It was ten in the morning when Xylia pulled her campervan up outside the house Fabian called home. She laid her hand on the horn for a long second and reached for her coffee. Her window was rolled down, and her phone was set up to play one of her favourite driving playlists. She had a huge coffee and a bag of snacks sitting between herself and the console. She just needed Fabian to get his mighty fine ass to her van so they could get on the road and head out of the city. They had a few hours until they hit one of her favourite spots, a little woodland camp site that very few people seemed to visit. The lack of camping traffic had made Xylia wonder if she was missing information about some brutal murder or massacre, but no Google search had confirmed those suspicions. She could only conclude there was a more popular site somewhere nearby. Xylia wasn’t to go looking for it when she was already happy with the one she favoured. She didn’t want a huge crowd or extra, unnecessary amenities. They had showers and bathrooms where they were going, and that was enough for Xylia. The whole point of camping was to be away from the usual material treats of life.
That wasn’t to say she was completely shut off once she managed to get the time to go camping. She had playlists and movies downloaded, a mini projector and the equipment to create her own little movie screen. For Xylia there was nothing better than laying in the fresh air with a movie playing as the stars twinkled high above her. Xylia had spent a lot of time and a fair amount of money on her campervan, making sure it was as cosy as it was classic. A tiny kitchenette gave way to a double bed at night. Sometimes she didn’t use the kitchen at all, instead having a campfire and roasting food over it or on a little grill she had. She had no plan for this trip, since it was the first time since high school anyone was coming with her. She enjoyed hanging out with Fabian, beyond their little bed arrangement. This was her chance to show him something she enjoyed. Horror movies and camping rarely resulted in a good combination, but Xylia didn’t exactly conform to the norm. She enjoyed the spine chill of a good horror, an evening around the trees, and a large cold beer. She had spent most of her life being the odd duck, the strange girl who liked scary things and comic books, whose father was a married man with an entirely different family. It wasn’t easy to fit in when she was the result of a scandalous affair.
Xylia leaned on the horn again, reaching over to grab the bag of mixed candies, popping a sour gummy into her mouth and sucking the sugar from it. She grinned as Fabian emerged from the house. “Bags get tossed behind the seat.” She told him, although he was more than welcome to keep it by his feet. She just didn’t think that would be so comfy after an hour or two. “You need any stops before we get out of the city?” Xylia always came prepared, so she didn’t really make any stops beyond bathroom breaks and gas refills. She wouldn’t know where the nearest superstore or half decent coffee could be found outside the city limits.
