LUCIEN CARLISLE PENDRY
FULL NAME: Lucien Carlisle Pendry.
NICKNAMES: Luc, Lucy (He doesn't approve of Lucy!)
AGE: twenty-seven
SEXUALITY: bisexual
STATUS: single
GROUP: citizen
GRADE: N/A
MAJOR: N/A
JOB OCCUPATION: Creative Writing Professor!
HAIR: Brown and thick. Lucien tends to grow it out quite long before cutting it shorter again. He always keeps it on the longer side of short, though; he likes to have something to run his fingers through.
EYES: Brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: He has one on the inside of his right wrist. It’s a burn scar from a cooking accident when he was younger and he never took the care to allow it to heal properly. Normally people don’t see it because of his watch/bracelets.
TATTOOS: He has a Celtic cross on his left shoulder-blade.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Ben Barnes!
LIKES: The power of imagination, long walks, teaching, helping his students, writing, hairspray, people watching, snow, costume parties, reading new books, rock climbing, nightclubs, creativity, the subway, theatre productions, real conversations (not shorthand text nonsense), winter, street performers, driving, morning showers, medieval re-enactments, roses, daydreaming, watches, unpredictability, a good plot twist, neckties, daring women, knitwear, theology, change in the world, scrambler bikes.
DISLIKES: predictability, closed minded people, his epilepsy, warm beer, being too warm, text speak, social networking sites, “plain” coffee, cats (they make him sneeze), rudeness, feeling lethargic, writer’s block, reluctant students, ruined books, angry debates, bad movie adaptions, judgemental people, chocolate pop tarts, defeat, basketball, unimaginative people, pecan pie, guns, hospitals, cynicism, bad phone connections, deadlines, editorial emails, being injured, mouse traps.
FEARS: falling out of love with writing, china dolls, choking.
SECRETS: Everyone who has an impact on Lucien’s life ends up in one of his novels. However, he makes the characterisation subtle enough to avoid it screaming out from the pages. He doesn’t tell people they make an appearance and not all of them have flattering features, but most of his ideas for his work come from a distorted reality. Also, aside from his students if they ask, he doesn’t really mention his published work to strangers. If they find it, they find it, but he’s quite shy and modest about what he’s done.
PERSONALITY: Lucien, above all things, is imaginative. He’s quite the daydreamer and often spends most of his waking hours lost in his own little world. He loves to teach and always has the time for his students, even extending his office hours or meeting with them outside of the campus if it’s easier to be helpful. He’s a passionate man who very rarely holds that side of his personality back; it shows up in the classroom and when he’s just around friends. Laidback and eternally casual about everything, he’s not someone who is easily offended or hurt. Luc is a peaceful guy who doesn’t have the time for real life violence or fighting. He’s a firm believer that if there isn’t anything nice to say then you should probably just keep your mouth shut. He’s fair and honest and will tell his students the truth about their work and tell someone his honest opinion if they ask for it. He’s a wordsmith and can be quite charming, but this strength shows more through his writing than in his speech. He’s modest and never been one to flaunt his accomplishments, even if he’s achieved more than he thought he would by his age. Lucien is romantic and when he’s dating someone they pretty much always get his full attention. In that sense, he can seem quite attached and some might call him clingy, but Lucien just likes to express his feelings strongly and often. He likes to live his life at a slower pace so that he can take everything in and appreciate the things around him. Lucien hates lives wasted on cell phones and tablet devices and can’t understand how people can rush through their days with these things providing the answer to everything and all the entertainment they could need. He’s much more likely to put his phone on silent and go to the theatre or read a book than blog about his workout at the gym!

HISTORY: Lucien was the middle child born into the Pendry family. Daniel and Eliza were a young couple who met during a time when neither of them had a booming future ahead for either of them. Daniel worked in a local factory doing menial tasks that would, one day, be done by another machine and Eliza was a local girl in the village of Llandrindod Wells who worked in the flower shop. Daniel didn’t have a lot to offer her, but after three years of saving and making cheap dates into memories they could both be proud of, Daniel dropped to bended knee and popped the question that started the Pendry family that the village came to know.
Alastair loved playing the older and condescending brother when they were kids. Everything he did was better than whatever Lucien did and if Lucien came up with an idea then Alastair would take the credit for it as soon as he had the chance. As kids, they were typical brothers who “hated” each other, but thankfully that faded as the years went by and Katarina completed the Pendry set. Each child had their talents and for Lucien it was his imagination. Ask him why he was late coming in for his tea and he could reel off a tale about a dragon and monsters and turn a simple “I fell over” into an epic encounter that often had Eliza laughing and Daniel looking a combination of confused and impressed at his second son.
Lucien was seven when he was diagnosed with epilepsy. He had collapsed in his maths class and had a seizure, prompting the school to call for an ambulance and his parents. He had to stay in the hospital for a few days while the tests were carried out and suffered more in the time he was there, which eventually led to his diagnosis. The doctors placed him anti-convulsant medication and he was sent home and his parents told to keep a close eye on him. Back at school, it took the children a little bit more time to understand the idea; seeing Lucien fit like that had scared many of them and it was hard for seven year olds to comprehend the inner workings of the complicated human body. Soon, things were relatively normal again for Lucien and he just had to avoid the situations that triggered his epilepsy, like stressful situations and staying up through the night when he had an early start to the next day.
He was an average student in school with decent friends, but who often found himself on the receiving end of the bully’s taunts. Luc was an imaginative little boy who had fantasy worlds and loved the idea of the impossible being true. He would pretend sword fight his way through lunch and have villains and demons to slay before the school bell rang. As he got older these adventures left the playground and moved into the pages of his journal. The bullies then wanted to know what he was writing about, but Lucien, thanks to his imagination often allowing him to dream up scenarios to outwit them, could keep them at bay without causing too much harm to himself. Besides, they had other kids to pick on who didn’t look right or who didn’t come from the right places. It was cruel, but it was high school and after he had the braces removed from his teeth at fifteen, it was clear that no one cared how much time he spent writing, he was reaping the benefits of puberty and growing into his looks well.
At first he was oblivious to the comments and flirting of girls, but it was an understanding that came with time and before university rolled around he had dated, made the same fumbling mistakes that most teenagers did and had experienced his first heartbreak. As for university, Lucien attended the University of Leeds and studied Creative Writing and English Literature. His double degree was earned in the typical three years and then he took another year to earn a Master’s in Creative Writing. He knew that he wanted to teach, but high school teaching just wasn’t going to cut it when he couldn’t dedicate all of his time to the art of writing. He might have the double Bachelor’s but it was more for the benefit of it being better on a job application than just stating where his true passion was. His time at university was that of a typical student’s although he had to take it easier at times because of his epilepsy. He found who he wanted to be and somehow that journey took him to New York. Lucien needed away from the sleepy villages and towns and wanted to see some bright lights for once.
At first, he worked in a coffee shop just serving customers and spending his evening s writing a novel that had grown from an idea he had been toying with since he was sixteen. Figuring that he had nothing to lose, he submitted it to a number of publishing companies once it was complete and was pleasantly surprised when one finally contacted him with a deal. He figured it would have just been rejection letters, but someone liked what they saw and while it was nowhere near being a best seller in the charts, his book found a home on the shelves of the stores. He began working on a follow up novel and decided to look to see if he could find work elsewhere. He ended up back on a university campus working, at first, as an assistant to another member of the staff who taught Creative Writing. It was only after Lucien covered one of his classes one day when he was running late that his potential was found. It was a slow transition and at first Lucien just took a class or two a week from his boss and offered the students help outside of the classroom, but at the end of that semester, Lucien was offered an actual teaching position at the university. He accepted without hesitation, knowing that this was where he wanted to be and exactly what he wanted to do.
The summer he spent putting the finishing touches to the sequel and then made a trip home in time for Katarina’s wedding. At twenty five, Lucien really did have no complaints in his life. He would soon be starting his dream job after slogging it for the last three years to get there, and he got to spend the summer back in Llandod with his family and getting to know his brother and sister in laws better. He played uncle to Stephen and was around just in time for Katarina to announce her own pregnancy. Eliza made it quite clear that she would like to see Luc settled and with a family soon to complete the set, but he just rolled his eyes and boarded the plane for New York, which was honestly the place he wanted to make his home.
The next two years were relatively uneventful. He taught his course at the university, met some talented writers and received a deal for two more books from his publisher. No one from Hollywood wanted to put his work on the big screen and there was still no major rise in the sales of his novels. He was a modest writer who kept at it because he enjoyed it and not because it paid the bills; he had his teaching career for that. Lucien dated, but nothing came of it, and he swapped his crumbling apartment for one a little nicer, but that was about as exciting as life became for him. Returning to Wales for the holidays kept his accent intact, but New York was where he had every intention of staying, even as he said goodbye to more graduates and waited for the freshman to stumble through the door in the autumn. Lucien is happy with his life right now and while there’s always something more to be found out in the world, he’s in no rush to get his hands on it.
