DISLIKES: hangovers, feeling angry, people being disappointed in him, slipping up, listening to the lectures from his parents, his “perfect” older brother, people looking down on him, arrogant people, losing his temper, making mistakes, when he’s injured and can’t play basketball, fairy tales, idealism, feeling pressured, his truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere, cops, sappy love songs, high maintenance girls, people writing him off, drugs, the colour pink, hospitals, medication, gossip and rumours.[.
FEARS: heights, ending up back in old habits, falling in love.
SECRETS: Flynn’s rebellious life pushed him into drugs and fighting when he was seventeen. His family forced him to get help and turn his life around before he wound up in jail. He might be on the straight and narrow now, but he still doesn’t feel like he has them to thank for anything.
PERSONALITY: Flynn, these days, spends a little too much time working out. The boy is athletic and pushes nearly every free minute he has into some form of physical activity. He’s hot-headed and has a short temper, but this is why he spends a lot of time at the gym. He’s learnt to box, swim and bounce his frustrations away rather than taking them out on people and he has got a pretty decent handle on things now! He’s impatient at times and doesn’t like secrets, despite being one himself. He doesn’t expect much from himself and has very little confidence, but that’s thanks to his upbringing and the put downs he received from a young age. He’s not the smartest kid you’ll ever meet, nowhere near it in fact, but he’s passionate and dedicated. He’s currently trying to prove everyone wrong, but Flynn is also fickle and spontaneous so who knows if it’ll stick. In many ways, he’s your reformed bad boy with just a hint of danger still left in him. He really is trying, but no one is perfect and Flynn is still learning a lot about himself. He likes to keep busy so that he doesn’t have the time to be tempted by the demons of his past and he really is hoping that this is the time he turns his life around for good. He’s secretive about his past because it’s not exactly something he wants people to know about when they first meet him. He’s scared of screwing up again or letting someone down, and this can make him irrational and push people away. He doesn’t mean to be difficult but sometimes it’s all he knows. His love life has been flings and meaningless hook-ups since he knew how to play the game. The idea of love is something that scares him since he’s never really had that much to lose before. He won’t ever be Prince Charming, but the right girl might just bring out that good guy that’s hidden deep down somewhere. As for confrontations, Flynn has seen his fair share and he’s not afraid to throw a punch or seven. He’s trying to keep control of that for his future and his position at NYU but it’s not always easy and in New York City there’s always someone around to piss him off. He’s not the easiest guy to make friends with, but once someone does then he sees them as a friend for life and will go out of his way and sometimes too far to make sure they have no problems. He may be a troubled kid, but he’s making a real effort to change all of that – he just needs a helping hand here and there.

HISTORY: Flynn was the second child born into the large Nielsen family. As far as he’s concerned though, his parents ought to have stopped after Matthew. Their first born was their pride and joy and the kid who aced all the tests at school, had all the right friends and who could do no wrong. Well, Flynn was nothing like that.
From a young age he found himself drawn to trouble. It also didn’t help that his earliest memories also involved the birth of Sasha and that he barely got any attention from his parents between the fussing of the first and third born children. Victor and Karen never did it intentionally, of course, but between getting money to support the family and looking after the baby and listening to the praise Matthew received at school it was almost like Flynn was able to and entertain himself. Kids who don’t get attention though start to act out and Flynn was no different. At first he’d do things around the house like break a vase or a toy to cause a scene but when that failed to work and Karen fell pregnant again, he progressed to tormenting the neighbour’s kids or ripping up flowers in gardens. People said it was just a phase with another baby on the way, but it seemed to be one Flynn didn’t grow out of for a long time.
At school he didn’t care for most of the classes and would only act insolent most of the time. He didn’t make the same amazing grades as his big brother and every time a teacher compared him to the older Nielsen son it only worked to infuriate him more. While his parents were called in often for Matthew’s praise, with their second son it only ever seemed to be to report his bad behaviour. They tried talking to him, but he didn’t want to listen. He despised Matthew for being perfect at everything and his younger siblings for taking up his parent’s time. Even if he did do something well, he never had the time to show it off because one baby would cry or Karen would feel the next sprog kick. He hated it and it only fuelled his anger as he got older and became more unruly.
By the time high school came around, Karen and Victor spent most of their time focusing on their five children who did behave and Flynn was beyond their reach for a period of time. He was in with a rough crowd, snuck out most nights and didn’t care about what school had to offer him. He started using drugs and drinking and there really was no one who could get through to him. Matthew even tried, but he just got a black eye and a mouthful of abuse from Flynn who wanted nothing to do with the perfect son that came before him. It got out of hand. Flynn was in trouble with the cops, he was almost expelled from his school and most of the time he didn’t remember where he was or what he had done. Waking up in a strange place with bruises on his face and cuts on his knuckles seemed to be the norm and all he did was get up, go home, change and then start this reckless behaviour all over again; fighting, thieving and doing whatever he could just to get his kicks. If he wasn’t going to be the perfect son then he could go all out to be the worst, right?
Eventually, after another handcuffed escort home the police spoke to his parents, explaining to them that something needed to be done or else Flynn would end up in jail and probably in even deeper trouble. That was how Flynn, at seventeen, found himself sitting in a strange place with someone apparently certified to help him.
He’d never thought of himself as an addict of any kind and neither did the doctor who treated him. Flynn’s main issues were all psychological and the drugs and drink were all to try and forget about them. He didn’t go down without a fight though and it took quite a bit of time and patience to get through to the stubborn teenager. He wound up on some outpatient programme where he spent a few hours a week at a clinic talking to a therapist and taking anger management classes. Whenever he wasn’t at the clinic he had “tasks” to do at home, most of which involved talking to his family, helping out with chores and finding a way to pay back everyone he had upset over the years; teachers, neighbours, other local residents…
There was no way he could graduate on time and with grades to get him anywhere and for a while he considered dropping out entirely and just forgetting about schooling; not everyone needed it. He was early for his session with his anger management coach one afternoon and joined a few kids at the park across the way. They were playing basketball. His coach watched him for a little bit, impressed with Flynn and surprised he had never mentioned the sport before. Flynn had only ever had it as a hobby though. It was a way of passing time down in the park when he was cutting class or avoiding going home. His coach and therapist talked to him about it, and planted the idea in his head that maybe sports would be a good way to go for him. It would give him something positive to channel his aggression into and it might open more doors for him than simply dropping out with nothing to show for it.
He ended up completing some online courses as well as finishing off some of his high school credits at school over the summer months. It wasn’t fun and it certainly hadn’t been what anyone had thought he would do, but suddenly basketball and sports in general seemed like a good idea. It was something he was good at, something Matthew didn’t do and something that he enjoyed and rarely felt himself getting angry about. Once he had everything he needed to apply to college, his outpatient team sat him down again to talk with him. By this point, Flynn was nineteen and while he had made excellent progress within the programme, they all felt there was still something holding him back; his resentment for his family. Flynn had learnt to tolerate them, but there was no loving bond there. They all felt that the final step for Flynn would be to move out of the family home and away from Scottsdale, at least for college.
They didn’t quite mean New York City, but it was the one place that Flynn was excited about and after showing up to one of his sessions with the college acceptance letter and details about the course he wanted to take, he went one step further and surprised his therapist. He had also taken the liberty to find the closest programme available to the one he was already on. His visits would drop to bi-monthly instead of once a week, but he felt confident that he could handle the rest and there were contact details for any “emergencies”. He even showed him housing plans, job listings and local amateur basketball teams, just in case he didn’t make NYU’s team. It was hard to believe that this was the same kid who a year and a half ago would rock up to a session with a cigarette hanging from his lips and a twitch from needing a stronger fix. Flynn had made a complete turnaround, but everyone knew this move would not be the easiest thing if he pulled it off. Some people questioned how a bad kid could do a complete one-eighty on his life, but Flynn loved basketball and the thought of making something out of that love and calling it a life seemed to motivate him to keep away from his old “friends” and at least make an effort.
However, Flynn liked to do the things people said he couldn’t do. Once his parents expressed their dislike of his idea, it fuelled him more and soon he was in NYC, meeting his new anger management team who told him straight away that within a year they never wanted to see him again. He liked their positive attitude and soon found himself lost on a college campus; something he never thought possible while he was sober. He did make the NYU basketball cut, barely, but he worked hard and trained harder to prove that the place on the team was his. There were a few slip ups along the way, disagreements in bars or times when college just seemed like too much work, but Flynn pulled himself back up before he fell deeper into that darkness.
Freshman year was over before he knew it and while he might not be the perfect kid in NYC, he was definitely trying to make this new life of his stick. He spent the summer working at Tribeca and took only a week to visit home, which was about five days too long in his opinion. He still felt like there were issues there, but all the therapy in the world probably wouldn’t help him move on from that. He’s never going to get everything right and he’s still fighting that temper of his from time to time, but he’s got his finger crossed that this could be the start of a better future.
