on archaeology and often had to go away on trips to dig sites all over the world, leaving Clara at home with their bouncing baby boy. They were happy though and the money was enough to support this little lifestyle even when Freddie came along three short years later. A little while after came Georgina and they made quite the happy little family.
Dylan was eight when his little sister was born and he loved playing the big brother more than anything else in the world at that age. He was at a small Belfast school, had good friends, made good grades and everything seemed to be going well for him. When his dad was home they’d go on adventures and trips, coming back home with grand stories to tell to the rest of the family. It was a happy childhood and after acing his exams at age eleven, found himself with a well-deserved place at one of the grammar schools that would provide him with one of the best educations in the city. Within a few short months of joining the school though, Dylan began complaining of headaches and soon was sick and drowsy more than a boy of his age should be. It was one afternoon that Clara rushed her son to the hospital after realising it was more than just a stomach bug or a way to get out of school, getting a neighbour to care for Georgina and Freddie while she tried to get in touch with Sean who was in London on a business trip.
After the tests were conducted and scans complete, a doctor came to the family with terrifying news; Dylan had a malignant tumour on his brain. It was diagnosed as a Medulloblastoma and luckily caught relatively early compared to some. Instantly the doctors spoke about neurosurgery and the terrified parents agreed, with twelve year old Dylan not able to comprehend exactly what was happening. Kids like him shouldn’t have been getting sick, they should have been complaining about homework or fussing over bedtimes and curfews. Instead, he found himself getting prepped for surgery to see how much of the tumour they could remove before resorting to other treatments. He was one of the luckier kids and the neurosurgeon managed to remove 85% of the tumour, meaning the next step would be chemotherapy and not for as long as some kids had to have it for. After a few days in the ICU, Dylan began to return to his normal self, but there was a bit of a struggle with many things before he really got back to being as independent as any twelve year old could be.
He was kept off school for the duration of the chemotherapy treatment, as it made him drowsy and sick and not as sociable as he liked to be. However, Dylan insisted that his parents collect notes and school work from his teachers so that he didn’t fall behind. He actually enjoyed school and didn’t want to be left behind when he returned to the classroom to strange new things he had never heard of. His dad would help him with the new topics while his mum made sure that the two younger children understood what was happening and kept them occupied and happy. Dylan was tired and weak a lot of the time, but he remained stubborn and determined to keep on top of the work given to him each week with the help Sean provided him with. Eventually, just shortly after his thirteenth birthday, the treatment ended and the doctors were confident that Dylan was in remission and well enough to start returning to his normal life.
Things seemed to be looking up for the whole family and Sean found himself with the job offer of a lifetime. They wanted him in New York to help move and handle artefacts and displays coming into the city for the National History Museum. It was the promise of a fresh start for them all and they made the move to New York where life certainly did get better. Dylan returned to school only a little bit behind the rest of the kids his age and took extra classes and tutoring sessions to catch himself up, wanting to get those good grades again.
He did, and the doctors in New York kept their eye on him, happy that there had been no side effects to any of the surgery or treatments so far. He looked like he was well on his way to a full and happy life and his parents were hardly surprised when he announced that he wanted to go into neurosurgery when he was older already working hard to make sure he got the grades.
Disaster hit the Griffin family again when Dylan was fifteen. Sean was killed in a car accident on the interstate. The family grieved, but Dylan buried himself in his work to hide his own pain. It was around this time that the nightmares began, but he kept them to himself too, thinking that he had to be strong now to support his siblings and to help his mother. He also got the first and only side effect of the cancer treatment from his earlier years; migraines. Luckily, the doctors found a medication that got rid of them almost as quickly as they came, making his life easy and less disrupted. The family contemplated moving back to Belfast, but Clara decided that uprooting her children again when they had just got their lives in order would be a mistake. For a little while, things stayed like that; moving on from Sean’s death, until one night Dylan heard his mother laughing and went downstairs to see her drinking wine with another man, one who he recognised as the man who gave her a life home from work most nights. Shortly after that, she told her children that she was in a relationship with that man: Justin Oswald.
The news changed the family. Freddie rebelled, Georgina didn’t understand most of it and Dylan once again buried himself in his work. The improvements and the extra classes he took on to try and ignore what the family problems meant that he would have enough credits and the right grades to graduate from high school a year early and get a head start on the career he dreamed of. It was hard for him to accept when Clara found herself with a new engagement ring and the baby bump quickly followed too. His siblings didn’t seem to like it either and Justin moving in with them only caused Freddie to misbehave more. Eventually, Dylan realised that he ought to do something instead of hiding in his textbooks so he talked his brother down and worked to make the family closer, though he made it clear to both his mother and step-father that Justin would never be a dad to him. He could learn to accept him in the home and he did get along with the man, but he made Justin promise to never try and be his father. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better than what they had had with tense dinners and teenage tantrums all the time.
He was accepted into NYU to study to become a neurosurgeon and got his first real taste of freedom, away from his family just before his mother fell pregnant again with her last child. He got to enjoy some aspects of the student lifestyle, but primarily was focused on his studies, taking on extra classes and assignments to get closer to his dream with better grades and increased knowledge, which he managed to do after sessions of sleepless nights in the library and rescheduled family dinners. Eventually, it became time for him to start his residency, which was something he had been unable to contain his excitement for. NYU had a great programme for the residents and Dylan was lucky enough to get noticed and get on it. It was several long years of hard work and endless amounts of pressure, but Dylan found a way to get through most of it.
Now, he’s the Chief Resident of Neurosurgery and finishing up his final postgraduate year before he’s on his own out there. He spends most of his time in the hospital helping the younger residents and takes on the more serious and delicate operations now. This extra resident year on the programme he chose means that the transition from resident to attending is barely noticeable and he’s gained extra confidence to deal with things without second guessing himself. When he’s not working he spends time with his friends and family, often babysitting his little sisters on the evenings when he’s not on call or out with friends. There’s still a lot he’s looking for in his life, but there’s time for that and he’s happy doing what he does; saving lives.
