DISLIKES: Forced religion, criminals getting free, snobby rich people, peas, apple pie, parents fighting in front of children, the media, flying, construction on weekends, getting homesick, trying to keep houseplants alive, reality TV, rollercoasters (but he’ll go on them for Mols), gin, maple syrup, Burger King, bright colours for furniture.

PERSONALITY: Bowan immediately gives off a professionally polished vibe, which couple well with his hardworking attitude. He wouldn’t have gotten to where he was without dedication either, which is something that spills over to his personal life, too. He’s a loving father who would give Molly the world in a heartbeat. Bowan is modest about his success and often charitable with his money; he wasn’t always wealthy, after all. He enjoys keeping active, since it clears his mind and helps him to think. He’s collected and calm, finishing off the c’s by also being charismatic; part of his success is his skill as a wordsmith, something that translates outside of the courtroom as being a man who can diffuse a fight or settle a heated discussion peacefully. Outside of work, Bowan is much more informal, and looks a lot less like the man who dominates a courtroom. He’s got plenty of patience, understanding things can take time. He’s kind and a great listener even if he doesn’t know someone very well. When it comes to romance, Bowan hasn’t been wholly lucky. The best thing from his relationships has been Molly, but even she knows her dad is a little wary about opening up to the right woman. He’s been lied to and hurt before, or thought he found the right person only for them to take issue with the amount of work he can bring home, or how he dedicates his time to Molly on the weekends. However, when it does come to dating and love, Bowan likes to keep things simple and sweet; picnics, late night walks…that sort of thing.

HISTORY: Benny worked as a mechanic straight out of high school, with his uncle teaching him everything he knew. That was how he met Maureen. Her brother’s car broke down and she came to the shop with him. He asked her out and she accepted. It was beginning of everything for them. They married as soon as Maureen graduated, qualified as a dental nurse. They found a small house on the edge of the city, and soon began their family.
They didn’t always have a lot. There were times when new clothes were thrifted, and some gifts had to come from pawn stores. The home they had wasn’t exactly new, or in the greatest state. Originally, the plan was probably to move out when the children were still young enough to forget it, but life didn’t work out that way. A car accident meant Benny could only work a limited number of hours long term, and at other times he couldn’t work at all. Bowan grew up learning the importance of hard work, of family, and of making the best when you don’t have much to celebrate.
He wasn’t popular, or unpopular. Bowan existed somewhere in the middle, mostly ignored by those who weren’t already his friends. Bowan knew the importance of a good education; as much as he enjoyed working on cars with his dad when he had the chance, he didn’t aspire to be a mechanic. He worked hard, put in the hours of studying, asked for help when he needed it, and got himself grades to be proud of. He didn’t care if it meant he couldn’t spend the weekend with friends at some house party everyone would regret in a decade. He wanted to have a life that he could be proud of – that his parents and sister could be proud of.
Bowan’s relationship with Norah was like most siblings. They got along well enough, at times you could think they were best friends, and other times you’d think they’d never gotten along a day in their lives. He helped her out as much as he could, wanting her to find happiness in life, too. Norah was a little less academic and a lot more sociable, so they had their differences, but Norah knew family mattered and just as he supported her she supported him.
Bowan got into college on scholarships. He knew he wanted to study law after a family on his street were murdered by a local gang who thought themselves the mafia men of the town. They were really just thugs with nothing better to do and numerous drug habits between them. Because it was so local, they all followed the news closely, watching the reports from the jail, the police, the court…everything. It was a whole mess of appeals, potentially missed evidence and a bunch of other procedural dealings that fascinated Bowan. By the time the gang was sentenced, he knew it was the career path he wanted to take, and he also knew it was going to take a hell of a lot of work.
He went to Columbia. Worked his damn ass off while cleaning shoes in a bowling alley, and working the early morning shifts at the local Starbucks. There were times when he was exhausted, running on fumes, caffeine and more energy drinks than he ever cared to count. It was hard, sometimes he wondered if it was worth all the stress and the sleepless nights, but as soon as he had that diploma in his hand and a job offer with the New York’s D.A Office, he knew that he’d do it all again.
He met Johanna when he was in college. She worked in Starbucks with him and eventually their friendship grew into a ‘no-strings-attached’ arrangement. They had nothing exclusive and there were times when Johanna would date other guys. For Bowan is was about blowing off steam. He couldn’t justify a gym membership when he was struggling to make ends meet and running in the cold wasn’t the best way to clear his head and stay healthy. He had no romantic feelings for Johanna, but she was a good friend. And then she told him she was pregnant. He was in his final year of school, applying for jobs in every free moment. He was shocked, scared, and a little part of him wasn’t sure if he was definitely the father; Johanna had dated one guy in the recent months, even if it was just two dates. Bowan still promised to be there, but he wouldn’t trap himself in a relationship where there were no true feelings shared – he couldn’t do that to himself or to Johanna.
She gave birth to a little girl, who they named Molly. Bowan felt a connection instantly, but he did a paternity test to calm his final doubts and worries. They arranged a custody set up where he would pay a small maintenance sum once he could afford it, and would take Molly on weekends. He also got to take her on vacation and see her during the holidays too. Johanna and Bowan were still friends, so they were pretty relaxed about the details. Bowan’s only stipulation was that Johanna not bring new boyfriends into Molly’s life if they weren’t going to stick around or be serious. Johanna could agree to that.
After many years of working for the D.A’s Office, proving himself time and time again, Bowan found himself sitting in that prestigious office, calling it his own. He was thirty-six then, a proud attorney, even prouder father, and still very much the family-centric individual he had been raised to be. Over the years he helped his parents re-do their home to nice standards, helped his sister with her wedding, and paid for Molly to go to a good school. His friendship with Johanna continued, and only twice did they slip back into old habits; after her mom passed away, and one New Year when every plan had fallen through. Bowan did date, but he never found anyone special who would stick around. Some were put off by the fatherhood, others didn’t like the hours he spent working, and some were just not the right fit.
Bowan has been the D.A for a year, slowly coming to grips with the plethora of responsibility that comes with the role. If he’s not in work he’s with Molly, taking her out on camping trips or joining her in the things she’s interested in. She’s the light of his life, and while he’d like romance, he’s not about to dive in blindly. Plus, he needs to find time for anything more between work, Molly, and his own wellbeing hobbies.
