Ace had wanted to go to the outdoor cinema since he first heard about it. The first time, it had been a day too late. The second chance he had was ruined by the weather. There was no hope for the third since he was working that evening, and no one was able to swap shifts with him. This was his fourth chance, and after obsessively checking the website daily in the hopes that a new date would appear, he had finally lucked out. He was off the rota for work that date, he had no assignments or exams for that week, and the forecast was supposed to be dry and warm. Nothing could ruin this. However, the movie of choice was The Terminator, but Ace neither liked nor disliked that movie so he was okay with watching it. They always showed an old classic, and while the first time had been the best choice in his opinion (Reservoir Dogs), Ace wasn’t in the least bit worried about the others.
He had brought the outdoor cinema up in conversation with Roxy on the day he had been ordering the tickets for it. They had vendors on the site for snacks and drinks, but everyone was advised to bring their own chairs or a blanket to sit on. A lot of thought had gone into the set up, and there was even a VIP option for those who wanted a picnic basket prepped beforehand by the organisers, complete with champagne on ice. Had this been a special occasion, Ace would have thought it worth the money. However, he didn’t see a nice, expensive picnic as complementary to The Terminator. After the conversation with Roxy, he had booked two tickets and told her to make sure she was going to be free that night. Ace had a good number of friends in the city, but he doubted many of them wanted to sit outside and watch a movie so cheesy and outdated that they could probably only enjoy it heavily drunk.
He met Roxy on campus, once both of their classes were finished. It was early for the movie, but he had to go by his apartment to grab the blanket for the movie, along with anything else they might want. He knew they had vendors there, but he didn’t want to pay an expensive amount for snacks if he had the same things in his kitchen cupboards. He always bought too much junk food when he was racing to a deadline, something to snack on while proofreading a paragraph he could barely remember writing. He emptied his backpack of classwork and folders, filling the now empty space with two blankets, some M&Ms and Doritos. He led Roxy back out once they were done, and they began to head in the direction of the outdoor cinema, slowly saying goodbye to the noise and traffic of the city. “You wanna grab a drink after this? I don’t think it has much of a nightlife once the credits roll.”
