The music was loud, and the air smelt of popcorn and corndogs. They didn’t have carnivals like this back in New Zealand. New Zealand celebrations were more about the traditions. They came with music and dance, and typically everything ended on a beach with a barbecue. They were fun, but there was none of the same carnival food, none of the same attractions. Shiloh had been lucky enough to live on three different continents, and the similarities they shared could be counted on one hand – two if she decided to be a little less concise about it. She held onto Henderson’s shirt when they were moving through the crowds, clutching at his elbow or the hemline whenever she was afraid of losing him. Shiloh was a little paranoid that if she took a wrong turn, she could find herself facing a puppet show and she didn’t want the panic attack they would induce. It had been too many years since the last marionette nightmare, and she was hoping to keep them at a distance – a very great distance.
Shiloh was glad Henderson had suggested the carnival when he noticed their days off aligned this week. She was pretty terrible about noticing what shifts everyone was working beside her own. Shiloh usually had a dozen or more things to cater for around the hours she spent in college and at work. It made her seem a little ditzy, which was something Shiloh was not. She just enjoyed keeping busy and trying all kinds of different things. It was how she had discovered so many of her hobbies and come to share them with others. Shiloh wasn’t expecting Henderson to become obsessed with motor racing, but she hoped that after their last trip out to the tracks he might be someone she could invite along again. Shiloh loved sharing her passions with others, even if they seemed out of sorts for the straight A kid that she had always been. She wasn’t sure if Henderson loved the carnival or if it was just something different that he thought they should try out. Their friendship had been growing considerably over the last few hectic months and Shiloh couldn’t say she hated that. He made her laugh, and seemed to actually listen when she started rambling on about something she loved. She was a passionate young woman, always had been, and sometimes people considered it “too much” and she had to try and tone it down so that it didn’t seem like she was trying to steal all of the attention.
Shiloh tossed a soft dog plush at Henderson after winning it at the test your strength attraction. “Told you I was She-Hulk.” She stepped around a wayward balloon seller and fell back in step at his side. “Clearing multiple tables at once had clearly paid off more than any gym membership could.” Shiloh pressed a kiss to her bicep, laughing as soon as she’d done it. She was having a lot of fun with Henderson and she was glad neither of them had to rush off for an evening shift or to study. It was a rare treasure these days. “You want some popcorn? I want some popcorn.” She tugged his sleeve again, this time to pull him in the direction of the vendor.
