❊ DO MY DANCE ❊
Esme walked into the dance room placing her duffle bag on the far wall. Stretching in the middle of the wood paneled floor, Esme looked around and let out a soft sigh. She still couldn't believe that she was here. It was only months ago that she came home to an empty house. Her parents and her little brother deported back to Mexico and she was left alone. Her parents contacted her through a phone at a restaurant. They told her to stay in the States even though she so desperately wanted to be reunited with her family. This university was her only hope at being with them again. She was working hard to become a successful dancer. When she wasn't at school practicing, she was at the tattoo parlor, making as much money as she could so she could send what she could spare to her family. This often meant she didn't go out very much. While she loved to go to clubs to dance and shop with friends, New York wasn't the place to do it. With prices jacked up so high, Esme spent most of her time on campus keeping to herself and dancing. She had only been at the university for a couple of months, but she still had not made any real friends.
Finishing up her stretches, Esme stood up and walked over to the stereo system. She put on a song by Tyga to warm up to. She was good. Really good. Esme was a hip-hop dancer, but that didn't mean she could turn around and dance to a contemporary routine. Music and dance were her life and she dedicated all that she was to it. She was going to be the best at the university. The best in the state. She would compete and become famous. She'd make money and give her family a good life. She would bring awareness to immigration and use her voice to help people. That was her goal, and no one would get in the way.
