HISTORY: The mess of a family that Alexander was born into left him confused when he went to school and saw families of three or four, happy and spending every weekend together. His parents were divorced before Alex went to school, and there seemed to always be some other sibling or a new face whenever he visited his dad. Kristina spent a lot of time on the phone, working from home. She was a PR agent so things seemed to always keep coming her way, leaving her with little time for her son. That was how Alex came to spend a lot of time with her mother’s brother, Barney. Barney’s only love in life was baseball, and he had all the time in the world for his nephew. He liked it because it was the one place where he was listened to. His parents were too busy, either with work or with their next catch. His siblings, as close as he was to some of them, were loud, and so many of them existed that it was always a crowd during the holidays. Alex spent all of his with whatever family Christian was on at the time, like many others, because Kristina would be working or have events to show her face at.
When he was thirteen, Alex was staying with Barney when the neighbours had the unimaginable happen. They were an elderly couple, pleasant and well liked. Late at night the elderly man took a nasty fall. He went down the stairs and hit his head on a table at the bottom. The fall killed him, but it looked like something much worse than a fall had happened because of the blood. Barney had never really revealed to Alex what he did for a living, but Alex knew there were times they were supposed to do things and Barney had been forced to cancel. He had never thought much of it given his family life, but during that stay he had so much explained to him. Barney had been the leader of a crime scene clean up crew for many years, keeping that to himself since he didn’t want to scare his nephew when he was just a kid. After Alex was around for the death of his neighbour, Barney told him that he was going to need his help – if he could handle it. Fascinated by what was offered to him, Alex agreed to help. Barney wanted to clean the house up before the wife of the deceased came back home with her daughters. Barney had spoken to the cops when the house was released after they were certain there had been a terrible accident and nothing more. Alex ended up being fascinated while Barney explained how everything had to be cleaned, how simple it was to miss a spot. Barney told him so much over the weekend that they completely erased every trace of death from the home.
It stuck with Alex for many years, and he went through school knowing he was going to follow in Barney’s footsteps. His teachers told him that he could do more, and his friends were always wanting to know why a boy full of life and laughter would do something so dark. Alex knew though that someone had to do it. He knew that it could bring so much relief to a family going through some of their worst moments in their lives. It was hard to explain, but he knew what he wanted and why he wanted it.
Alex went to college in New York where he studied forensic science to understand deeper the field of work he was going into. He also figured it wouldn’t hurt if he needed to go into another sort of area of forensics. He also found a course specific for cleaning crime scenes. Alex did that course at night before going to a night shift porter’s job at the hospital. Alex didn’t need to work through school since both of his parents had money, but he wanted to be independent.
That desire to go out on his own stuck with him. After college he landed the job he wanted and only spoke to or saw his parents at the holidays. Barney and his siblings were always around or making plans with him, but Alex was keen to try to make something of himself, to build a life apart from the chaos he had grown up in. He loved his siblings, but he knew it wasn’t the norm and he didn’t want to meet someone to start his own family with only for them to freak out when she saw the state of his parents, of his father specifically. He wanted that life apart from that so he could have the space for his future to grow.
A decade went by, and Alex climbed to be supervisor, cleaning the scenes and restoring homes to those going through the worst grief. He dated but never met the girl of his dreams, and most of his weekends or evenings were spent with friends or his brothers and sisters. Alex came to love their big nights out, usually because no one ever believed that they were all siblings and often accused them of trying to play a prank. Alex has slowly started to embrace the eccentricity of life that he once thought was going to be the opposite of what he wanted in life. Now he knows he needs someone who can embrace that too, who can understand that he is like his family, but is also different from them.
