Ulysses had spent the last few weeks of his life almost living out of the campus library. He only left when he had a work shift he hadn’t been able to book off, and to shower and sleep in his apartment. It was slowly hitting him that he was a senior, that the big bad world was beckoning him. He felt like he knew nothing, despite always doing well in his exams, and so had buckled down the last couple of weeks to make sure all of his notes were rewritten in neater handwriting, appropriate remarks highlighted so he could find them easier, and starring the stuff he wasn’t completely confident on. He knew his future self would thank him when the final exams rolled around and he had to start thinking about law schools and choosing what it was he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He still thought of himself as a kid sometimes; a reckless kid who didn’t have a care in the world. Slowly, he was losing that view of himself, and it was a scary reality. He didn’t have some ten year plan like a few of the students in his classes. He didn’t know if he wanted to be the DA, or end up sitting at the bench listening to both sides of a criminal argument. There were still so many choices left to make and he hadn’t really thought about any of them.
He was incredibly thankful when Kensi sent him a text asking to grab some food. He had been isolated by choice for some time now and it was taxing on his mental wellbeing. Ulysses needed that break. He needed to step back from the intense studying and remember that there was a life out there for him, one that was happening right now than five years from now. He didn’t belong in a classroom 24/7. That had never been who he was. Yes, Ulysses was smart, and he retained information like a sponge held water, but he wasn’t the studious, academic type. He was getting better at it now, understanding the importance of the work and learning, but he was still an overly confident, reckless young man. Even after being run out of Flagstaff for his troublesome ways, there was a part of him that thrived on the adrenaline rush of bending the rules.
Normally, he would have suggested grabbing lunch on campus since he was already there, and suspected Kensi might have been around too. However, he needed a break from the NYU. The walk to Hal’s was brisk, the air was cool, and by the time his hand closed around the metal handle of the diner he felt completely refreshed. He grabbed a booth by the window and sent Kensi a quick message to let her know where he was, that he had them a booth, and that he was ordering shakes to get them started. He wasn’t the type who could sit around food and not have something. Honestly, he didn’t know how he managed to work at WD-50 without eating everything that came back through the kitchen. No one would think it if they looked at him, but Ulysses enjoyed his food.
