PERSONALITY: First impressions of Cassie is that she is bubbly and happy-go-lucky. She does her best to look on the bright side and is either the best person to be around when you’re sad or the worst person – depending on how annoying her pep can be. If it wasn’t obvious by the likely choice of t-shirts, Cassie is also something of a nerd who spends her weekends as a Dungeon Master leading her friends through battles untold and hardships unnumbered. She also loves anime and Star Wars and will fight to the opinionated death for those loves. She’s a sweet girl, who regularly gives up her time to help out at care homes or with charities. Light-hearted, it takes a lot to bring her down, but she something does, she’s not one to wallow for too long. Cassie prefers to be hands on with her problems and will either start changing something or simply get rid of it if it’s not bringing her the vibe she wants. She’s creative with a vivid imagination which comes in handy when she’s DM-ing a campaign. There is also a spontaneous streak which often brings about last minute trips home or to the beach, or causes a burst of chaos in a gaming session – Cassie kind of adores chaos. Friendly and loyal, if you befriend Cassie then you likely have a friend for life. She’s not afraid to stand up for those she considers to be her nearest and dearest, and most of the time her friendships have formed because she stood up for a stranger. She can pack quite a punch for being such a petite girl. She’s young, and has experienced heartbreak before, but while she doesn’t mind a dance and a flirt, Cassie isn’t looking for her Prince Charming or her happily ever after just yet, though if it were to creep up on her she wouldn’t chase it away either.MOTHER: Caitlyn Harriet Little, 44.

HISTORY: Caitlyn and Brian fell in love young and married right out of college. They had Cassie fairly soon after that. Sometime between her Valentine’s Day birth and blowing the candles out on her third birthday, the marriage started to collapse and soon Caitlyn was gone. It took a while for Cassie to understand what had happened, but Brian did his best with the daughter he had been left with. Over the years they became close, a perfect father/daughter unit. They had a small home in a quiet neighbourhood, close to the school where Brian taught American History.
Cassie was still only a little girl when Hurricane Katrina tore through Louisiana and devasted their home. She remembered going to stay with her grandparents in Texas, not all that far from where Caitlyn had settled down with her new husband. Cassie only ever saw Caitlyn around the holidays, and once Natalie was born it became quite apparent that Caitlyn only wanted to focus on her new family, and not the one she had left behind. In the end all Cassie knew of her mother was that she paid maintenance each month and it went into a bank account Brian had set aside for Cassie to access when she was old enough to go to college.
When they did come back home after the hurricane, so much had been destroyed. They were put into a hotel for displaced residents and slowly picked their way through the debris of their home. What Cassie remembers most though is how the neighbourhood rallied around. They were all grieving for the homes they couldn’t get back, for the memories crushed in the storm, and yet they still managed to support each other, to make each other laugh. It was months of going back to the neighbourhood to clean it up, and yet there were times someone would play music and they’d all just stop and dance and cry and laugh. Other times someone brought lemonade and food and they just took a break to talk and support one another. It was eye opening, especially to a little girl who was only just discovering how unfair life could be.
Eventually, they had a new home, but it took years of not having much to attain it. Brian’s parents wanted him to come to Texas for good, but he considered New Orleans his home and Cassie’s home, too.
Cassie had the personality to become one of the popular crowd, but her interests pulled her towards those who had been outcasted by most of their peers. Kids were nice to her, sometimes confused as to why she’d prefer to sit in the shade and play some weird board game at lunch instead of flirting or hanging with other people who gossiped and made plans for house parties. Her father was something of an old school nerd, and he passed his love of Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons onto her. They’d spend some weekends out in the sun during the summer and others buried away with video games or movies. Her dad was her best friend and Cassie wasn’t ashamed by that.
When she was eighteen, she received a card from her half-siblings, who expressed a desire to meet with her. For a while Cassie kept the interaction to online platforms and with Brian’s blessing eventually met up with them during one of the bi-annual trips to visit her grandparents. Cassie got on okay with them, and while they did keep in touch (against Caitlyn’s desires) Cassie wasn’t ready to call them friends or consider them to be close. She figured it would come with time if they kept up the communication. It was hard to let go of the idea that Caitlyn had abandoned her for them.
It was her eighteenth year when Brian met Kristen. Cassie knew her father had dated in the past, but he never brought them home to meet her. That was how she knew this was serious. Kristen was lovely, took the time to get to know Cassie and even helped her pick out her prom dress. She had no children of her own, but she was so maternal to the girl she barely knew. She would roll her eyes whenever Brian and Cassie “geeked out”, but always took the most adorable photos of them. She was a perfect fit and Cassie told her dad not to waste time on “locking that shit down”, which made him laugh and also made him realise his daughter was no longer just the little girl who loved the Millennium Falcon and all who flew in her.
After seeing the devastation in her childhood, Cassie knew she wanted to go to school to help others. She enrolled at NYU to study social care, but wasn’t sure if she would ultimately end up working with children or vulnerable adults. She was nervous about moving away from home, but the college programme was exactly what she was looking for and she wanted to spread her wings a little bit.
College was a strange, wonderful place to Cassie. She made friends quickly and continued to star in her role as Dungeon Master on weekends with new and old friends. She had a busy social life, a busy workload, and still found time to work at The Odyssey youth centre for a few hours twice a week. She’s halfway through school now, still not totally sure where she’ll end up, but Cassie isn’t in a rush to plan out her life. She enjoys living from moment to moment, embracing her youth and all the mistakes that can be made with it.
