ALEC RYERSON KELLEY
FULL NAME: Alexander Kelley Ryerson
NICKNAMES: Alec
AGE: Thirty
GENDER: male
SEXUALITY: Straight
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Book Publisher.HAIR: Messy, bordering professional dark curly hair that’s almost black. He usually just runs a brush and so product through it and be done with it but he has been known to get bored and bleach a single spot for the hell of it.
EYES: brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: a couple from rugby but he doesn’t think they’re all that interesting.
TATTOOS: He has the Chinese symbols for Knowledge and Strength on his one arm while the other has a design from the Book of Kells. And he has the quote “Not all those who wander are lost” in a nice script on his shoulder blade. And of course, he’s always thinking about more.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Aidan Turner! <3LIKES: coffee with too much hazelnut cream, chocolate chip cookies, books, reading, a night out with friends, anything that makes him laugh, old black and white films, finding a new author, rugby, a good workout, a long jog, water, books that pull him in and keep him in, rum and cola, casual suits, the feeling of giving a thumbs up to a new author, engaging conversation, intelligent, strong, independent women.
DISLIKES: turning away a manuscript, black coffee, those slutty club girls, boring conversation, dulling the ache with alcohol, forgetting a birthday, missing a call, rodents, spending hours on the phone with his mother, most movies, ties, late night infomercials.
FEARS: Never having a family of his own, being fired, rodents.
SECRETS: Despite his views on romance (He’s all for sweeping the women in his life off their feet), Alec is scared out of his mind of settling down with someone; having someone expecting him to be home at a certain time, waiting for him or asking how his day was over dinner. He enjoys the company of women but when things start looking really serious, he’s had a terrible habit in the past of tucking tail and running for the hills. He thinks if he found the right woman, this silly little fear he’s kept to himself will cease to exist!
PERSONALITY: Alec is a clever man. He was surrounded by books from the time he could read and loved it all. Being more of a brain than anything else, he still enjoys a little athletic activity. He played rugby through his teenage years with school so he’s tough. Like books and covers, you can’t just Alec by appearances. He looks like a big bad wolf with his usually scruffy face and unruly curls but the man is quite possibly the sweetest man on the planet. He’s an only child and was a sickly one at that so his parents were worried and had been scared most of his childhood that he wouldn’t live through it so they gave him just about anything he wanted. Thankfully it didn’t go to his head and turn him into a major jerk. Instead he lost himself in the worlds created by the likes of Jules Verne, J. R. R. Tolkien and even Jane Austen. He’s a smart man but doesn’t flaunt it. He’s well aware he will never be the smartest man in the room but takes pride in knowing he’s not the stupidest one either. Alec is really a giant teddy bear with a sunny smile. He may not always sport it but when he lets those pearly whites shine, ladies have been known to swoon. He’s not at all a ladies man but he is a bit of a flirt and he’s definitely a charmer; with that smile? It’s only natural!MOTHER: Nadine Kelley (nee Ryerson), 60.
FATHER: Paul Kelley & 62.
SIBLINGS: N/A.
OTHERS: N/A.
PETS: Kili, Husky!
HOMETOWN: Belfast, Northern Ireland.
HISTORY: Natalie had been told she couldn’t have children. And she and Paul had made their peace that there would be no children of their own in their future. So they adopted dogs and at one point had five of them in their house. Their dogs became their children and then Natalie started getting sick and rushing off to the bathroom to introduce the toilet to whatever meal she’d just eaten. She could barely get out of bed to go to work; which since she was an artist most days of the week, wasn’t a good thing. Finally on a day when she had to go into the art gallery she owned, she made an appointment with her doctor and after she’d done the paperwork she’d gone to the gallery for, headed over to see if there was some sort of test that could be done. The doctor ran all sorts of test, took blood samples and sent Nadine on her way to get as much rest as she could and to not do anything strenuous. And considering it was the first time she’d been out of her bed for longer than ten minutes, she didn’t think that would be too much of a problem.
It took three days for the tests to come back and the doctor called immediately, demanding Nadine get to the office as soon as possible. With her condition, it was rare for a pregnancy to occur, never mind get to full term and Nadine was already close to four months pregnant. The doctor put her on strict bed rest until the baby was born and when she was two weeks shy of six months; she was put in hospital to monitor everything. As happy as the couple were that they were having a baby, neither got overly excited about it. They knew the chances of their baby being born healthy, or even alive. Chances were higher that their baby would be born premature or as a stillborn then if the baby made it full term. Nadine went into labour at half past one in the morning and a little after three, their son Alec was born a full six weeks early. There were concerns for the baby but they held hope that everything would turn out alright. Neither Nadine nor Paul cared if their child grew up with any sort of disabilities, they were just shocked and amazed they had a child at all.
Thankfully, Alec was released from the hospital when he should have been born. From there it was fairly smooth sailing. He developed the flu a bit more than most kids; he had a terrible case of asthma as a child and therefore had opted out of sports and gym class. As a result he read a ton of books growing up. Puberty came about and Alex sprung up a bit more, filled out his gangly frame and didn’t have to use his inhalers as often. He took this as a good sign and joined a gym. He was still excused from gym activities but he really wasn’t all that upset about that fact. He didn’t really enjoy the sports they were forced to play anyway. In the next year, he used his inhaler so infrequently; he often forgot it was even in his backpack unless he stumbled across it looking for something. Taking this as another sign, Alec signed up for the school’s rugby team. He enjoyed watching the sport on television and had always thought it would be a fun game to play in a rough and tumble sort of way. His coaches were a little worried and often tried to keep him on the bench as much as they could but it wasn’t always the case and Alec proved himself time and time again, so they put him in more and more.
University rolled around and Alec had some tough choices ahead of him. Did he want to stay local and attend school so his parents wouldn’t worry so much or did he want to go somewhere else for school? In the end, he chose a little of both. He attended school in the UK but far enough that it took a short train ride to get home. He stayed in the dorms while he got his degree and then, once school was all over, went back home for a short time to figure out where he wanted to go; what his next step was. In the end, his next step sort of fell into his lap. A friend of his from school had been raiding the internet for international job listings hoping to find something abroad and stumbled across a low level position at a book publisher that he thought would have been perfect for Alec. So he e-mailed him the link and annoyed Alec until he sent off a resume. He was granted a phone interview, which was followed by a Skype interview and then an offer which after looked over, Alec accepted. Fast forward a few years of exciting New York City life, Alec was promoted to head the Young Adult supernatural/dystopian fiction department. It hadn’t been where he wanted to be at the beginning but the manuscripts he read or the first drafts coming from their already established authors were catching, they pulled him in and after only a couple weeks, he’d come to realise he was in the perfect place. So many manuscripts were delivered to the publisher; the company had a dozen different departments to deal with it all. So being the head of one was a great honour and it went to show how dedicated to the job Alec was. At thirty now, Alec is attempting a social life outside of work while trying to keep up with the work that covered his desk and the area surrounding it.
