Ainsley did not expect to go alone to the movies and return home with a date pencilled in for the same time next week. She hadn’t expected to interact with anyone besides the vendor and the box office guy. She thought she’d sit on her own, eat so much food that she’d have to pop the button on her jeans for the last quarter of the movie, and then go home to tell Jade that she had missed something spectacular. Even if it wasn’t all that good, she was planning to go home and tell her sister that, just because Ainsley needed some kind of revenge for being stood up by the bookworm. She still went home and told her sister as much, but she also hinted that she had missed so much more than a great movie. Jade, however, had been unmoved by Ainsley’s mention of men which could only mean that the studying had broken her sister, or that this exam coming up was the “make it or break it” exam that Ainsley knew Jade had been dreading. It didn’t matter how many of them told her that she would ace it, Jade would study until the last possible minute.
As such, Ainsley didn’t see her sister for much of the next week. The exam was on the same day at Ainsley’s upcoming date with Toby, so Jade was ultimately going to be the last to know about it. Felix and Dougie were waiting for the aftermath of that, knowing that Ainsley would be reprimanded for hiding the juicy story from her only sister. It didn’t matter that there were four of them, that they were all the same age by minutes, but Jade made a big to do over the sisterly bond that, in actual fact, was the same for all four of them. The family had been incredibly open and sharing growing up, to the point where friends felt embarrassed for them. Ainsley had never understood why. Maybe it was different between regular siblings, but the four of them had shared rooms, food, memories and everything in between from the moment they were born.
As such, she had mentioned in casual conversation that she had a date, but it wasn’t a big deal. She barely knew Toby since both of them were enjoying the movie, and both had to leave fairly quickly afterwards. There had been time to share opinions, swap numbers, and indulge in a little excitement for what they would see next, but Ainsley wasn’t about to pin all of her hopes and dreams onto him or any other man for that matter. Toby had, however, offered to get pizza after the movie next time so she didn’t feel like she was going to explode in the theatre’s seating. Ainsley agreed that it was probably the better idea. She hadn’t exactly felt the greatest after she got home that night.
A week of texting about movies and movie trivia, and Friday was finally around again. Ainsley had been home only to change out of her tattoo clothes – older items that she cared less about – and into something comfortable. Then she was out again, letting Toby know that she was on her way and asking if he wanted anything for a snack if she got there first. Ainsley knew they were getting pizza afterwards, but she still wanted some popcorn and a soda for the movie. It wasn’t natural to go in without snacks – what were you supposed to do with your hands then? She quickly realised she didn’t want anyone to answer that question. It could be nothing she wanted to hear.
