ROYCE ESTELLA LARSON
FULL NAME: Royce Estella Larson.
NICKNAMES: Roycie, but in truth it drives her crazy.
AGE: Twenty-seven
GENDER: Female.
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Assistant District Attorney.
HAIR: Blonde, straight and just by her shoulders. She keeps it tidy and professional most of the time, often wearing it down unless there’s a formal event.
EYES: Blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: She had one close to her right ear, under her hairline. It’s a tough one to see now, but it’s all that remains of a bike accident when she was much younger. Other than that she can barely remember the stories for the rest, apart from a burn on her left index finger from when she was cooking waffles one time.
TATTOOS: She has a King Protea on the very top of her left thigh. She got it done right before she left for college as a symbol of where she was from and who she was. She kind of regrets it a little bit now, but it’s fun to casually mention it in a flirty sort of way.
PIERCINGS: Ears the once.
PLAY-BY: Emily Rose!
LIKES: whiskey, going back home, calls from her brothers, shooting ranges, beach vacations, rugby games, being in a courtroom, boxing, Aikido, good wit, gingerbread lattes, fast cars, quad bikes, toffee cheesecake, chilli fries, winning, sweet treats, theme parks, hot baths, when her knowledge of languages proves useful in New York, scented hand creams, sports bars, pin ball machines.
DISLIKES: losing, waste of time theories, difficult people, losing her cool, subway rides, power cuts, people panicking, bad pick-up lines, stepping in gum, headaches, long hours in her office, gin, tiny handbags, narrow tunnels or alleys, gargoyles, her nickname, liars, late night phone calls, lemons, pine scent, getting sick, having to delay her trips home, icy sidewalks, sparkling water.
FEARS: really screwing up a case, gargoyles, cats.
SECRETS: Royce's TV is full of re-runs for Jerry Springer. It's a terrible guilty pleasure for her to watch before she falls asleep or for when she's ill.
PERSONALITY: Royce is extremely ambitious and career-driven. She’s the one who will be at the office until late at night making sure that everything is prepared for a trial and no one needs to ask her twice about putting in the long hours. However, she’s not totally married to her job and often wraps up each case with a drink at her favourite New York bar with her colleagues and friends. She’s also clever and often uses her intelligence and dry wit to make a point. She’s got a bit of a competitive streak in her and absolutely despises losing at anything. Fiercely independent, Royce won’t ask for help from anyone for anything and she’s stubborn enough that people usually have to force their help on her or find a way to sneak about so that she can’t push them away. Tough on the outside, Royce does have a rather soft centre, but tries to keep it to herself out of a slight irrational fear of people preying on her weaknesses. She’s usually got a tight grip on her temper, but when she does lose that she’s the kind to throw a drink before a punch and use words to really make someone feel terrible. Royce easily forgives and holds her hands up when she is to blame, only keeping a grudge if someone had truly betrayed her. She’s active with both boxing and Aikido keeping her active and away from the office for a few evenings in the week and she uses these activities to channel some of her pent up emotions since she’s hardly one for pouring her heart out. Royce can be flirty and knows that she knows exactly how to play that to her advantage some times, especially when it comes to annoying jerks in the city, or getting a few free drinks on a night out. However, she’s apprehensive about getting into anything serious since her last relationship ended kind of roughly and left Royce in a pretty bad place. She channelled herself into her work to move on from it, but it’s still something that bothers her.

HISTORY: Jeremy and Isla met during college, but only acknowledged their feelings for each other after graduation when both of them struggled to spend time together and realised just how much the other meant to them. When Isla was offered a low level job at the American embassy in South Africa, they eloped, calling their families after the wedding was over and then began preparing for their move to a totally new place, far away from anything they were used to. Mason was born during their second year in Cape Town and Royce followed four years afterwards. Isla’s job came with promotions that saw her handling more international affairs and situations than she had expected. With her job keeping her working long hours and on long trips back to the states sometimes, Jeremy was the one who stayed at home to take care of the children. When Isla had the time off the family took trips and did everything together to make sure that they kept the loving bond that had brought Isla and Jeremey together in the first place.
Jeremy often let Royce involve herself in the hobbies her brother had and as she got older her began to worry more about anything happening to her. His overprotective nature did lead to some head shakes from his wife, but there were still some terrible crimes in the city and he didn’t want anything to happen to either of his children. It was thought this that Royce and Mason ended up taking martial arts classes and when they grew older he taught them how to shoot the guns kept locked away in their home. Royce was one of the only teenagers in her school who had a can of mace in her bag because Jeremy slipped it in at breakfast every morning, even though she insisted she didn’t need it.
At school, Royce made decent enough grades to be in the top band of her classes, but she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life for a number of years. She had a close knit group of friends, could take care of herself and those close to her when she needed to and generally got through the years without causing a scene or going through too much of that petty drama that she had seen in TV shows and heard from her brother’s short lived “girlfriends”. Her choice to become a lawyer came after one of her classmates fell victim to a terrible crime and the suspect was able to get away with it during the trial because of a sloppy argument by the lawyer prosecuting. However her choice to leave South Africa came during her senior year and took a lot more contemplating before she finally made that decision.
It was one she talked over with her parents, seeking their advice and even asking Mason what he thought about the whole thing. They were supportive of anything she chose, but her reasons for studying and deciding to pretty much dedicate her future to America was that she wanted that chance to explore the unknown in the same way that her parents had done. The only difference was that if she went to law school in America then she would be staying there and that was a terrifying decision to make. Eventually, after leaving things until almost the last possible second, Royce made her choice and moved to New York for college, her dad coming to help her move into the dorm and stay a few weeks in the city to help Royce adjust.
Her four years of college were mainly focused on Royce spending her waking hours in class or in the libraries. She had her heart set on Harvard Law School and she was putting in all the effort she could possibly muster to make it possible to earn a place there. She worked her weekends and the odd evening in a cinema, cramming whenever they weren’t busy and occasionally let her friends drag her out for a night out in a short dress and heels that killed her feet at that age. She wasn’t used to this kind of city life, but it was something that grew on her over those four years as she settled more into the city. The years passed by and it was suddenly graduation and with it came the news that Royce had made the cut for Harvard. Overjoyed, her family flew out to celebrate and this was when Mason also surprised his sister by revealing his engagement to the girlfriend he had been with for most of her college education.
Harvard is what Royce dubbed the toughest challenge of her life. With the two trips home for Mason’s wedding and the birth of her nephew, she was still exhausted and overworked more times than she cared to think about. Hours were put in at the library and more than once she had been reduced to tears just by the stress of it all, but she persevered. Soon enough it was time for her to take the Bar exam and while her nerves almost made her sick twice the morning of it, she passed with flying colours and then managed to cross one more dream from her list when the job she applied for at the DA’s office was given to her, too.
It was in Harvard that she met Daniel Connolly. He was a graduate student when she was undergrad and they often shared a table in the library. Dates followed studying and soon enough they were in a relationship that became quite serious by the time she could boast about being a lawyer. She had never been one for fairytale dreaming, but with him her mind did occasionally slip to the thought of marriage and a future. It was only after she got her job at the DA’s office that things began to change. Determined to prove herself there she did start putting in more hours and staying late to help work on the cases she was a part of. Daniel understood all of that, being a lawyer himself and by this point working for a corporate firm in the city. As a few more months passed by though things deteriorated between them. There was an incident at first with a woman in Daniel’s office making a pass at him, but Royce let that one go. Then she missed an important dinner of Daniel’s because she got caught up looking through files in her office. Fights emerged from little things and then one day she came home to surprise him at lunch only to find that he wasn’t there and neither were his things. The next day he called by her office to give her his key to their apartment and say goodbye. She tried promises and swore to pay their relationship the attention it deserved, but Daniel was positive that she couldn’t do that. He tried not to be angry about it, but his words still cut Royce deep when he told her that it was over and that until she could put her career second there would never be a chance for her and love.
After that, Royce buried herself in her job and her position within the city. For a brief while the office was practically her home and the job her life, until a colleague told her to get a dog. It was meant as a light joke, but Royce figured he had a point. It gave her a reason to go home each evening and not camp out in her office. After that came the return of the old boxing and Aikido classes she had given up when she first moved to New York. Little things, but they routinely kept her away from work and gave her the break she needed. Now, she’s doing her job well, pacing the courtrooms professionally and making her mark in New York as a reputable lawyer. There is still room for time away from the case files and the trials, but for now this is Royce’s life, with the twice yearly trip back to Cape Town to visit her family!
