It had been a very long week. As a detective of the Major Case Squad, Kate didn’t really have an easy day in the office, unless the day was one of monotonous paperwork. This week had been more than usual, with extortion and kidnapping threats on top of the larceny case she had been assigned to early on Monday. Kate was relieved that she wasn’t on duty this weekend, because all she wanted to do was drink, sleep and then try and remember who she was without a badge stuck to her hip. She had spent Thursday night asleep on the couch in their breakroom, only disturbed when her partner came in at 5am with coffee and fresh croissants. By close of day on Friday they had a suspect in custody, property being checked over before it was returned to its rightful owner, and what Kate hoped was a closed case. She didn’t want to start her next shift with this case anew on her desk.
Kate wasn’t a fan of drinking alone; she felt like it was a cop cliché she didn’t want to be a part of. She wasn’t aspiring to get off her face drunk, but merely needed something to take the edge off the week, to help her ease into this rare weekend away from the precinct. She was going to text one of her friends to see if she was free, but before she could pull up her name on Whatsapp, another friendly figure crossed her path on the way to the elevator. If she wasn’t already so drained she may have asked Oli for an hour on the mats, but instead she thought about spending time with him in a poorly lit bar, drinking beers and making challenges that were less about dirty fights. She wanted to spend more time with him, already aware how he riled her up when they were sparring, but it seemed like a different universe when they were tangled in one another, each scrapping for the upper hand between flirtatious quips that had yet to lead anywhere.
“Hey, Wolfe.” Kate slid into the elevator beside him, leaning back against the cool metal wall and smiling in his direction. “What’s a girl got to do to buy you a cold one?” She asked, light eyes alight with a mischief she believed he knew only too well. She was a scrappy fighter and just as bad when off the mats. If Kate wanted something she’d use all of the tricks in her arsenal to try and get it; tonight, she wanted drinks with a guy who left her wanting more every time they finished fighting. “And wings.” She added just as her stomach grumbled, snapping her thoughts away from what drinks could lead to and guiding them back towards the realm of practicality and survival. Kate wasn’t all that sure she’d eaten anything more than a handful of peanuts since that 5am croissant. “Maybe the whole bird.” She amended, wondering if Oli was as bad as she was for self-care when they were on the clock. Kate almost forgot she needed to look after herself when she was working a case, instead fuelling herself on snacks in the car and too-strong coffee.
