It had just been a rehearsal. It had just been a rehearsal with a friend for a scene he wasn’t all that comfortable with at the time. It had just been a romantic rehearsal with a friend so that he could get more comfortable with it. It had just been a rehearsal and there was nothing more to it and he owed Lottie a cupcake or something to say thank you for giving up her afternoon to help him. That had been what was going through Dexter’s head for the better part of a week at this point. They had kissed because the script called for it. Dexter hadn’t played a romantic interest where there was more than a quick peck before. His high school had been pretty insistent on keeping the theatre kids away from anything that could cause more drama off the stage, too. Everything was tamed down with teachers explaining in repetitive detail that there was to be nothing that could embarrass parents or be too crude for younger siblings. Those who had been in the performances for a few runs were always mimicking the teachers too, knowing the speech word for the word by the time they were seniors. College was different and they wanted the full passion and intensity that the script called for. Granted, Dex wasn’t expected to do anything more than a short, affectionate kiss with someone his character was supposed to care greatly for, but it was still enough to worry about getting right.
He thought the performance had gone well, but it would be another few days before any of them received the feedback from the department. He had remembered his lines, the nerves were average when they got to the scene he had been most afraid of, but he got through it with relative ease. His biggest problem had been imagining Lottie in place of his classmate. It had been strange kissing one of his best friends, but Dex had found the memory of it slipping back to the forefront of his thoughts when he was least expecting it. He didn’t know what that meant and honestly didn’t want to think about it. Lottie was someone in the city who he could turn to for anything and he didn’t want to lose her because this one kiss – which hadn’t been in the least bit real – had made things unforgivably awkward between them.
So far, it hadn’t been too weird, but Dex had only spoken with Lottie through text messages. He had been busy with the examined performance and getting the written assignment in, and he assumed she had just as many deadlines as himself. They usually did something on the weekend, so he mentioned a late breakfast in the park before heading off to wherever took their fancy. He had grabbed a box of pastries on his way, unable to resist eating one of the pecan and maple plaits on the way. They always met at the same spot, though typically there was more of a plan arranged when they ended up in the park. Dex was just worried that everything would be incredibly awkward and they’d feel obliged to spend the day in each other’s company if they had arranged something more. At least this way one of them could claim they had other plans after lunch and make a hasty retreat if it got too uncomfortable. Or, maybe Lottie would genuinely have plans. Dex knew she enjoyed active pursuits with her brother and he was typically more capable at them than Dex would be.
