Tabitha found a sort of solace in the bakery. It was escape from the world that had once turned its back on her. She was thinking less and less about that with each passing day, but it wasn’t as though she could switch off her memories. If that was possible, she might have done it a long time ago. It certainly would have made those sleepless nights a hell of a lot easier back when her entire world had been limited to a six by eight room. At least jail was softer than prison, but it was hardly a year long vacation. It had changed Tabitha, built walls where she had never had them. She had never felt like she belonged in her family, but the barbed wire fences around the jail had shut them out for good. She hadn’t seen her brother or father in the longest time. She had left a message when she moved to New York, but no one had ever contacted her on it. The only person to give her a chance had been Felix, and she wasn’t going to do something stupid to make him regret that choice.
Tabitha worked hard, probably harder than she needed to, given that she was just a baking assistant. Most days her job was making sure the cupcakes didn’t burn and checking the party orders when Felix was in his classes. Tabitha had never been to college. Those dreams had been smothered by the felony on her record. She had wanted to be a dancer, but the closest she got to that now was the barre classes she took on Wednesday and Friday mornings. She didn’t know what else she could do with her life, so many doors had slammed shut because of one stupid, teenage mistake.
She stretched her fingers out, hearing a knuckle crack as she did so. Piping icing cramped her hand up even after she had been at the bakery long enough to know it inside and out. Pushing through for three more cupcakes and another tray was ready to go out. She picked it up, carefully balancing it on her arms before she opened the swinging door with her hip, making sure she was completely through it before letting it swing back. There had been too many cake related accidents involving that door, but Felix apparently didn’t know of a better solution than reminding people to be careful and not rush around like kids in a candy store – cakes were not candy, apparently. Nudging her way past Dax, Tabitha slipped the tray into the empty space behind the glass. She wasn’t a huge fan of the triple chocolate cupcakes, but it seemed like the rest of the city were. “Need a hand?” She asked Dax, noticing the lunch time queue growing longer. Clark looked like she was handling a birthday order that had been baked fresh first thing, and Tabitha knew Felix hated people thinking they were understaffed just because it was hectic for an hour or two. Scout was still in the kitchen, loading the next lot of cakes into the ovens, so Tabitha was more than able to hop on the counter for a little bit. “Next!” She called, wiping her hands on her icing speckled apron.
