Lilith was starting to think she spent too much time on campus. Her feet moved without much thought, and she found herself either at the library, the engineering labs, or her place of work almost without realising where she was going or the path she was taking. She wasn’t usually one for getting caught up in her own thoughts or daydreams when she was at college, but lately her mind had been wandering a little more than usual. It wasn’t like there was something bothering her, or a reason for her thoughts to stray; it was just happening. Maybe it was a way to disassociate from the constant stream of “what will you do after graduation?” questions that seemed to be coming her way more and more lately. Lilith had no idea. Not one. She knew her future was in engineering, but with so many options coupled with so many poor entry level openings, she wasn’t sure if she should stick to her education despite feeling the need to break free from it all.
She stayed in the labs to work on a project after her morning class had finished. Lilith was working in the afternoon at Java Hut, but until the time came for her to switch her safety glasses for her apron, she had the time to spare for her assignments. She preferred working in the labs anyway; there were more tools she could utilise, more space to spread out in, and usually she wasn’t disturbed when she was in there. With a slow morning, Lilith managed to get a fair bit of the work done, coupled with a short break to read a new chapter of a textbook that was finally applicable to her studies. She liked pushing herself, challenging herself with something more than what the rest of the class was doing. If it didn’t work it was usually easy enough to revert to a simplistic method, but Lilith enjoyed putting in the hard work to try and learn something new – especially since her course was very hands on.
Her alarm began to chime, signalling the end of her time in the lab. It was just as she was settling in to a new testing phase to make sure everything was as it should be, too. Huffing, she packed away her things, double checking that her assignment was safe in the store at the back of the lab that was reserved for her class. Lilith was contemplating coming back after her shift at work, but that small voice reminded her that she needed to do something else, perhaps something social before she met her book club at eight that night. She packed away the rest of her things and left the lab, opening Spotify on her phone as she fussed with the tangled cords of her headphones. Too focused on the wired knot in her left hand and the playlist options in her right, she didn’t notice the guy coming around the corner until it was too late. Her shoulder collided with his, and her phone somersaulted through the air. By some miracle she managed to catch it, and instinctively reached out for something else falling, too, fumbling it between her fingers before bracing it against her leg. “Whoa. You okay? I think this is yours.” She held the pen out, falling back against the hallway wall as she wrapped her head around the moment of chaos that had caught her unaware.
