DISLIKES: sandy beaches, Thanksgiving, feeling like a third wheel, cold meals, rare steaks, spiders, large classes, insomnia, needles, hospital visits, gory movies, garages, tea, Irish Cream liquor, facial piercings, crazy fanatics, warm nights, spring allergies, poppies, laundry days, working when he's tired, his hands feeling sticky/slimy/dry really anything other than normal, moths getting in his bedroom.
FEARS: Spiders, losing his family, hospices.
SECRETS: He's kept a journal ever since he was twelve years of age. He keeps them all in a locked cabinet in his room and uses them to help work through things sometimes. Also, while it's not really a secret, Maddox tries not to speak too much about his time in the hospital or why he was there.
PERSONALITY: Maddox is a quiet man who keeps to the minimum words and who doesn't chat on, which means it can be difficult to make small talk with him. He's inquisitive but tries not to be nosy; although it doesn't always play out like that. He likes studying people, learning what makes them tick and what they like and all the reasons why. Some people can find it annoying when he uses it on them, but Maddox doesn't think he'll ever be able to switch it off. He's a caring man with a good heart, but he can initially come across as distant and aloof when in reality he's just a rather shy and mostly private guy. He's somewhat family-centric but at the same time manages to feel really lonely in the world. Maddox knows he's a man with problems but he does his best to try not to burden anyone else with his own inner demons or doubts. He probably overthinks things and frequently puts himself down, but soldiers on through it. He desires many things that others might take for granted, but currently he feels like he's in no place to chase them. He's cautious perhaps a little too much, but Maddox is a guy who likes to live his life slowly and with thought put into his actions. He's a thoughtful guy who probably spends too much time with his own mind for it to be considered healthy. He enjoys his solitude, but at the same time isn't a loner. Maddox just prefers to keep small company rather than be a part of a large social group. He would choose lunch with friends over a loud nightclub any day of the week. Maddox only loses his cool when the right buttons are pressed and if that happens he can be terrifying. There's a lot he keeps control of, but for him to snap means he completely loses that refined edge. Maddox doesn't enjoy it, but he can throw a mean punch and protect the people he cares about. He's a little apprehensive of romance these days, but he can still provide an elegant date for the right woman. Maddox is only a man, so he's capable of letting lust get the better of him, but he's not exactly proud when this sort of thing happens. What he really wants is what his sister has; a happy family.

HISTORY: Louise and Wade Atkinson were married almost straight out of high school. A small wedding with just family and a few loyal friends. They were young, but madly in love and they didn't want Wade's scholarship to Ohio State to rip them apart. Louise was staying home to help out her family after her father suffered a heart attack. She worked long hours at a drug store and put her own dreams on hold for a very long time. Wade graduated and came home where he soon took to coaching high school football. Louise went to a local community college to get a business degree in the hopes of starting up her own dress making shop out of the spare room of the apartment they had rented. Obviously they wanted more out of life and worked hard to save up enough money to buy a house of their own. It was only after this did they start talking about settling down and raising a family.
Maddox was their first born son and Wade's pride and joy. Passing down the family name was a big deal to him and so a son was a big weight off his shoulders. Maddox was a relatively healthy little baby. He got sick a little bit more than most, but the doctors couldn't find anything seriously wrong with him to contribute this to. Maddox had barely turned one when Louise gave birth to their second child and their daughter, Tara. Two children seemed perfect for their little family and with the siblings close in age they grew up being almost inseparable, developing strengths where the other had weaknesses.
Wade wanted Maddox to be a sporting fanatic like he was, but Maddox was more fascinated by the world around him, frequently annoying adults by asking countless questions, demanding to know the reasons why things happened, and always getting caught eavesdropping on the stairs when Louise had friends over. He was an inquisitive little boy who was also pretty smart. His teachers were always commending his work and suggesting that he really apply himself to his future since he could go far. Wade was a little disappointed that Maddox had no interest in sports at all, but he was also accepting of the fact and never tried to force it on his son like some parents might have done.
Maddox kept to himself a lot, but there was no harm in it. At home he played with his sister and at he had a few other friends from school too. He wasn't a trouble maker and he was a pretty sensible kid who only cracked his head open once when he took a tumble down the stairs one morning when he was half asleep. He was a quiet but happy little boy who didn't really want a lot out of his life that he didn't already have. He was content, peaceful and things were going well for the whole family.
It was Thanksgiving and Maddox was twelve when that illusion was shattered. They were supposed to be hosting a big dinner for everyone and he went out with his mom before breakfast to get some extra bits that had been forgotten or she felt they might need. They were rushing around the supermarket when Louise collapsed suddenly. She died before the ambulance reached the hospital. It was soon discovered that Louise had an undiagnosed heart condition that had ultimately killed her, but none of that mattered. They were children without a mother and a man without his wife. Thanksgiving was never celebrated since that fateful year and every time it came by again it was an excuse for Wade to hit the bottle and lash out at the people around him and for Maddox and Tara to mourn their mother while taking care of their wasted dad.
Maddox did not come out of his mother's death well. For months he had nightmares about what had happened and he disappeared into his shell. He began feeling detached from the world around him and suffering from mild anxiety problems. He spent a lot of time with the school psychologist trying to talk through it all with her. It was this experience that led to his fascination with psychology and ultimately led to him pursuing it in the future. Slowly he came back to himself and it was believed that his age, the turbulence of teenage years and the shock from losing a parental figure had led to him feeling somewhat detached from his own existence. In many ways his ordeal was swept under the rug this time.
He made it through high school relatively unscathed. He was neither popular nor unpopular, had first first kiss and girlfriend, tasted his first sip of alcohol...normal teenage things. There were still whispers around school and the neighbourhood when Thanksgiving rolled around the Atkinsons locked themselves away for the holiday, but they weren't think he and Tara couldn't handle together. He was accepted to Ohio State University to study Psychology and a year later Tara moved out to New York to study over there. They remained close despite the distance between them and the frequent calls got them through the tough times, the deadline breakdowns and just about everything else.
At university Maddox met Rebecca. She was a pretty girl who studied journalism and had high dreams of making it in the world. They fell in love and at their graduation Maddox proposed to Rebecca. She said yes and they balanced moving in together with job hunting and further education. They didn't want to rush into the wedding and Rebecca had big plans for their special day that would probably prove costly. They set up a wedding fund, slowly adding to it when they could and planning a five year engagement so they could have the most perfect day for themselves and for their guests. All the details were coming together and while they had to officially book everything the costs and ideas were on paper at their small, but cosy little home. Maddox thought everything was great until one night he came home and saw Rebecca with her bags packed. A job offer had come her way but would send her to Asia. Apparently when it came down to it, Asia sounded more promising than a future with Maddox. He pleaded with her to stay, but nothing could change Rebecca's mind and she left him that night, boarded a plane the following morning and he never saw her again.
Once again Maddox found his world crumbling around him. He had thought he had everything worked out for him, that his happy ending was just around the corner. Everything spiralled out of control from there. First he missed work, then he stopped answering calls...he was found wandering down the side of the road almost fifty miles away from where he lived. Tara came back to Ohio out of concern for her brother's well-being, but he was so distant it was like he was barely even there. It was Maddox who decided he needed a break from everything and voluntarily checked himself into hospital to receive better treatment. In hospital the mild depression was treated along with depersonalization-derealization disorder, which accounted for how he was feeling so out of touch with reality. He stayed in the hospital for treatment until he felt like he wouldn't be burdening his sister or his father. Given his past experiences with psychology after his mother passed, doctors there suggested he might have been through this once before, but it went unrecognised due to his age and the trauma suffered. This time it manifested much more clearly and with a more serious effect on his life and the world around him.
When he was feeling better and had the situation under control with medication, Maddox was released from the hospital and allowed to return to his usual life. However after going through what he had he didn't feel like he ought to be helping others now. He quit his job and spent a lot of time wondering about his future. During all of this Tara stepped up to deal with him. She didn't want to head back to New York and leave Maddox in the state he was and she was scared about him vanishing again. After talking it through she convinced him to come to New York and move in with her and her husband and daughter. They converted the basement into a separate apartment just for Maddox so he could have his own place for the time being and to grant him some privacy.
After a few months of being an uncle and babysitter, Maddox eventually turned his thoughts to teaching his passion. He applied and was accepted to the post at NYU. Tara wanted to keep him around a little longer for her own piece of mind and Maddox, unable to say no, did. So that brings him to where he is today. He teaches psychology at NYU and then returns to his apartment under his sister's house. He wants to move out to find a place of his own, but he enjoys being close to family and Tara enjoys keeping him around for more reasons than just babysitting purposes. The day will eventually come, but right now they're back to being as inseparable as they were through childhood.
