Fern wasn’t entirely sure she’d ever willingly step into an elevator again after the two hours she had just spent in one. She felt stiff and sore, the air in there had turned stale the longer they had been left waiting for help. Fern wanted to get as far away from the metal box as her long limbs would allow her to. Levi had been good company considering the situation. It could have been two hours of awkward silence, or filled with annoyed sighs and grumbles of someone who just wanted to complain because they thought it would make the rescue happen faster. Idle chitchat was something much more welcome. Plus, Fern wasn’t used to being able to just talk to someone without her phone exploding with drama at home, or without a sibling or mother interrupting to ask something wholly inappropriate and personal. Fern adored her family, but they were a lot, and they were far from the normal folk who settled in New York City. She was sure there were a few people who considered themselves abnormal that were put to shame by the antics in the Moranth household. Fern was pretty sure most people thought she made up the stories she told about her life, but she only wished she was exaggerating sometimes.
“I’ve never considered New York air as being fresh…until now…” Fern sighed, glancing at her new companion. She wasn’t sure if he wanted something stronger than coffee after their ordeal, but Fern was only nineteen, and there was no way she was going to deal with Coral and her mother if they knew she was drinking. For Coral it would be the biggest scandal of Fern’s life despite the older sister frequently doing so much worse. As it was, a muffin and a cup of tea sounded more than perfect to Fern. She couldn’t have gone straight back home after being stuck in the elevator; it would have driven her up the wall. Her house was loud, messy and sometimes could even be described as feral. She loved every minute of the wild adventures they all went on, but as she had gotten older there had been times when Fern really would have just appreciated the peace and quiet that didn’t exist behind their front door.
She had her little corners of escape in the city, places Fern went to quite a bit when she had college work to do. Teaposium was probably one of her favourite places when she didn’t want complete solitude. It was the sort of place the Moranth clan couldn’t possibly all fit into, so it made the perfect getaway without actually being a getaway. “So, is it just me or did that whole experience convince you to take the stairs for the rest of your life?” She asked Levi, falling in place beside him as they joined the small queue inside the quaint little tea shop. Fern could never see herself choosing a bar over a place like this, but then maybe she was just more amazed by the calming environment. She imagined a bar wouldn’t feel all that different to her homelife. The only addition would be the copious amounts of alcohol at a bar.
