DISLIKES: Nosy people, being interrupted when he’s studying, flower shops, coming home to a cold home, insane crowds, long times spent sitting, mango chutney, the taste of gin, a crowded gym, smoothies, not finishing a game, strong smells in the house, noisy people in quiet places, feeling hungry in class, the smell of paint.

PERSONALITY: Shane is practical, both in the way he thinks and approaches life. He’s creative enough that he can MacGyver just about anything in a pinch (though less saving the day and more like unjamming a coin slot). He’s kind of reserved around people he doesn’t know and it takes some time for him to warm up to the point where he can chat candidly with them about himself. Patient, Shane is perfectly okay with taking the time to make something work right. He’s very much of the mindset that slow and steady wins the race. Intelligent, Shane can pick up new information fairly easily, and is often quick to put it to use. He’s a bit of a geek with anything RPG based or fantasy related. It’s his escape and for a long time he needed it. Shane likes to keep his hands busy, whether it’s with a book, tinkering with a PC build, or playing on his phone; he feels awkward and anxious if he sits still for too long. He’s not in the least bit confrontational. He’s got more of a flight than fight instinct in him. Shane honestly just tries to avoid tense situations as best as he can, and is typically long gone before they escalate. He’s surprisingly confident when it comes to matters of the heart, though it doesn’t always mean he’s lucky. Some girls haven’t liked that he’s very forward in regards to his feelings (both good and bad).MOTHER: Nancy Joseline Ó Rabhartaigh, 49.

SIBLINGS: Eibhlin Saoirse Ó Rabhartaigh, 24.

HISTORY: Cormac came to Texas with his parents as a kid after leaving Ireland behind in the early days of the troubles. He eventually met Nancy when her mother’s car broke down close to his father’s garage. He met Nancy when he was in his twenties, when her car broke down not far from the garage he had taken over from his father. There was an age gap that caused her parents some concerns, but Cormac had his life sorted. He had a home, a stable job and income, and wasn’t the type to step out on her. Nancy went off to college to become a qualified nurse and when she came back Cormac proposed. They were married within the year and soon after had their daughter, Eibhlin, and then a son, Shane.
Shane loved tinkering around with his dad’s tools and the bits and parts that were always floating around the garage. He never built anything as a kid, but he would lay it out as though he had done something. He was keen to help his dad around the house with DIY projects and decorating, but he always found himself tinkering again. His parents knew from that moment that it was his future assured, and they hoped he would go into engineering. Cormac hadn’t been bothered by being pushed into automechanics, but he didn’t want to do the same thing to his son. If Shane had grown up and been keen to follow in his footsteps, then it would have been nice, but Cormac also had apprentices and guys who he knew could handle the company and keep the name going once he chose to retire.
Shane was the type of teenage boy who looked far worse than he was. He had the shaggy hair, the DMs, and when he was old enough, his father fixed up a bike for him. Shane loved riding along the coast roads with his friends. There were five of them who had all worked their asses off to get the motorbikes they wanted. It was an adventure that added leather jackets to their outfits and caused some of the more conservative families to warn their daughters away. Shane found it funny since the worst trouble he had ever been in was detention after being caught skipping out on math class. He actually made good grades and was considered the “geek” of his little friendship group. It was all teenage boys making digs at each other with no malice behind it. Shane actually made a bit of money from them when he began building computers as a weekend hobby. They each paid for the parts and Shane built them so they could spend the bad weather days hanging out without being accused of causing trouble.
He was going to work at the garage for a year after high school, choosing to defer his place so he could get a good chunk of savings built up. The Engineering courses he had applied to were gruelling, and he figured having a nice pot of savings would help him out a lot if he didn’t have the time to work. It was a safety net of sorts, and one Cormac and Nancy considered very responsible for a boy who was fresh into his senior year at the time.
Some of his friends went on to colleges, and two stayed in town, working like Shane. They didn’t know what they wanted for their future but figured Shane had the right idea in saving up the money before they made that choice. Shane was glad that he had some people to hang out with still, since riding out alone was often pretty dull for him unless he needed to clear his head.
It was autumn, closing in on Halloween, when the trio decided to head to San Antonio for a concert. They were on the highway, thirty minutes into the hour journey when the pickup lost control and spun into a Toyota. It was a busy time of day and everyone on that stretch of road ended up being a part of the crash. Drivers either swerved off the road, into the embankments, or they were rear ending each other. The boys were up close to the crash, and they were knocked and swerved to try and avoid the carnage. Shane was knocked from his bike and sent skidding along the road, adding more that the drivers needed to avoid. His bike hit him as it followed his body and Shane ended up rolling off the road for safety. It could have been worse if he hadn’t been in his biking gear, but as it was, it was already bad. Shane remembered laying there, catching his breath and wondering what the hell happened. His friends reached him and told him not to move. He hadn’t understood why at first, but the shock was numbing the pain. Despite having the appropriate clothes and get up for being on his bike, he was still badly injured. Shane hadn’t realised quite how far he had been thrown from his bike, or just how far he had skidded. His left leg was covered in blood, ripped up skin and cloth. His back wasn’t much better, getting some bad damage after his jacket and top had ridden up.
Shane woke up in the hospital to a doctor telling him it could have been a lot worse. His mother, being a nurse, was already prepared to take her son home and look after him. He was stitched up, given crutches and pain medication, warned to take it easy. No one died in the crash, thankfully, but it still lingered with Shane. He never got on his bike again, and he was self-conscious about the scarring left from the crash. His leg, even though it healed well, looked mangled, and his lower back again looked like he had lost a fight with at least two bears.
He still managed to get to college on time, his father insisting on paying him what had originally been calculated, even though there were twelve weeks where he had been at home, in a medical stupor, sleeping more than he was awake. Shane moved into a small apartment in New York City. He was going to stay in the dorms, but he wasn’t comfortable with the idea of his scars being on show. People back in Bandera had at least known what had happened to him and his bruised up friends, but New York would be a city full of strangers with questions. Shane just wanted to get on with school.
He worked a few jobs on the NYU campus, went to class and built up a new friendship circle. He never turned his back on his friends from home, and he was always in touch with them, but New York was a hell of a lot different from home and he needed people there to help him with that. He settled into a rhythm, unsure of what his future might be after college, but taking each day as it came, working from deadline to deadline. It’s easier that way.
