FEARS: Her dad getting shot, getting attacked again, tornadoes.
SECRETS: She's deaf in her right ear and has only 10% vision in her right eye as a result of the attack when she was seventeen. She also has no memories prior to her tenth birthday. She never speaks about the attack unless it's absolutely necessary and tries to act like there is nothing different about her life.
PERSONALITY: Rowan appears as a quiet young woman who very much keeps to herself. She's jumpy around strangers and in public, often coming across as very nervous. She's more than that though, and Rowan is quite the dreamer when it comes to imagining a part of her life when they won't dominate her. She's strong, but rather emotional although she channels all of her emotions into sketches in her free time. She's timid, but if push came to shove then Rowan could do what was necessary to protect the people she cares about. She's calm and likes to try and keep her life along the same lines; she's survived enough drama that she doesn't ever want more. She's a daddy's girl, often calling him whenever her day is done. Family is a big deal to Rowan and she keeps the people she cares about close in her life. She's caring and the type of girl who will do what she can to help out others. She's also very stubborn and opinionated which means that it's near impossible to get her to step away from her usual routine or thoughts and it's even harder to get Rowan out of her comfort zone. She can be pretty impatient which is slightly funny to her family since she shouts at others to be patient most of the time. She's no good in a crisis, usually crumbling into a panic unless she feels like there is no one else to step up and take charge. Naturally, she's not a born leader. Fighting isn't really her style and while she can handle herself IF she must, Rowan is more likely to cry and run away when confronted or caught up in a violent scene. Rowan is very unsure about love, but if someone can get through her walls then she's the kind of girl who will fall very fast. She's never been the kind for flings or one night stands and so Rowan is old fashioned in the way of love; she likes to be wooed and is into the traditional style of dating, falling in love and having a happy ending somewhere down the line.
MOTHER: Ava Jane Farley, 46.
FATHER: Rick Arnold Farley, 51.
SIBLINGS: Rick Joshua Farley (RJ), 24.
OTHERS: Damon Hugh Farley, 25, cousin.
PETS: Jasper, a springer spaniel of 3.
HOMETOWN: Harlan County, Kentucky.
HISTORY: Ava had always been attracted to men who had a taste for danger. In high school she fell in with some rough guys who were the last thing any woman needed in life. It was only when she was nineteen did her path begin crossing with Rick's. He was new with the US Marshal's office and arrested her boyfriend at first, but then he kept coming around for more answers and she kept popping up at other scenes. One night he knocked on her door again and she thought he was there to ask her about some other criminal. Ava didn't give him a chance to speak before she started shouting at him for bothering her time and time again. It was only after she finished that he grinned and said he had come over to see if she might like to have dinner with him that Friday. From there the relationship continued, but Rick made it very clear that Ava had to keep on the right side of the law or his job would prevent them from being together. She fell head over heels for the man and did exactly as he warned, but soon enough it was her with the surprise for him. Two years into their relationship, she had to sit Rick down and tell him that she was pregnant. Instantly, he did what he called “the proper thing” and married her before the baby was born.
They had a son, Rick Joshua, who would be known forever after as R.J. Two more years went by and then Ava got to break the news to Rick again that she was pregnant. This time they had a daughter with bright copper hair and striking eyes and who many commented looked like Rick's late mother who had died just a few months before Rowan was born. Rick gave Grace as Rowan's middle name in his mother's honour. From the second he held her, she had him wrapped around his finger and he was fiercely protective of her. He was protective about his whole family, but Rowan was his little girl and he made a promise to never let anything hurt her.
Her childhood was quite uneventful. She was a well behaved little girl, frequently tormented by her big brother and it wasn't long before she learnt how to get revenge on him by hiding his favourite toys or dropping something in the dirt. She ran to greet Rick every time he stepped through the door and she was completely daddy's little girl. Rowan was a happy little thing, friendly with the neighbours and the likes of the mail man. She made decent grades to get through school without major concerns, had a love for art and crafting and played in the street with her friends when she was old enough to be trusted with that. The entire Farley family could not complain about what they had because it was pretty close to perfect as things would ever get.
When Rowan was older, Rick grew more worried about his little girl. As she began to creep into her teens she was growing considerably taller than most of the girls in her class, and he noticed the boys looking at her as her body grew and changed. He had met his fair share of scum in his line of work and the last thing he wanted was for anyone like that to get their hands on Rowan. She didn't want to, but Rick made her learn how to shoot the guns he kept in the house, from his own issued weapon to the hunting rifle that he and R.J used when the season and the vacation time allowed for it. Rick never wanted Rowan to have to use a weapon outside of the range, but he would feel safer going to work if he knew she could handle herself should life ever be that cruel to her. Rowan just thought her father was overreacting to things, but Ava told her to amuse him and just go through with it. She herself could remember some of the bad apples in her youth and quite a few of those men had sons in the high school that Rowan would be attending.
Everything was fine. Rowan was a happy, semi-popular girl who did get some attention. No one dared ask her out though because they knew her dad to be a US Marshal and the threat of that shook even the most arrogant of boys to their core. Most of the rumours were blown out of proportion by the time they reached the ears of the teenagers, but they had all heard stories of the men Rick Farley had taken down over the years and the price they had paid for so much as whispering a threat to his family. None of this was every a problem for Rowan though; she was a girly girl, but she wasn't crying over being single or in a rush to find a boy to sweep her off her feet. One day she wanted that, but not when she was sixteen years of age.
A month after her seventeenth birthday, Rowan was coming home one night after a late library session. It was early winter, and she only had a thirty minute walk from the steps of the library to her house. It wasn't too cold, and she hoped the walk would clear the headache that had set in from researching her current English project. She was ten minutes into that walk, headphones in, when two guys came up behind her and hit Rowan over the head twice with a metal baseball bat. They stole everything of value from her person and then left her on the sidewalk, unconscious. She was found not too long after and was taken to hospital where a scan had led to her being prepped for surgery before her family even arrived at the ER.
The attack had left Rowan with a fractured skull and had caused a brain haemorrhage. Luckily, she made it to the hospital in enough time that her life was saved, but she was left in a coma for three weeks following the incident. Doctors didn't know how she would be when she woke up, but they reassured the family that she would begin to wake up when the drugs were decreased and the healing process was underway. In the meantime, Rick almost lost his cool. He did everything in his power to bring the two criminals to justice and in two weeks he had them in cuffs. They hadn't been too clever and a trace on Rowan's phone eventually led to them. He made sure that they were both terrified before they went to prison, even promising bullets with their names on if Rowan didn't wake up. Luckily for them, she did. However there were complications. She couldn't open her right eye and she couldn't hear on her right side. There were abnormalities with her speech too and she had trouble remembering anything.
There was a long rehabilitation period, frustrating Rowan and entirely transforming her personality. By the end of it, she was able to live her life again, but her right eye only had 10% vision in it and her hearing never returned like the doctors had been hoping it would. She was also left with no memories of her childhood and only snippets of things afterwards. Rowan was left terrified to go out at night and even during the day she would only go places if people were there to accompany her. R.J had to start driving her around, walking her from place to place until tiny bits of her confidence came back to her. There was no way that Rowan would ever be the same girl she had been before the mugging; a thought that often brought her to tears.
She was late finishing high school and then she stayed at home for another year, too scared to do anything else. Rick worried about her, afraid she would never achieve any of the dreams she had once talked about. His brother had a son in New York City and after a few chats over beer and some promises made, Rick received a call from his nephew. Damon offered to take care of Rowan if she came to New York. Rick hadn't been too sure of his brother's idea, but Rowan had once thrived under having no other choice and he thought it might be an instinct that worked now. In Lexington she was safe at home, but if she moved to a place where mommy and daddy weren't a call away for help then maybe she would stop using them as crutches so much and begin to rebuild her life. Rick was not at all keen on the idea, but he ran it by Rowan anyway. At first she had been adamant and said no to it all, but after seeing her friends at their colleges, living away from home and having fun again, she felt like she was missing out. She looked at NYU's courses and fussed over them. Her grades were acceptable for college, but she didn't want to push herself too much or pick something that would make her ill or stressed. In the end, her love for art won out and she applied for a Fine Arts course.
Only when she received her acceptance letter did she tell Rick about her change of heart. He still wasn't sure, but he didn't want to have his daughter scared for the rest of her life. He drove her to the city himself, making a fun trip out of it for the pair of them. When it came to handing her over to Damon, his overprotective streak came out again and he warned his nephew about what would become of him if anything happened to Rowan. Damon promised to take care of her and he did. He took her around the city, made her feel at home and let her go crazy in decorating her bedroom. He had been close to her and R.J when they were all kids and he wanted that girl back again. He wouldn't be at her side in class or around the campus, but he would be there to drive her around, talk to and generally annoy should she feel the need. Rowan welcomed it, but New York was one hell of a scary place and she still finds herself awake at night wondering if she even made the right choice.
