SECRETS: He has a strong, powerful love for 80s music, and if alone, it’s all he listens to.
PERSONALITY: Zack is the responsible friend. He’s organised and patient, which usually means he won’t abandon someone if they’re being a little stubborn about going home after a dozen tequila shots. He’s quiet, but confident, although he prefers being a listener than a talker. He’s athletic and gets grouchy if there is a day when he’s not been swimming. Zack comes across as closed off sometimes, but it’s only because he doesn’t like talking about himself or his life thus far. Despite that impression though, Zack is very family-centric, and he’s sweet enough that he’d do anything for his parents and sisters. He’s helpful and selfless worrying about himself and his needs least of all; he’s the guy who would go hungry to make sure someone else was safe and happy. He isn’t the type of guy to get angry, but will walk away from any encounter that turns nasty. He’s also serious sometimes a little too much and that makes him miss the jokes or the lighthearted flirting that might be directed his way. He’s got a good heart but romance for him is something that develops over time, and he doesn’t see the point in flings or casual encounters.MOTHER: Olive Greenfield, 48.

HISTORY: Olive and Henry were only a casual fling. They hooked up every now and then, but they had zero plans to take it further. They worked together for a while, before Henry got a more lucrative job with a private hospital. Olive was only a receptionist in the ER, but Henry had been doing his residency when they met, and when he left they pretty much ceased all contact. Their relationship had been casual, more of “scratching an itch” than anything else. Olive met Geoffrey just a few weeks later when he began working in the hospital chapel. He was the new chaplain, a surprisingly young minister who had only ever wanted to work with those sick and in their final hours.
Olive found out she was pregnant on the same day as her second date with Geoffrey. She thought it would all be over, but Geoffrey wasn’t like the other chaplains she had encountered. She joked he had “modern thinking”, but truthfully, he had been raised by a struggling single mother and had wished more people gave her a chance. He didn’t judge a book by its cover and he liked Olive; he wanted to see where the relationship could go.
Zack was born in the early autumn, and Olive and Geoffrey married at the start of the new year. He had no doubts about her and he wanted to be a proper father to Zack, since Henry had made it clear in one short phone call that he had no desire to be a father – something Olive was already expecting to hear.
Zack knew Geoffrey as his father, and the family lived in a nice suburban home with great neighbours and friends. When Olive was pregnant again a few years later they were overjoyed to expand their family. What they hadn’t counted on was their little girl not being in the best health from birth. Amy was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth and the doctor’s explained that it was from a recessive gene both Geoffrey and Olive carried. That was enough to make them stop thinking about future children, aware that Amy would need a lot of care from them over the years. However, a few years later Olive found herself pregnant again. They had a long conversation about what to do, but neither could bear the thought of an abortion. There was always going to be a chance that this child was okay. It was an easy pregnancy, with zero complications and Olive was full of hope for another healthy baby. It was only a few hours after Briana was born that they discovered she shared the same fate as Amy.
Initial advice was unwanted. Some suggested that they put Briana up for adoption, spare their family the additional stress of having two children with cystic fibrosis. Olive and Geoffrey wouldn’t hear of it. It would be hard, and there would be so many hospital trips and doctor’s appointments to keep track of, but they’d be okay.
Zack knew his sisters were sick, and he knew his parents needed to help them more than him. He did his best to be independent, to only ask questions when his sisters were asleep, or on the way to school when one of them was driving him. When he was old enough he learnt enough to help out with his sisters. Sometimes he would just clean the house, or make food for them all. It was hard, and when he was older his parents explained to him the biology behind his sisters being sick. He questioned why he was healthy when they weren’t, and even though they could have lied and told him all about the percentages and the chances of being born with CF. But they didn’t. Olive told him the truth, that his father was someone else, but his dad was Geoffrey. Zack didn’t argue with that; Geoffrey was always there for him and always would be. Some people might have rebelled, might have put up a fight, but Zack just understood it all.
Teachers at school called him mature, responsible. He had a few friends, but he wasn’t big on being the centre of attention. He kept his head down, looked out for who were his, and focused on helping his family wherever he could. The only thing he wanted for himself was to swim. His dad took him on weekends, and he joined a swim club in the town once he was a teenager. It was his one release. If he’d had a bad week he swam it out.
He always knew he wanted to study genetics. He wanted to be there helping find new treatments – maybe even cures – for genetic conditions. He loved his sisters, hated it when they were sick, and wished more than anything that he could help them. So he went to college to study just that, to do his best to make a life like theirs easier for families in the future. At NYU he also joined the swim team as a hobby and a way to make friends since none of his were with him in this new city.
A few years later and Zack is getting closer to achieving his dreams of being a geneticist. It’s hard work and he cancels more plans than he’d like to, but he won’t fuck this up. His friends understand that, too. They use him as a designated driver – at his behest – and he takes care of them like he would his family. Because they are. Just a slightly more dysfunctional one.
