Tansy was surprised when Jayden expressed interest in going to a convention with her. No one ever came with her. No one ever did anything with her unless they were forced to in class. She was used to it, had sort of grown comfortable with it. The friendship that Jayden offered was very much new to her. Talking to him on campus was one thing but having him say he’d love to come to a convention with her and wouldn’t mind dressing up for it was a completely different thing. At first, Tansy hadn’t known what to say to him, instead flinging herself at him for a hug that was uncharacteristic of her.
In the weeks that followed she was scared she was driving Jayden crazy with her questions. She had offered to make him a costume, but Tansy hadn’t actually made an outfit for anyone else before. She had only painted people as characters and that had only been for her college admissions portfolio. She didn’t want Jayden to trust her with this and then think he would have just been better buying some pieces and cobbling a costume together himself. She had attacked him with a tape measure one lunch time, but then later came back and asked him how he felt about body paint. Tansy felt like she could do more with body paint, at least on somebody else – and most of her past costumes had had an element of body painting.
After some careful consideration she thought she had the perfect idea for them both. It was a way she could show off her painting skills to Jayden, but also simple enough that if he wanted to clean up and go out, he could. She told him to come to her apartment in the morning, by which point she was mostly ready. She had her dress on, and an apron over it to keep any of the dark paint getting on the white material. Her paint was only small in comparison, and she could put the rest of her look together in less than an hour. She had all of her paints set up, clothes and brushes, sponges and brief sketch ups so she didn’t have to reference a laptop screen for that perfect angle and image. It was easier to do the research beforehand and chuck it all together for a final design.
When the knock came at the door, Tansy was finishing up pulling her wild hair back from her face, pinning it and twisting it with clips. Eventually, she’d have a wig on, her natural blonde mane hidden beneath a wig cap and dark, thick locks. She didn’t want to scare Jayden at the door, aware that by the time this morning was over she would already look like Carrie – despite that not being her character for the day. “Hey, um, I’ve set up in my bathroom.” She told him, stepping aside to let him in to her den of eccentricity. “Not that we have to rush or anything. Um, you want a drink? Breakfast? I have almond croissants or I could make some eggs and toast?” Tansy was currently trying to remember the last time anyone was in her apartment, but honestly, aside from the movers, she didn’t think there had been anyone.
