Augury knew she was so lucky to have Isaac. He had been her rock since Breckenridge and without him she didn’t want to think of who she might be or where she would have gone. He loved her and that was in spite of her past. She had been – and still was – a terrible flirt, often not even realising when her smile seemed like more than a smile. She had dated and partied and been the type of daughter no one could really be proud of. She had believed she’d marry young, be a housewife of sorts, and that her husband would boast about getting Augury to settle down with him over everyone else. Now she knew those dreams were foolish, pathetic even. Isaac took care of her, but he also helped her stand on her own two feet when the world felt like it was collapsing down around her. He was the calm in the storm, her one constant when the world had been flipped on its head. He had never judged her like her parents had done - at least not to her face anyway. She was sure he had some thoughts about the life and times in Breckenridge, where very few people had something nice to say about the outgoing redhead. Little of that girl remained now. Augury had buried her when she buried Sapphire, convinced by those around her that she was to blame for her sister’s brutal murder.
She had liked Isaac for a long time, but she wasn’t all that sure she deserved him. She had dumped her problems on him, used him as a shoulder to cry on, as an escape when their small down seemed even smaller. Sometimes she wanted to ask him why he had taken her away from all that, why he cared as much as he did when she had been made to believe she was such a horrible person. Thankfully, those thoughts only came on dark days, the ones that reminded her too much of all she had left behind. Sapphire’s anniversary wasn’t too long ago, and Augury had been forced to call in sick to both work and school for the days surrounding it. It was the first one, and it hit harder than she expected. She couldn’t sleep unless she had exhausted herself through crying. She rarely left the bedroom and when she did it was usually to curl up with Isaac. Not being able to make dinner or talk to him about normal things then made her feel worse. She didn’t think it was ever going to end, and then one morning things were just a little bit better, she felt like she could have a shower and make something to eat. The next day, the pain was a little less, too. It had taken about a week, but Augury was feeling like she was going to be okay. Sapphire, and thoughts of her, would always be hard, but she would be okay.
It was weird to think that such a dark event in her life was followed by one of the best. Augury remembered that first kiss vividly, a smile tugging at her lips as she thought back to the first time he had bought her a bouquet of Magnolias – the same as he had given her that morning alongside breakfast. Kissing him then had felt oddly like coming home after a long vacation. She hadn’t been sure coming to New York was the right choice, but tasting Isaac, grinning against his lips, it made all the pieces just fall into place. It was hard to believe it had been a year already. She didn’t know if she’d feel like celebrating after coming out of a heavy depression, but Isaac had been wonderful as always, and with a surprise date planned out, Augury realised – not for the first time – that he always knew what she needed long before she recognised it for herself. His instructions to get dressed up for a night out had left her with butterflies in her stomach. She loved surprises, and they rarely went out given that Isaac had a demanding job and now she was in college she spent so many evenings studying. She took the afternoon to pamper herself, ending with a hot bath and then she turned to getting ready. A well fitted black dress with chunky high heels, a smoky eye and scarlet lipstick, and Augury felt ready for her beau. She pinned her hair back into a bun, bangs dancing along her eyebrows as she realised it had been a good choice to get them cut in the previous week. There was a knock at the door that left Augury confused, since no one ever visited them without buzzing up first. Nevertheless, she crossed the apartment and pulled back the black door, laughing when she saw Isaac on the other side. “Roleplaying that we don’t live together?” She asked jokingly, grabbing a light shawl to work as a jacket.
