Cady was fortunate enough that she didn’t have a hangover when she woke up. She used to have them something awful when she was younger, but now she joked that the ocean air cleared them away as she slept. In truth, it was probably that she didn’t mix her drinks as much anymore, and that she was better at holding her liquor. Still, she poured herself a glass of orange juice and watched over Dresden as he slept, sprawled on the blankets she had in excess around her little floating home. She remembered them talking the night before about her place being mobile, and recalled Dresden being keen on a little trip today. It was early, but it was a sunny, warm day and probably the best time to head out for a few hours. She finished up her orange juice, took Prince out for a quick morning walk, and then returned quietly, changing into shorts and a vest before climbing through to where the boat’s controls were.
She didn’t get to take the boat out as much as her grandfather probably did. Mostly, she just lived on it. She had hosted a summer party for those who worked at The Double LL where they headed out for an afternoon of booze and grilled food. How she managed to get everyone back to the marina before someone fell overboard was a mystery to her, but Cady had a feeling that might have been the last time she really took the boat out. Most of the time she moved it for maintenance and to check things were all as they should be. It had been her grandfather’s and so she took better care of it than she did of most of her own things. Sliding her sunglasses from her cropped blonde hair, Cady welcomed the tint over her eyes. The morning sun was blinding and navigating the marina was sometimes as frustrating as working through New York traffic. Thankfully, this was not one of those days. She was out of her space and away from the other boats in about twenty minutes, which wasn’t bad considering she was by no means an expert at this.
Cruising out at a leisurely speed, Cady figured that when Dresden finally woke up, he could enjoy the morning sun and not have to worry about them making it out of the marina in one piece. Cady didn’t do anything exceptionally well when she had any kind of audience, so this had been the better way to start their day on the water. It hadn’t crossed her mind that he may have forgotten the drunken conversation from the night before. She hadn’t stopped to think that this may have all been a whiskey addled idea that never should have happened. She heard movement below, and Prince came jumping up the steps so she had to assume Dresden had finally moved. “Morning, sleepy head!” She called down, remaining at the wheel for a few minutes longer until they hit open waters. Only then did she chance glancing in on her barely awake companion. “Good sleep?” She asked, sitting on the steps and pulling a bottle of water out from the mini fridge at the bottom. She offered one out to Dresden, too.
