PERSONALITY: Marni is something of a firecracker. She’s fiercely independent and will never, ever in a million years ask for help. And if you try to help her out of the goodness of your own heart, expect this short-tempered girl to bite your head off for it. Marni is stubborn and will rarely admit if she’s wrong. She’s hard working and isn’t the type to slack off in class or at home or wherever she might find herself working. She’s outdoorsy and tough, not usually the type to stay down when she’s knocked down either. She’s a dreamer but she’ll never admit to it, and a bookworm when left alone long enough to enjoy a book. If you stick around long enough to be a friend, then you’ll come to see that Marni is exceptionally dry-witted and funny. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself, or anyone for that matter, and she is definitely capable of making someone feel small if they’re being ignorant or discriminatory. She’ll throw a punch if it comes down to it, and typically is the one dragged away from a situation while she’s still kicking and screaming about it. Marni has had relationships, but she’s never had love. She’s a little uneasy when it comes to flirting and there’s definitely a communication drawback she refuses to identify because she doesn’t like thinking of herself as being the problem or being difficult. She thinks she could be quite happy with the right person, but at the same time, Marni likes her space and sometimes enjoys being alone.MOTHER: Emma Shaw, 48.

HISTORY: Emma and Joseph met through friends, and quickly fell in love. They married a few years later and had their first son before that year was out. Emma worked in a pharmaceutical lab and Joseph worked in distribution for a large metalworks company. They were both hard workers who put in long hours to buy their dream home and give their family the comfort they deserved. Jacob was joined by Lucas a few years later and finally Marni.
Emma’s first two pregnancies were easy, but the third was much more complicated. At first, friends joked that it was because she was having a girl, but as the pregnancy progressed Emma knew that there was something more serious at play. Doctors put her on bed rest after she collapsed at work, and three weeks into that she felt the tell-tale signs of labour, all too soon. Marni was born at twenty-seven weeks, and spent a good chunk of time in neonatal care. Doctors tested for everything to make sure she was okay, and they were thankful that her deafness was the only thing they found in the end. Everything else had been treated with medication and hospital treatments. They did warn Emma and Joseph that there could be problems later in her life; sick more often than most kids, or developmental delays, but they were just relieved their baby was alive and as healthy as she could be.
Marni didn’t realise there was anything wrong with her. She got by with sign language and when she was six her parents took her in for cochlear implants. They fitted just one at first, hoping to let Marni adjust to sound accordingly. Like with any treatment or surgery there could be side effects and dealing with one removal would be far better than having to take two out. Hearing – once everything was adjusted – was incredible. It also meant Marni could go to a mainstream school, only requiring time off for hospital check-ups and when she was eight, the surgery to install a second implant for her other ear. This meant she could have cross-directional hearing, and a better chance of feeling just like everyone else – which was all Marni really wanted.
Her brothers were incredible. Because they were all pretty close in age range they spent a lot of time together and not once did they treat Marni different because she was deaf. Sure, there were a few times when they said she couldn’t do something because she was a girl, but their parents put a sharp end to that, reprimanding the boys for such comments. If they climbed a tree, she climbed a tree. If they wanted water guns, she had one too. Jacob and Lucas always included their sister and they were the first to stand up for her if some friend disagreed. They were a close trio, throughout their childhood and beyond their teenage years. It was them who made Marni understand that she could do anything she set her mind to.
In school there were those who tried to bully her, but Marni was always a little more hostile than they anticipated. She may have been small, sometimes sick with bad colds, but she was fierce and had no problem getting detention because she slammed someone up against their locker. She wouldn’t let anyone badmouth her, or the few close friends she kept either.
When it came to planning for the future, Marni had always known she wanted to work with animals. She envisioned herself as a veterinary nurse, but that wasn’t totally set in stone. She also knew that she wanted to get out of Texas for college. She needed to branch out, to have some freedom away from the family she loved so much. That was why she settled on New York, and NYU. With Pluto by her side she headed for the Big Apple and quickly settled into a new routine, including a part time job at Manhattan veterinary, where she tidies up the cages and the rooms, and does the basic care for the animals.
