PERSONALITY: Perhaps not surprising, James doesn't feel comfortable when people approach him and thank him for his service. He believes it's his duty and it's his job. While James believes that there are plenty of people who should be thanked for the jobs they do, even his fellow soldiers, he doesn't particularly like it himself. His buddies joke and say he's just humble and maybe he is but he also feels there's more to it, though he can't put it into words. James is quite proud of the path he's taken and believes even if he'd started life differently, he would still be serving his country with pride. Love or romance are not things he's taken into consideration. Since he's got such a chaotic lifestyle currently, he genuinely fears to bring someone into it, introduce them to the family, fall for them or have them fall for him only to leave them because he tried to save a teammate and took the bullet himself. While he's on active duty, James likes to keep to more casual relationships though he refuses to call them one night stands. He doesn't want to be "that guy" but currently, he is. At least he can proudly say that he doesn't kiss and tell; the rest of his squad have to get their kicks from someone else.MOTHER: Helen Clary & fifty-eight.

HISTORY: Helen and Mike met at work when she was hired to be his secretary. She'd married quite young, nineteen and her husband died four years into their marriage in a horrific car accident. He'd run out to pick up their son's birthday cake for the party. The only thing she could say about that terrible day was to thank god that it hadn't actually been Christian's birthday or that he was old enough to remember it as it was his first birthday. She didn't want to have her little boy remember that day for that reason. Helen returned to school and worked her ass off to get herself a basic degree, which she then used to get herself a job as a law secretary after taking a few specialised classes. It meant that she would have the basic nine-to-five job and still be able to take care of her baby boy. She'd been hired by Mike's superiors and had not really gotten along well at first. She did her job, and did it well, without complaint but did leave at five o'clock whether or not he needed her, which irritated him. It was three years into the job that she actually missed a couple of days of work and furious with her, he showed up at her house where he found her frazzled and taking care of a five-year-old boy who was down and out with the flu.
She snapped on him and told him that shockingly, the world didn't revolve around him and if he was going to fire her, he had better take it up with the people who actually hired her because they were well aware of what they were getting when they offered her the job. She not-so-politely shut the door in his face and returned to caring for her sick child. Mike was a little easier on Helen after that and actually took the time to get to know his secretary. The first thing he'd noted was that she didn't keep any pictures of her son on her desk and she explained that she didn't want any special treatment from anyone and people knowing she had a child meant there were more leniencies and she didn't need that. She was a tough woman but she was also fair and cared. She knew more about the entire office in her three years than Mike had learnt in his eight. Eventually, though it took quite a bit of time, they grew closer and became a couple. Helen was a little wary of marrying him so their surprise son was born out of wedlock though neither of them cared. James was a sweet boy who was well cared for and wanted for nothing. Christian was a little apprehensive of his baby brother but at that point, he was twelve years old and thinking his parents were too old to have more babies. His perception of adults was quite skewed. From there, life was alright. There were too many years between Christian and James that they weren't close and Christian was off to California for University before James even really started school.
James was basically raised an only child, which really worked out well for them all. Christian came home whenever he could but for the most part, he'd created his own life in California. James grew up with incredibly strong role models in his life. His mother's brother was in the Air Force, one of his father's brothers was in the Army so there were strong men at every turn who showed him what it was to be proud and do a job not everyone understood. His school didn't have an ROTC group but it didn't matter because it wasn't really until he was a teenager that he'd really considering joining the armed forces in some capacity. It was not a difficult decision to make but it was a difficult conversation to have with his parents because they were already feeling all the highs and lows of not really knowing if this time will be the last time they see a brother ever again. He didn't want his parents to be that concerned that every time they saw him, it might be the last time because he did have a plan but he also knew that plan was going to take some time to see completion.
With that, James decided to put college on the backburner because he wanted to get his boots dirty first. He joined the navy straight out of high school, two months after his eighteenth birthday and never looked back. He rose through the ranks as quickly as had been possible for him. He was smart and clever and listened to his commanding officers. Once he rose to the rank of Corporal, he spoke to his CO about possibly returning to school and getting an education that would help him continue on in the navy. He hadn't come from a real military family so he'd known at a young age that getting into a military school was basically next to impossible. His uncles, however, were enlisted men and both had become officers over time because they'd proven themselves and worked hard at school whilst still being in their respective fields. James figured he could do the same thing. Thankfully, his CO thought he could really do it and agreed to put him on light duties and transferred him to a base in New York, where he'd been accepted to attend school. He was going to chase his dream of becoming an engineer on an aircraft carrier. He's now three years into that and has no regrets with his choices. He loves the Navy and cannot wait to get back to active duty.
