NOLAN DOMINIC O’BREEN
FULL NAME: Nolan Dominic O’Breen.
NICKNAMES: None
AGE: Thirty-one
GENDER: male
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Victim Advocate.HAIR: Dark brown, kept short enough to be considered neat, but most of the time his hair flops around and does its own thing.
EYES: Blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: Only those from childhood clumsiness.
TATTOOS: None.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Colin Morgan!LIKES: Summer evenings, science-fiction novels, mild spices, pasta salads, chess, cats, science and history documentaries, walking through parks, hot milk before bed in the winter, digestive biscuits, strong tea, trail mix, recycling, board games, tropical fruit salads, surprises (if they’re the good kind, obviously!), fresh baked goods.
DISLIKES: Long court sessions, people who shout constantly, when justice becomes about politics, rap music, when it’s too hot, almond milk, assembling IKEA furniture, clutter, his phone battery getting low, overpowering scents, milky tea, chocolate cake, bright clothes (for himself), showering at the gym, shopping crowds.
FEARS: Snakes, rollercoasters, heights.
SECRETS: He once ran away during a thunderstorm. He ended up hiding in some stranger’s truck until it all blew over and was lucky that the tree that fell landed behind the truck and not on it – else he’d be dead. He was back home and in bed after that before his dad and mother came home from work.
PERSONALITY: Nolan is considerate of other people, and quite often walks a selfless path; it’s part and parcel of both his personality and his job. He likes helping others in any way viable, but he also enjoys that little bit of alone time in the evenings. That helps him gather his thoughts. He prefers to be busy, even if it’s not with work. Things like chess matches in the park, or going out to clean his car and pick up groceries is enough for him to keep him stimulated. Though he’s soft spoken he’s not unsociable or shy. He just doesn’t like being so loud that every stranger in his vicinity knows his business. Nolan is the type of guy who can remain calm in stressful, emotional situations. He’s a pretty good mediator most of the time, and has never raised a fist once in his life. He doesn’t see the point when he can just walk away or talk someone down before it gets physical. He’s not a particularly lucky guy when it comes to romance since his job can sometimes call him away at all hours and he’s struggled to find someone who understands that he is quite literally paid to put other people before himself. Still, Nolan is a sweetheart and is definitely the type to squeeze in some romantic dates or lunches in whenever he gets the chance. He’s not one to dedicate his time to half assed flings and nights with women he doesn’t know the name of. He’d rather commit himself to one person than sample the whole buffet.[ MOTHER: Marjorie Janet O’Breen, 55

HISTORY: Marjorie and Bill both met at their local church during a time when both considered themselves religious followers. That continued for a little while longer into their relationship until work, family and life in general made it seem less important. There were always people trying to coax them back to the church, but Marjorie always said they didn’t need sermons and choirs to remain devout. Nevertheless, the IT technician and the Bank tele-operator didn’t force religion onto their children as they all grew up. They would speak of it whenever the kids came home with questions or asked about something (after all, life in Northern Ireland was often framed with religion), but it was never demanded of them.
Their first child, only son, and eldest of the eventual three, was Nolan. He was a quiet baby, well behaved aside from a week when he had a bad cough and couldn’t stop crying. Even when he was growing older he wasn’t the kid who gave their parents something to worry about. In their family that award went to Vic. Nolan spent most of his life picking his sister out of fights or pulling her back through a window when she thought to sneak out. He wasn’t a tattle and never told his parents when either of his siblings acted out. Instead he was the good big brother who would pick them up from parties and make sure any trouble they had was quickly made gone of.
When he was little, Nolan dreamt of being a police officer. He had a little dress up outfit and everything. After the family moved to New Orleans when he was thirteen, that changed. He was involved in an accident involving a taxi and his bicycle. While he wasn’t critically injured, Nolan did break his leg and damage the ligaments and tendons around his knee. It meant he was left with limited mobility in his right leg, and walked with just a hint of a limp afterwards. Most of the time people didn’t notice unless he pointed it out. However, such an injury forced him to consider alternative options for a future career. He still wanted to be a part of law enforcement, and by the time he graduated from high school, he had his mind set on victim advocacy. His personality was suited to it, and after a lot of thought he realised it was probably something people overlooked when the media focused on crime reports and stories.
He graduated high school with solid grades and a decent friendship circle. He didn’t go out of state for college, which meant he was always on hand when his sisters were in trouble or upset, or just needed a ride in the middle of the night. In fact, he’d vouch as much that he spent more time helping them than he did on the Psychology classes he was majoring in.
The four years of college flew by, and after that, Nolan felt ready to spread his wings. He moved to New York to do some follow up classes on victim psychology and further his skillset before he fell into his chosen career. It came slowly, but soon the NYPD had him on board as one of their own. He didn’t carry a gun or have a uniform, but they did give him a level of basic training in case he needed it at any point, and then they gave him a badge. Not a shiny one like detectives, but a laminated on that gave him access in the courts and in the precincts around New York City.
His first case stuck with him. It was a robbery, but taking so much of a family’s valued items made him see just how much crime could hurt someone, even if no one was physically hurt. Eventually, he got used to being on call for incidents, and he was all too familiar with courtrooms and going to do some mundane chore for a victim who couldn’t do it themselves. He had a binder filled with leaflets and numbers of places where help could be provided, and he went through more business cards than he went through tissues during hayfever season. Nolan never regretted making this choice though. He knew he could do a lot with this job, even if it didn’t have some high end position to end up in, or the biggest wage package in New York City. He was making a difference. He was there after the crime scene tape had gone and the cops were onto the next case. He liked it.
