DISLIKES: Argumentative people, horses, mango juice, getting the flu (he’s prone to it), skipping a workout, running late, unorganised notes, chewing gum, strong floral scents, Facebook, black coffee, throwing things out if it could be reused, paper straws (he carries metal ones), peppercorn sauce, seeing roadkill, when his water bottle ends up warm.
FEARS: Horses, sleeping in total darkness, the idea of aliens invading earth.
SECRETS: His family was attacked by a paranoid schizophrenic who was off his meds. No one died – thankfully – but everyone ended up with scars and injuries that made it impossible for Ewan to sleep in the dark – the shadows move, y’know? .
PERSONALITY: Ewan has always been passionate and enthusiastic about anything and everything that catches his interest. For the things he’s not all that interested in he can come across as only half listening. He’s known for being a dreamer, sometimes thinking up the wildest things that seem so out of reach, but Ewan is hardworking and has the drive to make them his reality. He’s proud of his family tree, of the history that have (both the good and the bad), but sometimes that comes off as a little egomaniacal even though he’s far from it. Smart, with a brain for logic and reasoning, he’s usually quick to come up with a plan or solution to a problem brought to his attention. Ewan is a kind friend, but he’s also quick to block out those “friends” who only think for themselves and who are quick to upset or hurt anyone else. He’s stubborn, and definitely not the type to quit or back down from something he truly believes in. He’s not much of an instigator when it comes to fights and confrontation, but Ewan is a protector and he’ll defend those around him until the very end if he must. Love isn’t his area of expertise, and those who know him will know that he can be a little oblivious or slow to catch on when someone is flirting with him (unless it’s blunt and so obvious it probably should be said/done in public), but he does have a sweet side that can appear when he does catch a hint. He’s more interested in a real relationship than something with no strings, but that’s not to say he hasn’t woken up in a stranger’s bed before now.

HISTORY: Annabelle and Ethan grew up next door to each other, and both of their families were Texan blood, with treelines dating further back than the civil war. For most of their childhood they tormented each other, but as they got older that torment became teasing which became flirting which became a lot more. They married shortly after high school, finding a fixer upper on the market shockingly low. Ethan worked in construction, so renovating a house and building extensions on the land attached was no big thing for him. His brothers helped him out and Annabelle quietly worked away on her college studies, graduating as a social worker shortly before she discovered she was pregnant with their first child.
The family grew over the years. The intention was to have three or four children, but that changed eventually. Emily was the oldest and then Isaac was born in a scorching hot summer. Ewan and Henry were the twins that shocked everyone, and at that point Annabelle thought her family was complete. Ethan worked hard to keep the house growing, to make it a place in which they could raise a family. He added more bedrooms and an extra bathroom before the kids were old enough to hate sharing their space with another sibling. Annabelle found great comfort in coming home to her family when a day had been particularly tough for her. It was on one of those tough days that Ethan was called out of work to meet her where she was. They had found a child and a baby living in squalor in a crack house someone had called anonymously in about. They were brother and sister, infants who only trusted the person who saved them; Annabelle. It was unorthodox to foster children found, but the family had space, and there was a suspicion that they may need more care than the average foster family could offer. And that was the day their family grew by two.
Ewan was ten when Leah and Cole came home. As one of the youngest he had never experienced a baby in the house and it took a short while for him and Henry to adapt. Emily was hands on, however, used to playing the big sister. Isaac accepted it, but grumbled a little more – he was always awkward as the middle child. Eventually, two years after they had fostered them, the paperwork came through and Cole and Leah were officially Adams’. The adoption was celebrated in a grand style and by that point they really felt a part of the family. Leah had a few weekly sessions with a child psychologist because she was old enough to remember some of the bad stuff, but Cole was an energetic, care-free kid. He had only been one when they were taken in by Annabelle and Ethan, so he only knew his many siblings and didn’t really understand when they celebrated the adoption.
The house grew, and eventually only Henry and Ewan shared a room – which was their choice. Their relationship was a close one, and they enjoyed doing the “twin thing” from time to time. They were both athletic and pretty popular. They played on the high school basketball team, and Henry was a talented artist whereas Ewan excelled in science. His half of the room had photos and ribbons from science fairs he had won, and he took the “geek” title as a compliment since there was nothing offensive about it; he was smart!
He was seventeen when things changed. Ethan had been working on building a final room for the house, an extra bathroom. The foundations were there, but nothing else. A local man who struggled with paranoid schizophrenia had come off his medication after his mother’s death and the noise of the construction tarpaulin at night triggered dark, angry thoughts. He broke into the home one Friday night, armed with a knife. He found Annabelle and Ethan first, and managed to stab both of them before moving through the home. Emily was awake, texting her boyfriend, and her screams woke the rest. Isaac was knocked out with a table lamp, and Henry hurried to get Cole and Leah from the house and to get help. Ewan raced to help his sister and got slashed across the arm in response. However, he did manage to get the man into a chokehold and the only injury Emily received was when he dropped the knife and it caught her leg. His parents were okay – despite being stabbed – because the wounds for Ethan were shallow, and while Annabelle required surgery the blade had missed all vital organs. The man was arrested and eventually committed. Once stabilised with the proper medication he was horrified at what he had done. The family found it in themselves to forgive him, though they didn’t exactly hope to see him again.
It was scary, even though they played their fear down. Ewan couldn’t sleep unless there was a light source in the bedroom, and Henry woke him for every unexplained noise. The rest of the family had similar problems, but most settled in time. Shadows still moved in the dark though, so Ewan always kept the TV on, or had a small light in the room.
He deferred college for a few years, travelling with Henry and some friends. They mostly road tripped around America and Canada, making the most of being young and free. Ewan always knew he would go to school though. He picked NYU after a while, sticking with the subject he was most passionate about; chemistry. He got a job in a small fresh food store and moved out of the dorms at the end of his sophomore year when he had enough saved up for a small apartment of his own. He doesn’t play on a sports team now, but he works out daily, and is always up for a game with friends.
