PLAY-BY: Jacob Dudman!LIKES: History books, doodling, DC comic books, Iceland, seafood, rye bread, cooking Icelandic food (or trying to), snowboarding, ice skating, winter, night time, Futurama, Marvel movies & comics, horror movies, World War History, sharpies, breath mints, bananas, college, Christmastime, digital art, dark chocolate, music, infused water, knitwear, video games.
DISLIKES: DC movies, feeling too hot, wearing a tie, misplacing his glasses, skipping a page in a notebook, socks in bed, needles, compact spaces, organising his desk, early morning classes, loud music (that isn’t live!), fake eyelashes, warm nights, broccoli, melon, doing laundry, McDonalds, cranberry juice, clunky jewellery, porcelain clown dolls.
FEARS: Needles, porcelain clown dolls, being alone.
SECRETS: He answers unknown numbers and talks to salesman in Icelandic, usually keeping them going until they give up on him. It’s a weird little thing he finds fun.
PERSONALITY: Ragnar comes across as a little awkward, which often is due to the language barrier. Although he speaks pretty good English he needs a moment to translate in his head and when too much is happening or it’s very loud or strong accented then he gets confused. He’s light hearted for the most part and typically tries to avoid drama or anything too serious. Artistic, Ragnar almost always has a doodle on the go, saving the better part of his talent for when he’s at home, but he’s fidgety and so always likes to have something in his hand and it’s typically a pen to draw with. He’s quiet, but only because he appreciates watching the world around him, putting his own thoughts and feelings into his art. He’s passionate about his hobbies, often consumed by them, really. Ragnar is sweet and kind; the type of guy to surrender his seat on the subway for someone else. It’s probably easy for some people to take advantage of his selflessness, but Ragnar isn’t stupid; he won’t keep company with people who treat him like a doormat. He finds it just as easy to cut people out of his life as he does to accept them in the first place. Trusting and accepting, he’s easy to befriend, though sometimes he can seem a little spacey. He’s not aggressive at all, and typically avoids any kind of confrontation – he’s master the art of slinking away. Ragnar has dabbled with love, but nothing has really gone beyond a few dates or casual flirtation. He’s young, enjoying himself, and not in a rush to find the right woman.MOTHER: Hekla Margaret Svensdottir, deceased.

HISTORY: Hekla and Hrafnkell met in school where they did date for a time, but then they “broke up” for college (which actually saw them hooking up on the weekends and pretty much still acting like the couple they used to be). After college they made it official again and got a little house to call their own. Hrafnkell was an engineer who worked primarily on road structure and bridges across the country. Hekla was an Academic Librarian who worked at the college she had graduated from. They lived together for a few years, marrying and upgrading their home before they had their son.
Ragnar was a spirited young man, a boy who rarely cried. That was probably a good thing since his parent’s relationship began to deteriorate when Ragnar was three. They stuck it out for six more years, trying therapy and family vacations to try and rekindle the romance and to stop being so angry at each other. Everything was only ever a temporary fix, and eventually the fighting would start again once Ragnar was in bed. He never seemed to notice it, since they always played happy family around him. But they divorced when Ragnar turned nine. They had shared custody of Ragnar and were cordial enough to organise it without needing a courtroom or mediators. So, the family was broken, but Ragnar still got to enjoy time with his parents – and they’d come together for Christmas and birthdays. At the end of it all, Hekla and Hrafnkell were better friends than they were romantic partners.
When Ragnar was eleven, that changed. His father lost his job but was quickly offered one by a global company that wanted to place him in America; specifically, New York. Ragnar hated his dad not being around, and he hated the missed phone calls that happened over the first year when they were all struggling with time zone differences. Hrafnkell met another woman – Vivienne – and they married when Ragnar was twelve, and a year later he was a big brother. Although Hekla dated she never married again, and unfortunately, when Ragnar was fourteen, she was diagnosed with leukaemia. At first the doctors were hopeful, but the cancer devoured her, and soon it was more about extending her life than saving it. Ragnar was with his mother until the very end, and after her funeral he was sent to live with his father, per her request. Hekla wanted Ragnar to see the world, to live his life to the fullest and she believed this was the best way to start him off.
He had always been artistic, but became more so after he made the move to New York. He had a spacious basement room, and he spent a lot of time in there, drawing and painting. It was difficult losing his mother, and suddenly he was in a strange country he’d only visited twice before and living in a home with two very young children and a step-mother who wanted to look after him, but also wanted to give him the space he needed. Vivienne was good to him. If she had concerns she spoke to his father and refused to overstep. She acknowledged that she wasn’t his mother and that he didn’t need her to be one. Ragnar honestly thinks that it helped their relationship grow to a place where family dinners weren’t awkward and where he could openly talk with her about what his life had been like before. He missed Hekla, but eventually he began coming out of his room more, spending time with this new idea of family.
By the time college rolled around, Ragnar knew it made sense to stay close to home. He still felt like a stranger, and there were times when confusion and a language barrier hindered his progress. At least in the city he would be close to two friends who were also going to college in the state, and his family who he felt he would need from time to time when things got confusing, or when he wanted just a brief taste of home. He studied animation, having fallen in love with the subject after a project in his junior year of high school. He moved into the dorms so he could taste that independence most college kids crave, but oftentimes he would do his work back at the family home in Brooklyn, enjoying the quiet and the space of his basement room; sometimes the dorms weren’t the most productive place to be after all.
