PERSONALITY: Effie is exceptionally well organised. She’s the type of girl who has a planner and a journal and coordinates both with highlighters and post-its. She’s feminine, but has a borderline scary love for American football which makes her seem like a completely different person from the flower arranging, stationary hoarding woman most know her to be. She’s passionate about her work, and charismatic which makes it easier for her to get a good deal or work someone else around to her way of thinking should she find them to be difficultly stubborn. She’s often mild in nature, but she can be surprisingly resolute at times, especially if someone thinks they can push her around. She’s a romantic, but has in the past been easily heartbroken because of this. She’s trying to be a little warier of the men she dates and not trust them too quickly, but the dreamer often overpowers her mostly logical mind. Still, she’s the hopeful type so she fully expects to one day meet the man she’ll spend the rest of her life with.MOTHER: Elaine Daphne, 55.

HISTORY: Elaine was a New York Socialite living the dream. Her father was a lawyer to the stars (because only they could afford him, along with crooked businessmen) and her mother had made her own wealth with some fitness range in seventies. In the every thriving business of getting in shape, hers had been one that worked without any hidden fads or secrets. So, of course, she made people pay for it in instalments like any business savvy person would. Elaine reaped the benefits of her parents’ wealth, living expensively and without much of a care. She dabbled with a fashion line but never really committed to it until later in her life. When she was young she just wanted to have fun and go to all the parties and hot spots that she was permanently on the guest list for. It was, however, at a charity gala her father insisted on her making an appearance at that she met Ivan Watson. He was English and had the business his father had started. The two got to chatting, and never shy about what she wanted, Elaine invited Ivan to her penthouse for the night after slating his hotel in the city as being abysmal. What she didn’t know – and what he didn’t tell her – was that he was married with three children and that he had met his wife at a charity gala much like this one.
They had a short lived affair. Neither of them were in it for romance, but Ivan was setting up an American partnership for his business back in London and New York was a long way from his wife. His wife who was often very tired after spending her day dealing with British high society and the whims and wishes of three very imaginative children. He didn’t consider his marriage to be in trouble, but it had hit a dry spell. He thought it would all be perfect. Up to a year flitting between the countries, spending a night or two with Elaine when he was away and then it would be over once the papers were signed and the business expanding overseas. Alas, Elaine realised that she was pregnant and that only Ivan could be the father. At first he tried to deny it, insisted that it had to be one of the other men she told him she spent time with. He didn’t believe her when she said that “spending time” didn’t mean rolling around in the sheets. In his head his world was about to come crashing down. He told her the truth – at last – and she was mortified. Elaine was a minx, but she was not a homewrecker and never wanted to be. She planned to cut off every communication with him, let her own dignity take a hit and claim it was a stranger’s kid.
Ivan came back with a plan though. He was a man who owned his mistakes, who didn’t neglect his kids. He said, if the baby was indeed his, then he would send money (“Money is not my problem…”), and be in his or her life as much as was possible without ruining the life he had in England. He planned on DNA testing, but the moment he saw the first photo of Effie he knew she was his. She looked just like Andraste and Emersyn. Elaine argued with him for years that it would be better for him to just keep away, that it wasn’t fair to Effie, but Ivan argued that she deserved to know the face of the man who was her father. They never agreed, and some of Effie’s earliest memories are of them fighting long after she had been put to bed.
Effie knew there was always something strange about her parents. Yes, they weren’t together and other kids had divorces in their lives, but whenever she asked her mom about their story she was always instantly shut down. If she pushed then she was bribed with new toys or clothes. At least having Effie focused Elaine. She managed to actually complete her fashion line and start putting together actual pieces to sell instead of half finishing them and then deciding it was time for a vacation to Greece.
Effie’s school life was okay. She had friends and made good grades but there was always a whisper that followed her. It had lingered ever since the mystery around Elaine’s pregnancy. She had kept the details of it vague, and no one really knew the truth of Ivan’s involvement. As such, people kept talking because no one had the answers. Ivan flew in once in a blue moon whenever business allowed for it. He would spend a day or sometimes a weekend with Effie before leaving again. Their relationship was awkward, littered with small talk and expensive gifts that Effie didn’t really know what to do with. The only thing he bought her that she truly loved on sight was a ring. It was nothing fancy, just a plain gold band with a rose gold rose. She knows he tried, but he didn’t know her well enough. He would think she still wanted dolls when she was into antiques (an antique doll was another thing entirely). As she got older she didn’t mind that he wasn’t around, and sometimes she was even happier when he did leave to go back to England. Of course, she didn’t know about his other family; not until she was seventeen.
When she was seventeen there was a fight. Elaine wasn’t pleased when Ivan just showed up out of the blue one day and whisked Effie out of class. They didn’t know it but some trouble at the company had seen him lose his temper at one of the admin team. Nothing came of it but he panicked and thought irrationally. When Elaine found out she flipped and Effie walked in on their fight when she came back from picking up a pizza for dinner. She overheard Elaine tell Ivan to go back to his real family. Then they had to tell her the choice. Ivan told Effie that she had a brother and two sisters, but they didn’t know – could never know – about her. Elaine explained the cruder side. How Ivan had never told her about his marriage and his life in England until she was pregnant and then how he insisted on playing this “joke” part in Effie’s life when he had the perfect family on some English estate. Effie wanted to meet them, but Ivan told her it could never happen, ever, no matter what she did. He pointed out that she didn’t know where he lived or how to contact them so she couldn’t. Elaine told him to leave them before he upset her more.
Effie longed to meet her siblings, but Elaine managed to talk her out of it. She had spent seventeen years happy without them, happy without her father being around for most of it, and she could continue to be happy without including them. Effie was doing well, making college plans and planning her future. She wanted her own event planning business. People assumed she meant weddings, but no. She wanted to arrange big business functions and conventions, work on award ceremonies and parties and then she might consider adding weddings to the things she would do.
Calm again, she put the thoughts of her siblings to the back of her mind and went off to college to study Business Management.
Life went by without too much of a hitch. She dated, cried over the boys who broke her heart and the relationships that were destined to fail. She had brilliant trips and times with friends she considered there for life. She got experience with a company before being given money by her grandfather to branch out on her own with a friend who shared her ambition. She almost forgot that there was family across the ocean that shared her blood. Until she had a call from her father one evening. Her sister, Emersyn was sick. Not dangerously so, but if the worse came to pass she would need a bone marrow transplant. Andraste wasn’t a match, and Phineas wasn’t viable for other reasons, so Ivan wanted Effie to get tested just in case. He even went as far as to planting the seeds in Emersyn’s mind to move to New York. In his head, if she did need the treatment and if Effie was a match, then it could be some miracle donor while she was living there. He hadn’t considered that other treatments might work first, that Emersyn had taken a worst case scenario and ran with it for the attention. He hadn’t considered that Emersyn would talk Andraste into moving stateside too.
In the end, Effie heard that Andraste was still in the city but Emersyn wasn’t. Effie hadn’t even finished being tested after Ivan had caused such a commotion. Effie hasn’t set out trying to meet her half-sister, but New York is smaller than it seems, and she’s aware that she looks a great deal like the blonde. Plus, in her business, there’s always a way to bump into someone – whether you want to or not.
