ASHTON GIDEON HAWTHORNE
FULL NAME: Ashton Gideon Hawthorne.
NICKNAMES: Ash
AGE: twenty-six
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A
MAJOR: N/A
JOB OCCUPATION: Tattoo Artist at Three Kings.
HAIR: A light shade of brown. Usually kind of shaggy, sometimes partly shaves one side of his head, and likes to have a longer bit to put in a ‘Jedi style’ plait. Most days he washes it and then leaves it to do as it pleases while he goes about his day.
EYES: blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: Nothing worth mentioning.
TATTOOS: On his left arm he has a jet black double-band armband with a triangle on the inside of his forearm, just below the elbow. A harp with an olive branch tied to it is on the outside of his forearm, trailing down to hallway around his wrist. He also has a copyright symbol on his wrist, too. On the inside of his forearm he has a pathway sort of pattern that leads to the word “ALIVE” in block lettering on his wrist. His right arm is a full sleeve that he’s been worked on for the past year. He has a full chest piece; a centre diamond with wolves on both sides, and roses all around the design. Just above his right ankle he has a Khamsa tattoo which leads into a calf piece he’s currently getting worked on, it goes down to his right foot, too, where’s there’s a tattoo of Link from Legend of Zelda..
PIERCINGS: Both earlobes.
PLAY-BY: Andy Glass!
LIKES: Legend of Zelda games, tattoos, rock music, parties in general, tea leaves, travelling, marine life, the ocean, going home, dogs, sketching, imagination, island legends, scuba diving, Jägermeister, shorts, summer, goofing around, the city at night, his job, playing bass guitar in the band, collecting junk on nights out, street art, decorating anything and everything, the beach, grilled cheese, nachos, Star Wars, skateboarding.
DISLIKES: animal cruelty, judgemental people, poor tattoos, remakes of classic movies, ignorance, feeling lazy, losing his voice, bad storms, missing a call from his parents, when sentimental trinkets break, attention seekers, pigeons, cheesy pop music (unless he’s arsing around), grumpy people, those who don’t appreciate life, feeling stuck, bullies, seeing children cry, chick flicks, umbrellas, bathroom scales, hangovers that aren’t worth it.
FEARS: hurricanes, pigeons, getting stabbed.
SECRETS: He’s a pretty open guy, and would probably talk about this sort of thing if he felt comfortable enough, but Ash is actually looking forward to settling down one day with the right girl and having a family of his own.
PERSONAILTY: Ash is artistic, which is one of the reasons why he’s successful at his profession and why he sees everything in his life as a blank canvas to work upon. He’s ridiculously laidback and often when everyone else around him is panicking or getting worked up over something, he’s the one sitting back and inviting them all to play drinking games. He may not seem like he takes life seriously, but he just doesn’t see the point in letting the bad stuff grind you down. Most of the time he can let it slide right off his back, making him quite the calm soul, but not everyone appreciates his casual approach to life. If something does get under his skin then he expresses it through art, or calls his parents if he can reach them. He’s a party animal at any given chance, making the most of his youth, although he does have every intention of settling down one day when he feels like he’s met the right person. Despite what a lot of people might think, and he does know how badly people can judge appearances, Ash is a total sweetheart. He’ll do anything for the people he cares about and goes out of his way to make sure that the folks in his life are okay. Totally loyal, Ash can sometimes be a little too trusting of people, but then he believes in people and would rather give them the benefit of the doubt than lock them out. He sees himself as an open book; he doesn’t really have any secrets and if someone asks him a question about his life then he’ll give them an honest answer. Ash doesn’t have anything to hide and is rather modest; he doesn’t think himself anything special. His feet are firmly on the ground, but his imagination can get away with him from time to time, but he believes that to be a good thing, even if other people don’t agree. He can be a bit of a goofball around his friends with dares and silly antics, and often lets out a geeky side that harbours his love for Star Wars and video games! Since this is the side most often seen, it can be hard for some people to take Ash seriously, even when he’s trying to be serious. He’s not a violent guy and it really does take an awful lot to get him to throw a punch, but he won’t sit back during a confrontation either, even if he’s not directly involved. If he’s not telling someone to back off, then he’ll be helping break up a fight; he just doesn’t understand what physical violence solves. He’s a pretty peaceful kind of guy. Romantic isn’t a word that could be used to describe Ash, but he does know how to treat a girl right. His ideas of dates might not be fancy restaurants and expensive trips, but he can make date nights interesting and definitely makes his date feel special, so long as she’s willing to give him a little trust.

HISTORY: When Elliot and Georgina met, Georgina was fresh out of college and had an internship with the marine conservation project Elliot had been working on since his own graduation from college. Neither believed in love at first sight, but they did believe in the chemistry and the sparks that flew between them from the moment they met. They never planned to have a baby, never even thought further than six months into the future, but fate had another plan in mind for them and that plan meant that little Ashton was going to come along completely out of the blue. Dating for six months, Georgina thought the sickness was down to being out at sea on the boat for months, but upon her return to the island she was shocked to find out that she was pregnant. Elliot already knew that he was falling hard for her, so staying with her, raising a baby…it all just felt right.
Ashton was a healthy, screaming, baby and his parents married just before his first birthday. He was only two when he first went to sea on a day trip with his family, but soon that boat would be the place he called home. Elliot earned funding from the Institute of Marine Biology to launch an expedition to study some of the more elusive creatures of the ocean. He took his family with him, since Georgina was already his ideal partner for the job and neither of their families lived in Hawaii to leave Ash with them. So, the little boy’s earliest memory turned out to be dolphins swimming alongside the boat while his mother sang to him after he had fallen on the deck and hurt his knee.
Follow up studies followed each expedition and each time Ash accompanied his parents. During his time away from the mainland, he was tutored by his mother who taught him more than he ever needed to know, not just about education but about life in general. As he got older he got to ask more questions, see more things and swim in the blue ocean with some of the very animals his parents studied and protected. When they did return to the Pupukea, it was only ever for a few months at a time, so he attended school while his parents worked, but ask him and every time he would answer that he would prefer to be on the boat.
This was his life for over a decade. As he got older he helped out more on the trips, learnt more about the animals and fell in love with the ocean just as much as his parents had. He kept up with his education and discovered that he had quite the artistic ability. It started out with his mom giving him a sketchpad and pencils to keep him occupied when she needed to help Elliot with the study, and Ash would draw the animals from memory; dolphins, fish, sharks, whales…over time they improved and his parents noticed that he had a knack for the details, even getting the shading perfect as his images became more detailed and less childlike. When his parents didn’t need him to help and it wasn’t interfering with his studies, Ash pretty much spent all of his time engrossed in the sketchpad.
When he was seventeen, he spent a full year at school on the mainland since Elliot had agreed to step in to replace an old professor who had suddenly passed away. Kids there already knew him since he flickered in and out throughout the course of the school year, but none were really his friends. A few had been when he was younger, but obviously as times changed and peer pressure developed, Ash was sort of the odd boy out. Still, he tried his best, made decent enough grades in his classes and excelled in the art rooms. He made a few friends, but was never sporty or popular. Most of the time he would laugh at the rumours that were spread about him for the way he would suddenly vanish over the years. Some thought he had gone to prison, others that he was sick, some were even weirder than those, and it took a while to convince them that he actually spent most of his life in the middle of the ocean. During this senior year, he really started to find himself, playing bass guitar in a band he now recognises were terrible, but gave five guys an excuse to hang out and form a friendship. He got his first tattoo for his eighteenth birthday and his love spread from there for the ink and the designs and everything else remotely related to body modification.
When it came time for the college applications, Ash didn’t know what to do. He was curious, yes, but he had never been wholly invested in a certain career. For a long time, his parents thought he might follow in their footsteps and become a Marine Biologist, but it was an idea that had vanished from his thoughts in the last days of his childhood. He loved the ocean, the animals and being at sea, but it had been his whole life and he was scared that a career might take the memories from him and turn them into something less. His next option was art, and with nothing better, he went with that option. He was still completely unclear about his future at that point, so sticking to what he was good at seemed like the best option.
He was in his sophomore year, sporting more ink on his body and completely loving the life he had for himself when he finally realised what he wanted to be. He had designed his tattoos carefully, gone to a reliable artist who was one of his good friends, and it was during a session there that he realised that he could happily spend the rest of his life making art on people’s skin. Consulting with his parents when they returned from their latest trip, he dropped out of college and spent the summer travelling across America. They were supportive of his idea and told him to do whatever would make him happiest. They had raised him well, which is why he took the “soul-searching” trip to try and decide if this really was the best option for him. It was only when he landed in New York, with his bag and his beaten up car that he really knew for sure. He found an apprenticeship with a great tattoo parlour, and his parents paid the first few months of rent for him on a spacious, but modest apartment.
Really, from that moment on, Ash has never looked back. Six years on and New York is currently his home, but he makes the journey back to his hometown at every chance he has. He’s still close to his parents, calls them whenever they’re on land and spends most of his days at Three Kings, doing the job he loves most. His own body art has come a long way since those apprentice days and his colleagues aren’t surprised if he strolls in with a new design for one of them to put on him. He loves his life, wouldn’t change a second of it and has every intention of making the most of every second he has. !
