DISLIKES: People who think life is easy, strong scents, sitting around all day, spicy curries, mushrooms, tight clothes, girls who wear their weight in jewellery, iced tea, know-it-alls, tourist tat, dry burgers, social media, microwavable meals, wine, suburban living, small cars, long haul flights, remakes of already good movies, idiots with guns.
FEARS: Turning into his dad, snakes, his business being plastered everywhere for everyone to see.
SECRETS: His dad was a violent man and his childhood was abusive. He still has nightmares about it every once in a while.
PERSONALITY: Nash is disciplined and active, both of which remain from his years in the military. He’s healthy and strong. Most people would call him capable and reliable, which is why he makes a good leader and a brilliant training officer. He’s loyal, the type of man who sticks close to his friends. He’ll bleed for them if he had to. Appreciative, Nash can see the beauty in each sunset, and he’s thankful for the littlest things that people do for him despite being proudly independent. He might struggle to open up and ask for help, but he’ll be grateful when others notice and step in with the little things that he needs. He’s responsible, sometimes so much so that he might miss a joke or two sometimes. However, Nash can step back and blow off some steam when he needs to. He prefers a relaxing drink with music over some hardcore clubbing session. Nash does have a temper – and it can be a bad one. However, he does his best to keep control of it. He focuses on healthy outlets so he doesn’t explode on someone who doesn’t deserve it. Nash will feel guilty if that happens, but he’ll be quick to apologise if it does happen. He’s often reluctant to engage in any romantic relationships. He didn’t have any strong role models to look up to growing up, and now he’s a little afraid of becoming like his father if he does fall into a long term commitment with someone. As such, he’ll run before his feelings can get too strong for someone. If that’s too change, it’ll have to be a woman who can stick with him and chase away his fears.MOTHER: Marlene Therese May, deceased

HISTORY: Norman was, and always had been, an intimidating, foreboding man. Marlene was meek in comparison. He controlled her in every sense of the notion. The couple never married, but Marlene played the role of doting housewife for the lout that Norman was. He was a construction worker who drank too much and he had a short temper before he consumed any alcohol. With it, he was worse. Together, they had five children who were all subjected to his nasty attitude just as much as his girlfriend was.
Nash, the second eldest, knew his home life was pathetic. He knew his mother ought to leave his dad, to stand up to him, but she had no one to support her. Everyone thought she was “out of chances” to leave. Apparently by staying and having more kids (regardless of how those kids came to be) meant she was the fool who deserved to be treated like crap. Sympathy was washed up and gone by the time Susie was born. Norman had no love for his kids. They were all trouble, all ate into his beer money, and needed to be in their rooms and out of his sight by the time dinner was over. They didn’t get new toys or clothes. Marlene had to raid second-hand stores and hold onto whatever the oldest ones outgrew to pass onto the younger kids.
It was no surprise when Bobby fell in with drugs and drinking, dropping out of high school to waste his life. It meant he stayed out all night which meant he was spared a beating or six from their abusive dad. It was all the kids had known growing up and Bobby didn’t care that when he wasn’t around it was worse for Nash and the other kids. He once said that it was every kid for themselves, but Nash never saw it that way. He loved his siblings and wanted to get his family away from Norman. The one time he reported the abuse to a teacher Marlene denied in (getting her own beating from Norman to do so) and claimed Nash was a troubled kid who fought with his brothers and the kids in the rough neighbourhood where they lived. After that, Nash lost any respect he had for his mother. He had given them a chance, provided a glimmer of hope for a way out and she had been the one to slam the door shut and keep them prisoners in their own hell.
Nash had no guidance in his life. His siblings struggled through school just like he did and as the youngest the teachers had almost come to expect that there would be no discipline from the Wiley kids. However, upon graduation Nash enlisted with the US Marines. He didn’t want to end up a jailed junkie like Bobby, or a struggling single parent with no real job like Susie. He wanted to make something of himself and to have a life he could one day be proud of. He didn’t have the grades or the funding for college, so this was his only real shot at making his life something better. He wasn’t going to be someone his dad knocked around anymore, beating on him just because the others were all grown and gone then.
Nash served and served proudly. He was grateful for every criticism and encouragement. His mother died when he was on tour. The final report said it was from a fall, but he was strongly suspecting that his father had caused that fall. The discipline that he gained from the marines helped him sort himself out, helped him clear his mind and focus himself more. He got help and he opened up to his superiors who constantly pushed and encouraged him to do more and strive for better things. Nash helped his siblings when he could, visiting them and staying with them. He stood up to his father on a few occasions, too, when he threatened to ruin the holidays or cause trouble. The family was still royally fucked up. They held onto their problems like life preservers, scared of who they might be without the trauma.
After three tours, Nash felt like he wanted something different. He wrapped up his time in the Marines and settled in New York City where he got a job as a security training officer. His military experience made him perfect for the job and plenty of companies and contracts came to him on the regular. Sometimes he even got to travel out of state for work which was something he never expected to be able to do with his life when he thought back on his past. He routinely brings his sisters and niece to New York, treating them to dinners and weekends of shows and fun, things they never had when they were younger. He’s nowhere near being a millionaire, but he can live comfortably, and he’s proud of the man he is today. His sisters would just like him to meet a woman and share that life with her.
