Delphi didn’t usually catch herself with a block of time off work. If she wasn’t on sets before the crack of dawn, then there was usually an awards show she had been booked for. They were less glamourous when you were behind the curtains of them, setting curls and trying not to misplace bobby pins. Most of the time she was flushed and exhausted when she was done helping an actress or presenter look their best. It took a damn team to put together an awards night look, and they were the ones who typically went on home again to watch it from a small screen. In Delphi’s case, it was home to take a long, hot bath, and walk the dogs. She had received her own number of invites to award ceremonies when the movie she had worked on had been nominated, but she couldn’t bring herself to attend too many of them. She would never dream of asking for help to get ready, and she needed the bookings to keep her savings on a side she could be happy with.
She was by no means rich, but Delphi could live comfortably and treat herself when she wanted to. She liked keeping a neat little savings account topped up just in case something terrible befell her. Her car could decide it didn’t want to run anymore, her home could be damaged from one thing or another. The news was too full of tragic stories where people had lost everything with no way to get back on their feet. Delphi couldn’t dream of that without waking up in a cold sweat, shaking. She also felt like she should keep some money aside for Francesca, just in case Savannah decided to shun her daughter like she was shunning her own sister. Delphi was just an aunt to the little girl now, but there was still that tug at her heartstrings towards her. She felt like she had to hold some responsibility for the child she had carried for nine months. Francesca would never know that, but Delphi still wanted to be there for her when the world felt like it was caving in.
With the time on her hands, Delphi was reaching out for things to do. She had a week until she was back on a set for work. All chores and errands had been completed and now she needed something else. After disposing of some dying flowers, she remembered the card tucked into her purse. Some flowers could brighten up the place since she had just had to part with the stargazer lilies from the previous week. Plus, he had mentioned a doggy play date, and Delphi would prefer to see him in person if he was still interested in that. If his life was like hers people came and went all the time and it was hard to keep up with who was who.
Delphi grabbed her jacket, leaving the radio on for Ayra and Hattie. She must have checked the business card a dozen times for the address. Soon she was there, feeling a little anxious about walking in and asking if the owner remembered her. What if he wasn’t even working today? She swallowed her worries as best as Delphi ever could and then pushed open the door. The scent of flowers hit her immediately and she took a moment to look at all the colours on display before she walked to the desk. Thankfully, she could see Nixon over it. “Hi.” She began timidly. Her plan right now was to gauge his response and if he seemed clueless she could just ask him for bouquet recommendations.
