MAI DALIA DE VRIES
FULL NAME: Mai Dalia De Vries
NICKNAMES: None really, but she's happy to let someone make them up.
AGE: twenty-one.
GENDER: Female.
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Student.
GRADE: Junior.
MAJOR: Genetics.
JOB OCCUPATION: The Lounge bar staff
HAIR: Naturally she's a light brunette, but the truth is that Mai hasn't seen her natural hair colour since she was thirteen. Long, and usually worn in some kind of messy fashion - be it up or down – her hair is usually a talking point with people since it changes colours faster than some people change their clothes.
EYES: Blue
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: Considering things, no, she doesn't.
TATTOOS: She has eleven tattoos in total. There's a moon and star on her left ring finger, a row of five hearts on her right pinkie finger, “BOOM” on the inside of her right hand running across her fingers, a moustache on her top lip, Penny lane on her bottom lip, a symbol for life-giver on her right wrist, a key behind her ear, a diamond on the back of her neck with “pure, powerful, spontaneous and rare”, a lightning bolt on another finger, “I am, I am, I am” on her ribs in hieroglyphics, Greased Lightning on another finger, and a pagan symbol on her foot.
PIERCINGS: Her lobes three times.
PLAY-BY: Chloe Norgaard!
LIKES: gluten-free brownies, hair dye, travelling, photography, summer, cycling, mermaids, quiet nights in, menthol, strong scents of mint, fruity flavoured gum, bananas, cherries, green tea, chicken burgers, sitting on the floor, mystery games, music playing constantly, coffee shops, deep conversations, academic debates, road trips, her car, tuna salad.
DISLIKES: hospital visits, hard casts, people finding out about her illness, thunderstorms, chest infections, cold coffee, cranberry juice, football fanatics, early mornings, sleeping in too late, dry eyes, porcelain dolls, sparkling water, wasps, long flights, “my horse is bigger than your horse” scenarios, mice, pop music, animal cruelty, sticky lipgloss, complaining.
FEARS: mice, wasps, long distant flights.
SECRETS: When she was ten she was diagnosed with juvenile osteoporosis. Ever since that led to her parents and brother and sister fussing over her non-stop, she's taken to not telling people in her life now about the condition.
PERSONALITY: Despite her appearance, Mai is quite the academic over-achiever. She would enter the science fairs because it was fun, join school committees just because she could and generally puts 110% into everything she does. Mai enjoys intellectual conversations and events over parties and nightclubs, but that doesn't mean she doesn't go out on occasion. She comes across as very lively and laidback and is the type of girl who will get involved in just about anything for fun and a good cause. Mai is very rambunctious with quite the infectious personality and laugh. She paints a sunny image, but Mai does have her struggles and is the kind of girl who won't ask for help, wanting to be very independent especially if it's during a time when she's earned herself an injury or is having problems. She'd sooner deal with the problems herself than reach out to another to assist her. Many might describe Mai as a free-spirit who can be rather spontaneous. It frequently surprises people since she is such an academic and yet she's not shy of a few daring adventures or trips. She's also inherently good and is the type of girl who doesn't have time for bitching or gossiping. She's blunt enough to deal with it outright, but polite enough not to hurt anyone in the process. She's the girl who will say sorry first, but not the type to be walked all over as a doormat. Mai has ways of getting back at people and it's in that nice somewhat conniving little way that she can get away with it. She's not got any sort of a temper, whatsoever, and is usually the one picking up the pieces after a fight breaks out, or telling someone that they should leave. Love isn't exactly her strong suit, but she likes her men ambitious and full of life, so they're able to keep up with her. She's unconventional in how she likes to date, but can be impatient when it comes to giving a relationship a chance. Mai just doesn't want to waste a good portion of her life on something that keeps fizzling out every time there's a spark.

HISTORY: Ida and Josef met on holiday, believe it or not. Their summer fling blossomed into something much stronger and their relationship came home with them, back to Amsterdam. Once there it didn't take all that long for Josef to get down on one knee and pop the question to Ida, who carried a surprise of her own. She had just found out she was pregnant! A whirlwind romance led to a quick, but elegant wedding ceremony and then they were finding a home and setting up a future for their children. The first was Carly; a pretty little thing who could turn heads even from the tender age of two. The middle child was a son, whom they called Martin and who was very good with a paintbrush. Finally, Mai came along and she was the little over achiever in the family from before she could even walk.
The three kids were close as could be, despite their differences in hobbies and tastes. But when Mai was still very young, doctors found out that she suffered from type 1 diabetes. It made life difficult at first, but it was something that soon became second nature to her. Life carried on and Mai was a happy little girl. It was only in her tenth year that doctors grew concerned. She had a few too many problems with pain and broken bones in too short a space of time. Tests revealed that Mai had juvenile osteoporosis. It was a secondary trigger from her diabetes and it was not something that made her life any easier. She had to live her life a whole different way, which was annoying since her diabetes already meant that she did.
Her family did everything but wrap her in bubble wrap, although she was certain that they would if they thought they could hold her still for long enough without resulting in more injuries for the young girl. Josef and Ida were quite relaxed parents, as far as parent could go. With Mai they let her dye her hair funky colours and invest time in extra hobbies. Mai was the type of girl who wouldn't accept less than an A in school and who wouldn't let anyone slack off and produce something sloppy for an event or project. Since she was hardly the ideal candidate to try and fill a sports cabinet with trophies, she instead stuck to the physiotherapy doctors demanded from her, cycling, and science fairs and exhibitions.
It was obvious from a very young age that Mai would be the one to go all the way through the schooling options and when she told them about her dreams to do as much, her parents and siblings just said “told you so” to each other and then encouraged Mai to follow through with it. They knew she could do it so long as the teenage years didn't whisk her off through some rebellious period.
As a teenager, Mai was known for her bright hair, unique fashion sense and her grades. Kids in school knew that she never made less than an A since she didn't ever slack off. Everything in Mai's life was approached with gusto and enthusiasm, and it paid off in the long run. When it came to choosing where to apply to for university, Mai was spoilt for choice. There was one thing she knew though, and knew it completely. As much as she loved Amsterdam and being near her family, she wanted out from the cotton wool padded world they liked to put her in. Mai wanted to see the world, and without being treated like a padded cell was the only safe place for her. She was eighteen, knew how to take care of her conditions, understood what made them better and what made them worse, and now she just wanted to prove that to her family by going somewhere out of their immediate reach.
She wanted to be able to travel as much as she could while attending school, which is what took her interest to America. She wound up looking at schools all over the country, but it was the genetics programme in New York that really lured her in. Mai had wanted to continue with her passion for the sciences but try to branch off into a new area entirely and genetics seemed like a game she wanted to play. Once everything was arranged and accepted and ready, Mai left Amsterdam for New York City.
It's a city she now loves, considers her second home and is still surprised by. She's made it through to her junior year without too many health problems, but likes to keep her osteoporosis a secret, since she doesn't want the cotton wool treatment that she had back home. All Mai really wants to do is live her life and have fun doing it!
