DISLIKES: A messy kitchen, turbulence on flights, driving in the rain, strong floral scents, when it’s wet and cold, frozen ready meals, plastic chairs, jokes at the expense of other people, badly behaved patrons, cheap knock offs, lazy workers, retirement homes, waking up before he’s rested, taking medicine, beef jerky.

SECRETS: He keeps rice crackers under his bed for those midnight munchies.
PERSONALITY: Rhodes is a laidback kind of guy. He’s open-minded and patient with people; something he thinks a lot of New York lacks at times. He’s adventurous and loves seeing what he can do or find when he goes somewhere; he’s not all business. He is hardworking though, or else he wouldn’t have all that he does at this time of life. Rhodes is passionate about what he does, be it cooking or surfing or anything in between. He’s not the type to waste his time with something that won’t grant him fulfilment or happiness. He’s calm in the chaos, and is a take charge kind of guy since he can keep a cool head when everyone else is panicking or angry. He’s a born leader, and thank god he has his own kitchen or else someone would be hating him for going off on his own to add his own twist to everything. He’s creative to a point, but his art is cooking, not something that could hang in a gallery. He can be firm but he’s not the type to go off the deep end – at least not easily. He’ll be honest with people, and he’s loyal and respectful to those he spends time around. His temper is barely existent, but he can hold his own if something comes his way (normally an entitled customer trying to storm the kitchen). He’s a charmer, and when it comes to matters of the heart he likes to plan big gestures that are also unique at the same time. Some people think that sort of thing is too much too soon, but Rhodes doesn’t affiliate kindness with demanding marriage and a life together. He just wears his heart on his sleeve and when he cares for someone he enjoys showing them that.MOTHER: Francesca Hailey Flynn, 59.
FATHER: Charlie Weston Flynn, 62.
SIBLINGS: Leon Desmond Flynn, 35.
OTHERS: N/A.
PETS: Felix, a mix breed cat that he rescued.
HOMETOWN: Kuta, Bali.
HISTORY: Charlie was a traveller. If he had his way he would envision himself as Indiana Jones, but unfortunately his adventures included more alcohol and law breaking – not to mention less hidden treasure and cursed temples. However, during his travels he met Francesca; a young woman who worked in a bar on the island of Bali. He said things to her not unlike what she had heard from other patrons before. He vowed to come back to the island, to sweep her off her feet once he was done travelling with his friends. He left and she never expected to see him again. Charlie was back six months later. He walked right on over to her and asked if she had missed him. She didn’t know what to say or even do. So she just slapped him. It was a reaction, albeit a bad one. Thankfully, he saw the funny side of it and a few dates later they were happy together. He had sold everything he had left to come back and try to have a relationship with it. It was a crazy move, he knew that without being told it, but he was impulsive and spontaneous. He jumped in without knowing how deep the waters were.
A few years later and they had their own bar and Francesca had taken Charlie’s name. She was also sporting a sizeable bump as they expected their first child. Their first born was a son, Leon. It was five more years before they had their second – and last – child. Rhodes was a nice surprise for the family when he came along.
He grew into a good kid, even if he was a little adventurous. He was up trees when an adult turned their back and he was cannonballing into pools when he could barely even swim. Still, for all his mischievous ways, people still loved him. He was a natural born charmer, and as such it was pretty easy for him to become one of the popular crowd. He wasn’t trying for it, nor did he crave it like some kids did when they were going through the school system. It just happened. He was a nice guy, always cracking jokes, and up for a laugh. He was active with surfing and he looked good. Rhodes was blessed in a way that meant he didn’t need braces, and outbreaks of acne were once in a blue moon.
His passion was cooking though. Even from a young age he would be bouncing around in the bar’s kitchen, asking if he could help, or why they were putting certain spices in those dishes. When he was old enough he was allowed to really help out, prep some of the veg and start learning the ropes. Rhodes loved every second of it, and it sure beat waiting on tables like Leon did. Rhodes enjoyed chatting to people, but clearing away glasses and dishes was not his cup of tea. Plus, the tourists could act like the rules didn’t belong to them, or like their moral compasses were in the wrong direction. He learnt everything he could from the chefs in the kitchen, and after that he was ready to consider his future. It would be culinary, that much was guaranteed.
Rhodes went to UCLA to study business, and while doing that he got his culinary credentials from another school. It kept him crazy busy, but that was how he liked to be. He worked in a restaurant kitchen and soon realised that he wanted to be the guy in charge. So, that was what he aimed for. He did everything that he could to make the right connections and impress the right people. It was through that, coupled with his hard work, that he was able to open his own restaurant in New York City when he was twenty-seven. Rhodes wasn’t creative so the place was simply called “Rhodes”. Still, the place took off and he became enough of a success that people wanted to eat his food. He was even offered the chance to write his own cookbook, which he agreed to do, but he wanted to take the time to put out all the recipes that were different from the norm, but they were still easy enough for the regular person to make at home without breaking the bank or their cooking equipment.
The book gave him the chance he needed to head back to Bali. He loved going home, but the trips were only short until he made something of himself. Then he was able to take the longer breaks, travel to find suppliers and people he wanted to work with. He had a good team at the restaurant who he trusted to look after the place in his absence, and Rhodes checked in more than enough times to make sure he didn’t need to catch the next flight back.
Now, he’s putting the finishing touches on that book, and still improving his own restaurant. He’s thinking about opening another in a few years, but until then he’s putting his heart and his soul into the ever bustling kitchen that he has.
