PERSONALITY: Artemis is actually a sweet girl who just wants the freedom in her own life. She's quiet and a little on the kooky side at times, but overall she's a nice girl who just didn't live up to her parent's expectations. She's relaxed in life, but not so relaxed that she doesn't care at all. Missy is a hard working kind of girl who likes to try to achieve everything she would like to accomplish in her life. She's quite emotional but more in the sense that she wears her heart on her sleeve rather than she cries at every little thing. She's a reliable girl who can be counted on to come through for someone in most situations. Friendly, Missy won't turn away a potential new friend, but she's also wary since she's had very few trustworthy friends over the years and has often been quite the lonely soul. Those feelings still surface even now. Also, she's creative and very frugal, since she's usually the one to deal with the monthly budgeting and the bills. In many ways she is responsible, but at the same time she's also the first person to say “fuck it” and take off for the weekend for a festival or just for a trip to somewhere new, so she's got a bit of a free-spirit side to her personality. HISTORY: Annalise and Matthew had both planned to have the perfect little family. They met and married young, waited a little while for financial stability and then began planning out for the future. Born first was their son Preston, followed by Artemis four years later. They were a family who held a decent reputation, a sizeable estate to cater for their two children and everything painted this perfect picture of a promising future. Preston and Artemis were raised with good, proper manners and taught to respect every single person they ever met. Frequently strangers would compliment Annalise on her perfect children who would never put a toe out of line when they were young. Annalise and Matthew held high moral values that they passed onto their children. They believed in old, and some out-dated, traditions and enforced nothing but good, nurturing things for Preston and Artemis.
Both children were enrolled in Catholic school, attended church with their parents every Sunday and were raised to be nothing less than saintly in both mannerisms and appearances. They had to mix with good people, have the right sort of friends and everything they did was inspected and looked over by both parents before it was okay. When they were younger it would just be the likes of having a sleepover at a friend's house or a birthday party, but when they started becoming more independent and growing up, it became a little stricter. Shopping trips and purchases were examined to make sure they weren't buying inappropriate items or clothing. Missy had to clean out her wardrobe when she had growth spurts so that any skirts or shorts weren't too short, and tops weren't cropped. They were a very proud, conservative family and expected their children to grow up and have similar values and families too.
Artemis and Preston often just played along to please their parents. They were both different in ways that they knew wouldn't be approved of. Neither believed in the religion they were spoon-fed on a daily basis. Missy would read comics and listen to music on big headphones. Preston was forced to secretly date when he was in school since they were frequently reminded about the consequences of giving into temptation and hormones.
At school, Missy's differences did lead to her being bullied and because she wasn't as débutante like as most of the girls in her class then they thought she was a freak. Verbally, she heard it every day and would do everything she could to try to avoid the torment. She knew telling her parents would lead to other questions about why she wasn't excited about social dinners or church events. It was easier to cry in the bathroom over lunch than deal with that. One day, enough was enough and Missy cut class to escape it all. She ended up just walking until she stumbled across a young man busking on the street. She stayed to watch him for a while and when he took a break he approached her and introduced himself. Mikey was older than Artemis, but there were instant sparks and he was the first person who Missy had met who she felt like she could relate to.
Despite knowing better, she began dating Mikey in secret. It was only when Annalise was told by a concerned friend about this mystery man did the roof almost get blown off. She shouted at Artemis about shame, sin and ruining her life. Matthew was the one who decided they should meet the man. Missy knew she had been cornered and reluctantly brought Mikey home. She was sixteen, he was twenty. He was nothing like the prim and proper boy they had wanted for their baby girl. It didn't go down as a good meeting and Missy was offered the ultimatum of breaking up with him or getting out. A teenager craving freedom from religious constraints and a world she didn't belong in, Missy surprisingly chose Mikey.
She was thrown out and Preston ended up playing the mediator for a while. Missy moved in with Mikey when he told her how much he loved her. Preston tried to get everyone to see sense, but Missy knew her parents needed time and the parents were adamant that they wanted nothing to do with their daughter any more. Apparently, they even took down the photos with her in and turned her room into a guest room. It was overkill, but there was nothing that Artemis could do. She didn't want to go back to the conservative life that had tried to mould her into something she wasn't.
The drama also led to Artemis dropping out of school and finishing her education with online classes. They also moved to New York so that Mikey could chase his dreams and maybe have a chance at making them a reality. Artemis took on a job as a waitress to bring in a steady wage for their small apartment. She didn't know what she wanted for her own future just yet since she hadn't really ever had the freedom to think about it until now. So, she worked while Mikey chased dreams. They didn't have much, but they had each other and a beat up car which offered them an escape whenever they needed it.
More time passed, their love remained and while Mikey didn't catch the break he was hoping for, he never gave up hope and neither did Artemis. She turned twenty-one and finally found the chance and the dream to chase. She enrolled in NYU to study interior design and kept up working to make sure they could survive. Times are getting tighter now and their relationship is really being put to the test, but they're hanging on right now and Missy hopes that continues.
