DEXTER ZACHARY NAISMITH
FULL NAME: Dexter Zachary Naismith.
NICKNAMES: Dex, DeeZee.
AGE: twenty-two
SEXUALITY: straight
STATUS: single
GROUP: student.
GRADE: junior.
MAJOR: drama & theatre.
JOB OCCUPATION: Gotham stagehand.
HAIR: Dark brown and usually worn quite long, but kept out of his face. It’s a shaggy kind of style but usually looks quite neat too. Most days he just pushes it out of his eyes in the morning and it does as it pleases.
EYES: Brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: They’re mostly from his childhood but he had a nasty looking one on his thigh from when he fell over a wall and landed in some broken glass during construction work on his house when he was thirteen.
TATTOOS: He has a tattoo on his index finger in the shape of a moustache which he got it done ‘before it was cool’. He also has an L’Cie brand from Final Fantasy XIII on his left bicep that he extends whenever he’s done something he really regrets or feels awful about. He jokes that if it ever ends up being complete then he knows he’s a monster; luckily, it’s still in the opening stages! Finally, he has a tattoo of the Heartless symbol from Kingdom Hearts on his left shoulder blade to remind himself how he should think of others and not be heartless. .
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Joey Richter!
LIKES: video games, acting, singing, summer camps, costume parties, tea, children, puppets, being on stage, vegging out, brunettes, redheads, dancing, rocking out while he cleans his apartment, the beach, going back to England, having a dirty mind (or a sexy imagination!), travelling, buses, entertaining people, big headphones, spending time with his little brother, orange soda, hats, house parties, ketchup…on everything, late night diners, comedy sketches, gymnastics, saying “so’s your mum” to everything when he’s not really paying attention, acting like an idiot with kitchen appliances, moustaches, dinosaurs, windsurfing, bananas, roller skating, Disney’s Tangled (He likes to pretend to be Flynn Rider), guitar, keyboard.
DISLIKES: bullies, his little brother being upset, facial piercings, regrets, whiskey, losing contact with old friends, breaking his phone, spoilt girls who want everything, passing out on his couch, Pepsi, dogs that bark at him, trying to get stage make-up off, people yelling at him, people thinking that he can’t ever be serious, offensive jokes, running, people who complain about everything, the subway, warm drinking water, coffee, Barbie Dolls, strawberry milkshakes, overbearing smells, stomach ache, minimalistic fashion, being too shy to talk about his feelings at first, panicking and acting dorkier than normal, people asking why he has a crooked jaw (he doesn’t know!), dropping plates, sunburn.
FEARS: Joe’s death, rest stops in the middle of nowhere, his “brand” being complete.
SECRETS: He’s stood girls up in the recent past because he’s scared of getting hurt again. He’s had a hard time opening up and really letting someone in since his heart was broken by Amy.
PERSONAILTY: Dexter is funny in the sense that he can be pretty goofy and immature. He’s always been like that, sort of the class clown, but who was only funny to the outcast kids. For as long as he can remember, he’s been creative and wrote little plays and comedy sketches throughout his life, quickly discovering that the performing arts were his passion. He’s a generally happy kind of guy, always with a goofy grin on his face and a joke to be made about something, though he’s careful not to be offensive to anyone. If people can get past his joker exterior then they can quickly discover that he’s a good guy with a big heart who will always go out of his way to help people. He’s only human so mistakes can be made and while he has hurt people in the past he’s not too proud to apologise. Dexter is a sweetheart but it’s not always obvious and when he tries it can backfire on him a bit. He’s a friendly guy who will talk to anyone and sometimes struggles to take a hint when people don’t want to have a conversation! He has a laidback attitude to life, but he is dedicated and passionate about a number of things and feels hurt when people suggest otherwise. He can be quite a sensitive fellow, but masks his emotions well thanks to his talent for acting; if people around him are happy, he doesn’t want them to know he’s hurting. He doesn’t take the life he has for granted at all, and strives to put a smile on the faces of other people, never turning down a good time. He can be a little childish at times, and while it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, Dex never means any harm to anyone. He’s enthusiastic about everything and can be the life and soul of a party. Beneath the goofy and boyish exterior, he’s quite a deep guy but only the rare few get to see that about him. There are some parts of his life that he keeps quiet, just because he doesn’t believe they’re his to tell or he doesn’t want to boast about them, but gain his trust enough to see every angle of him and he’ll speak quite openly about it all.

HISTORY: Dexter was the second son born to Andrew and Bonnie. Andrew was a successful neurosurgeon and Bonnie had made a name for herself as a geneticist. Originally when Brian was born they lived in one of the southern cities, but after learning that Bonnie was expecting again they moved to the tiny seaside town and bought a spacious little cottage that overlooked the harbour. They felt it was much safer environment to raise their children in, especially when both of them could get held back at work for long hours.
Life was pretty average when Dex was an infant and he went through the same stages everyone went through at that age, learnt to walk, to talk, to be a pain in the ass…It was when Dex was five that his life began to change. Bonnie was pregnant again and Dex was going to be a big brother, something he was strangely looking forward to. However, there were complications this time round, despite Dex and Brian being easy pregnancies and Joe was premature and very sick. After a few weeks in neonatal, he was allowed home, but Bonnie noticed something not quite right about her youngest son at seven months and took him back to the hospital where eventually he was diagnosed with Spastic Cerebral Palsy. As he got older it meant that he’d spend the rest of his life most probably in a wheel chair with other difficulties too, but they would only become apparent as he grew older and started school.
Dexter did as much as he could to help, trying to read about the condition and asking his parents all kinds of questions until they were exhausted by their middle child. It was around this time that his mother took him to a local gym where a childish love for tumble rolls led to him taking up gymnastics as a hobby. Andrew was a bit uncertain, but it kept Dexter out of their hair for two afternoons a week and gave him something to look forward to while they focused on getting Joe settled and with the best medical care. Dex quickly discovered that he had a knack for making Joe smile though and would do all kinds to keep him grinning and laughing whenever they were together. Since he could do it to one person, he tried it on another and another and quickly found that he had quite the talent for putting on little shows and jokes that made people laugh. It might have been out of politeness since he was still under the age of ten, but he never stopped, not even when bullies came out of the woodwork in school.
Dexter wasn’t academic like his big brother Brian and spent quite a lot of time goofing off in most of his classes. He paid attention in Music, Drama and English, but the rest he didn’t care so much about and found it hard to concentrate for long periods of time since he’d just drift off into his own world. He was good at the subjects he actually liked, but he knew from a young teenager that he’d never be like his parents or older brother. In high school, he got bullied. He was a bit of a dork, totally immature and would often land himself in detention for making jokes or messing about during classes. He wasn’t lucky with the girls, or good at team sports, but he could recite the plots for video games and he had done gymnastics since he was six. There were endless jokes made and teasing, but Dexter never let it show that it bothered him. He could make people who he cared about smile and he enjoyed what he did, so why let them see that he was hurt by the boys who called him a freak?
Dexter was sixteen when Andrew was offered a great job, but the downside was that it was in Lansing, Michigan. The family packed up and moved out once the school year was finished for the boys. Brian, old enough for university, got into Michigan State to study pre-med and Dexter enrolled at high school to finish off his final years of education while Joe prepared to settle into a whole new life, but he had his big brother to keep him grinning again.
High school wasn’t so different there; there were bullies, he was still hopeless with the girls and there was this endless peer pressure that drove Dexter insane. However, Amy Potts seemingly fell in love with his English accent and found his awkwardness adorable. They dated right the way up until senior year until Amy dumped him for one of the football jocks. She said he was too immature and too much of a joker to stay with him and she didn’t want to be stuck with him. His friends later found out she also didn’t think he could do anything with his life if he took drama and theatre up at college like he had always planned on doing. Needless to say, Dex was heartbroken, but he did his best to hide behind the mask of the joker he had always played.
He didn’t go to college right away though. Bonnie was worn down from caring for Joe as his teenage years approached and the family tried to find ways to help him learn how to do things for himself. By this point, it was clear that Joe would always be confined to a wheelchair and probably always need someone to help him. So, Dexter took some time away from the life he wanted to give his mum the break she needed. He worked at a local theatre to save up some money and joined an amateur dramatics group to keep him going during the time he stayed in Michigan for. Once high school was over, the gymnastics stopped. His love for it had faded a bit and since he had no intention of doing it professionally, he left to focus more on what he did dream about doing professionally; performing. He took care of Joe and tried to help him find ways to improve his life for both his sake and their mother’s. Dexter loved spending time with them and didn’t mind at all that his college life was on hold for a little while.
It was after a comedy performance that Dex had won the lead in that his parents called him into the front room. They had been to the opening night like always and had come home before their son to discuss a few things. They told Dexter that while they appreciated the last two years that he had stayed at home for, it was time for him to go and chase his dreams. He applied for university and got accepted into a few, finally choosing to go to New York. It was a big move, one even he was unsure about at first, but he got an apartment that overlooked the harbour and while it was nothing like Shaldon, it reminded him of the summer days there. Everything seemed to be looking up for him, but the one thing he struggled to do again was date. He was over Amy, but there was still this fear of rejection holding him back and he found himself to be an ass, standing girls up at times, but even with quick apologies from him they didn’t offer him a second chance and he wasn’t the kind of guy to push his luck. Even now, he’s still ridiculously awkward at times, as goofy as ever and such a joker that you wouldn’t believe it. He’s got a good heart though and when he has the time to spare, he goes to the hospital to entertain the sick kids there, with songs or sometimes silly little performances if he can rope one or two of his friends into helping him.
