PERSONALITY: Oberon is definitely a thinker and rather on the brooding side with it some of the time. He's most definitely a listener who will actually listen to someone rambling incessantly for hours on end. Observant he usually a good judge of character and can read people rather well, much to their surprise. Oberon might come across as quiet but he's not at all shy. He just doesn't speak up unless he has something to say or a question to ask. No matter where life takes him he always feels out of place which is a massive throwback from his youth and the troubles he had when he was growing up. He's mostly a calm man who had quite a soothing temperament on others, though he doesn't quite know why. Articulate, Oberon takes great form at the front of a lecture hall or classroom, with many of his students describing the simple guy as inspiring for making them really think about life, situations and just about everything else. Oberon is a caring man and not just when it comes to people close to him. He cares about just about everything and isn't afraid to show it. Some may call him an enigma since he'll talk very little about himself, but very explicitly about the world around him instead. Like most, he does have a temper that flares only for certain things. However, when it does flare he turns into quite the aggressive man who isn't afraid to get into a fight. Thankfully, there are only a few things that would trigger such a reaction from Oberon and they are usually things he can stop happening before he reaches that point of exploding. He seems to attract women because of that brooding enigma image he doesn't even realise he emits to the rest of the world, but in truth, Oberon is far from the smoothest of men. He bumbles his way through most dates and when he's around someone he likes he reverts back into that nervous teenage boy who makes bad jokes and even worse chat up lines. However, if they give him a chance beyond that, they can see that Oberon is a nice guy with only good intentions. He's a scholarly romantic though, so his dates should expect museums and tours and cultural vacations from him. He hopes to settle down one day, but Oberon isn't really one for worrying too much about finding Mrs. Right.MOTHER: Sabrina Heidi Jones, 55.
FATHER: Markus Benjamin Jones, 57.
SIBLINGS: N/A.
OTHERS: N/A.
PETS: Ralphie, a bullmastiff of four!
HOMETOWN: Berlin, Germany.
HISTORY: Jones might not seem like a typical German name, but that was because Markus' father fell in love and moved to the country from Scotland after the second world war. Markus himself met his wife through his father, who arranged the date after Markus had turned twenty-one. They fell in love, but Sabrina always had dreams of moving to America. So, to please the woman who would one day be his wife, they did just that. They saved up and planned to move out there. The only thing that delayed their plans was that Sabrina fell pregnant and wanted to have their baby in Germany. Ever the hater of the “so common” worldwide name of Jones, Sabrina wanted their son to have a memorable name and she certainly gave him one. Oberon Wynter Jones was born in the autumn when the leaves were still clinging desperately to the trees. His first two years were spent in Berlin, but after that the little family moved to America, finding a home in Slatersville, Rhode Island.
The promise of happiness was short lived. Sabrina left the family after just six months in the country, finding some other man who she wanted to be with. She didn't even try to keep in contact with her son and Oberon's last memory of her is her shouting at him in German when he tried to grab her and make her stay in their small house, shoving him away and shouting more as she left. After that things were tough. Markus didn't speak English very well and his skills were rather limited. Alone he couldn't afford to keep up with the bills on their home and he knew that he had to find another place for him and his son. The only job he was offered in six months of non=stop looking was that of a cemetery caretaker. It came with a small house within the borders of the cemetery and it was Markus' job to keep on top of maintenance and work for the funerals and the small team he had who reported in at 9am every morning. It was up to him to lock the gates on time and open them in the morning, as well as deal with any troublemakers or damage. It put a roof over their heads and it brought in enough money to make ends meet and put food on the table.
Oberon never had the greatest time when he was growing up. If his name wasn't enough to grab the attention of bullies then his home was. He was the creepy kid who lived in the graveyard and the kids in his class would constantly torment and bully him about it, as well as his heritage once they learnt that he was from Germany. Oberon had no friends as a child, so he spent a lot of time just walking around the cemetery, looking at the old graves mixed with the new ones. There was a church where a lot of the funeral services were held and sometimes he'd creep in the back and listen to the stories about the people and the priest talk. He became fascinated by death and the ideas and beliefs that surrounded it. From there he wanted to know more and would read books and articles about demons and hell, as well as stories about angels and their side of the story. Oberon was never religious; something he found himself repeating a lot when he was growing up and trying to explain his interests. He was just fascinated by the theology and philosophy that surrounded humanity and how the rituals and beliefs had changed and adapted over time. With no friends to distract him, he learnt about just about everything surrounding these topics and he enjoyed it all. He was taught to play guitar by one of the other men who helped his dad on a daily basis and it became a fun hobby that relaxed him and that he could share with his dad.
His tale wasn't one of happiness when he reached high school. People still found him incredibly freaky and while teachers might praise some of his creative work which came from his hobbies, the other kids found it too much to handle and just bullied him even more. When he was sixteen, on Halloween, a group of idiotic kids from his school headed to the cemetery to try to bother Oberon. Oberon was at home, he never went out on Halloween since he had no one to enjoy it with. He was reading a book for history class and ignored the taunts he could hear from outside. As a twisted prank to try and get Oberon outside so they could bully him some more, they smashed a window and tossed in a firework. Oberon didn't notice this at first since headphones and music cancelled out a lot of the noise he was deliberately trying to ignore. The firework caught light to the furnishings and it happened so quickly that Oberon never got a chance to react. The fire spread rapidly through the small one floor home and it was only when he was coughing on the smoke that he realised something was wrong. By that point the kids responsible had fled the scene with only one of them pausing to call the emergency services anonymously. The fire had spread too far and Oberon only had small windows in his bedroom that even smashed he couldn't have climbed out of; they were too narrow. He tried, he tried everything to escape the heat, the smoke and the flames but ultimately he collapsed as the fire lapped at his bedroom door and the fabric he had jammed around the frame to try and buy more time. He was carried out by a fireman when they arrived and taken to hospital. Markus was out on a date with a lovely woman he had met while all this happened, so he knew nothing about it until he got a phone call from the hospital to tell him that Oberon had been brought in.
He spent a week in hospital going under monitoring and observation. Oberon had some smoke damage that left him raspy and breathless at only the littlest of things. This got better with time, but the memories from that night haunted him for much longer. Their belongings were almost entirely destroyed, but their home still structurally sound. Oberon wasted no time in naming the kids responsible and he felt no guilt whatsoever over doing it, even if their friends tried to defend them when he did return to school a little while later. Ever since then even lit candles are enough to make Oberon feel uneasy.
Getting out of high school was the best thing that ever happened to Oberon. He went to university to study philosophy and helped his dad by digging the graves when it was necessary. He had stayed close to home for his father's sake. At college he was more accepted and started to make friends for the first time in his life. A welcome change to say the least, Oberon crawled out of his shell and found more things to enjoy about the world and about the people in it. It was during his junior year that a friend asked him to lend his voice to a project he was putting together for his animation class. Oberon happily helped out and it was the professor of that course who asked him for another job, this time a paid one. Oberon thought “why the hell not?” and went ahead with it. From there he found more doors opening, since he could do a decent mix of voices that people wanted.
It had never been his intention to get into voice work, but it had happened and after he graduated it was what he stuck with for a number of years. He moved to New York where the jobs were more accessible and occasionally he flew out to LA for work. It paid handsomely and a tiny little following developed from the people who enjoyed the shows and games he lent his voice to. When he was twenty-seven he decided that he wanted to get back to his true passion of philosophy and so started cutting back on the voice work gigs to get a chance to impress an academic board who eventually gave him a shot at a teaching spot opened up suddenly at NYU when the originally professor took ill. It was unfortunate circumstances, but Oberon's time to shine. Ever since then the job has been his permanently, but he still does the voice work when he can since cutting it out completely left him feeling as though he was missing something from his life.
At twenty-nine, he's relatively happy. Of course there are things he'd like to change, but he has classes of aspiring students who look up to him, a still brightly burning career in voice work if he ever decides teaching isn't for him and the chance to play some of the most iconic roles in history. His latest being The Joker in a new Batman video game. He's still looking for his other half, still hoping that there is more out there for him to find, but Oberon is a content man for the time being.
