Kinsey was only on the campus to have the final sign off on the work she had done with her small team. The powers that be were thrilled with the landscape makeover and hinted that they’d call upon the company again when it needed touching up. She told them she’d be happy to come back any time, and even handed over her business card with her personal contact information. Kinsey liked to maintain a job if she had been the one to do it initially. It meant she had the knowledge of what had been asked for, along with the notes of the original work. Sometimes it wasn’t as simple as planting some plants and waving goodbye. There were times when the soil wasn’t right, or the spot in development wouldn’t be good for certain species. This had been fairly straightforward since the college campus was spacious and very few of the buildings blocked out light entirely from the greenery. Everything that had been planted should at least get a few hours of sunlight, and plenty of water when it rained. The rest of the time she knew maintenance staff would handle the upkeep once she was long gone.
She was going to head straight back to her truck and head on home, when she found herself walking by the patch where she had sliced her hand open. The cut had thankfully not needed stitches and was now almost entirely healed. It had been frustrating to work with since it re-opened frequently; Kinsey was not great at keeping her hand still when she had such a physically demanding job. Nevertheless, it was a very thin slice now, the skin healing smoothly. She reckoned it wouldn’t scar for more than a few months at the very most. The light was on in the office she had disturbed, and in the same moment she noticed it, Kinsey’s plans for the rest of her day changed. She asked a passing student for directions, as she only knew the outside of the campus rather than the buildings and all that was in them, and made her way to the office door; she figured it was more polite than banging on the window again.
Knocking, she took a moment to be glad that she wasn’t dirt smeared today. Some people seemed to think she always had mud on her face or dyeing her blonde hair. As much as she was a tomboy, there were times when Kinsey liked looking clean and dressing in something other than ripped jeans and plaid shirts. Today, her shirt was around her waist, the jeans were only fashionably ripped, and her t-shirt was unusually white some something that had come from her wardrobe. She also wasn’t trailing mud from her boots, having left them in the truck and slipping on a pair of too-comfy Vans. All in all, she looked less horrific than the professor probably remembered her to be. When he opened the door, she greeted him with a smile. “Hi, I was wondering if I could buy you a drink? An apology for basically re-enacting every zombie movie ever when I bled all over your window.” She held up the offending hand as she over-dramatized what had really happened. “We officially finished work yesterday so you can grade in peace now.” They hadn’t been disruptive in the slightest since transplanting flowers was a pretty quiet job, but Kinsey knew she had personally been a distraction to Kade on what she imagined was a relatively peaceful afternoon.
