Rowan was excited to go home. She knew New York was about pushing herself, about chasing down some semblance of the dreams she had left behind after the attack. There were still parts of Harlan County that got her heart racing, that left this imprint of anxiety on the young redhead even though she remembered nothing from the attack. Hopefully she could avoid those spots and simply enjoy the time with her family. Everyone seemed to be coming home, but then it was her grandmother’s 75th birthday, and everyone loved the spirited old lady. There was nothing planned beyond a huge Farley family dinner, but everyone in the one place always promised fun. Rowan was more excited for this trip because Archer was coming with her. Her family had known something special was happening in her life from the smiles and laughter in the phone calls they shared. She also suspected Damon had told them of the man who was frequently picking her up or dropping her off. Rowan’s mom had encouraged Rowan to bring Archer along, and when she had asked her boyfriend had agreed.
To Rowan, her family was the sweetest on the planet. Even her father, the US Marshall, was a softie at heart. She never really thought about how the rest of the world might see a different side of them all. All she knew was the endless support they offered her through all of her struggles and challenges. She knew they would be for her no matter what whenever she called on them. Rowan also knew that she was incredibly lucky to have that kind of loving family; there were too many people in the world who had no one, or only a lifetime of bad memories. Rowan might have forgotten a portion of her life, but her family were more than happy to relive home movies or talk her through a photo album if she asked them to. She hadn’t really brought anyone home before, since high school had been shrouded in near tragedy and a difficult recovery. She had no clue what to expect, but she hoped they’d treat Archer well. They were protective of her, but so was he! If the girl who barely trusted anyone now could trust him, then she believed her family should as well.
The Farley family home was on the outskirts of the town, along a narrow road. In these parts it wasn’t uncommon to see scattered houses forking off from what locals referred to as a main road. They had a fair bit of land that had once been littered with children’s playsets and swings. Today, only the swing remained, the rest given away once the children had grown into adults. Damon was driving, Rowan stretched out in the backseat, enjoying the familiar view, and the sweet scent from the nearby wildflower fields. It was so good to be home.
When Damon pulled up in the driveway, Rowan was the first to jump out of the car. Her dad was stood by the front porch, looking like he had just finished a glass of her mom’s iced tea. She flung her arms around him, hugging him tight before dropping back to her feet, jogging back to the car to grab her backpack from the trunk, and then grab Archer’s hand to tug him forward. “Daddy, this is Arch--” She didn’t get the chance to finish because instead of the handshake she was expecting her father instead threw a punch right at Archer’s face, knocking her boyfriend backwards. “Daddy! What the hell are you doing?!” She pushed herself between the two men, her arms wrapping backwards to hold onto Archer. Already Rowan could feel her heart racing; she didn’t cope well with violence of any kind, not after all she had been through.
