PERSONAILTY: Tennessee Cooper is a no nonsense kind of girl. She’s blunt and honest and wastes no time in getting to the point she’s trying to make. Coop can be impulsive, acting solely in the moment rather than believing in any forward planning. She also has a sharp tongue and a sarcastic vibe that shines through regularly for her. She’s a clever girl who does take school seriously, despite how much time she doesn’t seem to spend there. Coop is a realist who doesn’t believe in those fairytale romances like other girls, though she does secretly want someone to prove her wrong on that front one day. Coop is strong and independent with quite a competitive streak in her system thanks to her brother and the antics they got up to growing up. She can be loyal to those who she calls friends, but cross her and she can be quite vindictive. She’s no stranger to enemies or fighting and has a mean right hook that she keeps hidden, though often she has a battle of the wits rather than a physical confrontation with someone. Coop can be quite defensive and protective at times, depending on how close to home a matter is touching and if someone starts asking her too many questions she’ll get angry and usually storm off after a verbal mouthful. She’s a rebel usually doing everything she shouldn’t do, and then getting away with it with a flash of a smile. She can be short-tempered and doesn’t have any time for people who beat around the bush. Coop would rather spend her time with friends, having fun and getting up to mischief but when she’s alone she often finds herself writing to get out the emotions she bottles up all the time. She’s confident and usually struggles to know when to back down thanks to her stubborn trait. Cooper is most definitely a tomboy despite what her appearance may suggest from time to time; she’d much rather be climbing trees, playing lacrosse and hiking through caves than doing her hair and fussing about over how she looks and the cute boy in the class.

HISTORY: Annabelle was very much the spoilt little rich girl who wanted to work for nothing. She went travelling across America, chasing improbable dreams and along the way wound up pregnant with twins. She was a bit flaky, convinced that she could marry a musician and just travel the world for the rest of her life with him by her side. She had never wanted children, yet found herself with two and parents who refused to let her walk away from them. She named Cooper after the place she met the man who fathered her kids, though he didn’t know anything about them since he had been an aspiring musician simply passing through the state. Vaughn’s name came from the town in New Mexico where she discovered she was pregnant. She thought it was “cool and hip” to name her children after those places, despite her parents trying to argue for more conventional names. The twins were born in Alderley Edge in the family home, with Cooper coming twenty minutes before her twin brother, but Annabelle had very little interest in her children. She would vanish for days at a time and wind up in one of the cities, drinking with friends and guys who she thought could give her the travelling life she still foolishly dreamt of.
Luckily for Cooper and Vaughn, they had their grandparents around to take care of them. Jess and Harry thought that they had done something terribly wrong with their only daughter for her to end up being so selfish and careless. She didn’t seem to care about her children or develop that maternal bond Jess had hoped would help Annabelle grow up and face her responsibilities. Eventually, the grandparents became the primary carers for the two infants and saw it as a second chance to get things right.
It was a little confusing, but Ten and Vaughn had a good childhood, though they did ask hundreds of questions about their mystery father and the mother who would drop by to take her kids on days out and then vanish again, returning with a different hair colour or fashion sense. Coop learnt how to ride horses from a young age and living in the country with a large hiking range nearby meant that the country and the things it had to offer were her life. She would hike with her brother and grandfather and spend time riding through the fields when she wasn’t at school or being taken away by her eccentric mother. Coop was never a girly girl and spent most of her time outside, playing with her brother and daring him to climb trees, hop streams and do anything else that would have her grandma rolling her eyes and shaking her head, often using the full name of the young girl to scold her.
At school, early bullying meant that Coop soon adopted her last name as the name she introduced herself with. People only found out her name if teachers used it or if she trusted them enough to tell them. Really, her name started out as the reason why she resented her mother so much, but later on that only became one bullet point on a long list. The grandparents sent the twins to boarding school in the hopes of protecting them from danger and making mistakes with their lives, but as that old saying went “while the cat’s away, the mice will play.”
Cooper was always a curious girl and so pushing the boundaries and bending the rules was there from a young age. She couldn’t reject a dare or a challenge and most of the time it was little things like that which got her in trouble at school, though she quickly learnt that good grades and a ready answer was almost better than an alibi for most things. The teenage years led to Cooper sneaking out from the dorms to go shopping and sneaking in to the boy’s dorms for adventures and after hours parties. During this time she grew quite skilled at shimmying down a drainpipe and climbing down trees to avoid getting caught. She also joined the girl’s lacrosse team during high school and found the sport quite good for controlling her temper which only flared up with bitchy girls and the drop-in visits from her mother.
Annabelle seemed to treat her kids more like toys as they got older. She had an apartment in London, but the twins only visited her a few times a year and if she came to see them it was usually without notice and at the most inconvenient of times. She wanted Cooper to be more of a girl and wear nice dresses, go on dates and do more with her long blonde hair, but Cooper wanted none of it. She couldn’t understand how her mother was so unconcerned by what happened to her children and since all questions about their father seemed to be answered with a laugh and an inappropriate answer, Cooper only ever grew angrier at Annabelle for acting like she was the teenager and not her kids.
Cooper’s rebellious stage kicked in more when she was sixteen and she started dating one of the boys in the school who was a little more of a bad boy than most of them. She had her streak of cutting class, sneaking out and causing trouble, which only came to an end when Vaughn almost got expelled for covering for her one night with their year tutor. She didn't want her twin to get into trouble for her, ever, so quickly calmed herself down, though the rebel inside her remained, rearing up to cause some fun and trouble from time to time.
She had always been a writer, using it as a therapeutic technique to release the pent up emotions she kept buried deep inside. Her English teacher thought she had a real talent for creative writing and told her so at every opportunity. Cooper started writing a novel based on a darker version of the boarding school she studied at, making it out to be more of a horror than her reality. She’s not finished it yet, but keeps going back to it, using snippets of it for university even now. Cooper wound up in New York to shut her mother up. Annabelle wanted Cooper to be a fashion designer or something as exotic as that, but her grandparents told her to study something with real life applications. Eventually, she settled on Psychology, but minored in Creative Writing, keeping the minor a secret from her practical grandparents who didn’t want to see either twin stray down the wrong path. She always dreamt of being an author, but it was “impractical” to her grandparents, so it’s something she keeps to herself, hiding behind her major to keep up her studious and steady appearance. Vaughn went with her after Cooper persuaded him into it and the pair moved Stateside for their future; plus, it made it harder for Annabelle to randomly drop in on the twins and upset their plans.
During the Christmas of her freshman year, Coop returned to Alderley Edge for the holidays. She was clearing out some old things and having a curious nose around the attic when she came across a box of abandoned trinkets from Annabelle’s pre-pregnancy travels. In the box was a photograph of Annabelle and an older man, faded slightly with age, but on the back was written a date and “Ernie, Nashville”. It didn’t take her much thinking to work out who he was and for the rest of her freshman year the thoughts bothered her. Coop had never thought about her dad before; it was just one of those things she shrugged off and tried to forget about since she thought there was nothing she could about the mystery. Now though, she had a name and a photograph.
She ended up taking a gap year out of her studies, siting personal problems to the university, but telling everyone else that she wanted to travel, which she did. Cooper crossed America and met some new friends, sending postcards and small gifts back to England and to New York along the way. She could see the appeal of travelling and the open road, understanding somewhat why her mother craved that freedom. Cooper still didn’t forgive her for the way she abandoned them and then swanned back in whenever it suited her. When she reached the point where she started to doubt if she’d return to New York, she reminded herself of what it was she had left the city to do and put herself back on that track. It eventually culminated in her stepping foot in her namesake state to do what she left university to do. It wasn’t easy and she met some rude people who brushed her aside and thought she was crazy, but eventually the owner of a small bakery recognised the man in the photograph and provided Cooper with an address and phone number. The young girl found herself outside of the house, but she couldn’t bring herself to step out of the car, eventually turning her car around and driving back to New York, disappointed in herself but scared of what might have happened had she knocked on the door. She did enjoy her travels, returning to the Big Apple with a haircut, a new tattoo on her back and slightly changed personality which was more curious and outdoorsy than she had been earlier.
Back in New York now, Coop is ready to get back into school once the summer is over, currently spending her days working, writing and catching up with her friends. She still hasn’t told anyone, not even Vaughn, about her dad discovery and she still doesn’t know what to do about it. All she knows is that she needs answers from somewhere eventually and she needs to prove to herself that she’s nothing like Annabelle before she can settle down with her life.
