PERSONALITY: Alasdair is a polite guy, raised with good manners and a kind heart. He’s the helpful sort who never turns anyone away when they need assistance. He’s easy going, and likes to keep things simple in his life. He’s got no time for personal drama, and he’s not fond of keeping friends who like to live their lives like some reality TV show either. He’s a home comforts kind of guy, and really prefers a night in to a night on the town. However, that’s just for socialising and city life. Alasdair grew up with nature surrounding him and so he’s still very much the outdoorsy type. He likes educating himself and believes there’s always something new to learn, be it about a culture or about science and the earth. He’s a bookworm and has a lot of well read books in his apartment. He’s a productive man and doesn’t like being lazy himself. He doesn’t have a problem with other people relaxing and lazing about, but he can’t stand himself sitting around doing nothing without a good reason. Alasdair keeps himself out of trouble as much as possible, even going as far as to tell friends not to get him involved. He really just wants a peaceful life, especially after his job keeps him around the not so pleasant sometimes. Alasdair is a sweet guy, especially when it comes to love. He prefers to keep the details of his love life to himself mostly, just because he’s not a fan of other people butting in on his life. He’s the type who prefers a cosy night in to a night on the town, cuddling by the fire or walking through the park. He likes to get to know someone through stories and talking, picking out the small things that he can turn into romantic gestures along the way. He’s not the type who wastes time with short lived flings and meaningless hook ups.MOTHER: Nadine Viola Johnson, 50.

HISTORY: George and Nadine knew each other when they were children since their fathers worked neighbouring farms. As the years went by they grew up together, and slowly, sweetly fell in love. When George’s father passed from an undiagnosed heart condition when George was just twenty-four, Nadine was there to console him, and soon moved in with him when he asked her to marry him. They wed and worked the Johnson farm together, improving upon what had been his father’s legacy. They had their first child, a son, after a few years of wedded bliss, and as time went on their family expanded to include two daughters.
Alasdair loved growing up on the farm. He had a bit of a trek to school each day, one that was annoying and bitter in the winter, but living in the northern countryside also meant he had his fair share of snow days. He loved the outdoors, the animals, and helping out on the farm when he wasn’t being too much of a pest for his father. Over the years as he got older, he took on more responsibilities around the farm, especially during the school holidays. Alasdair actually liked being there, and he looked forward to the day when he was able to actually have more control of the business there. He was truly a country boy at heart. He didn’t care if he was covered in dirt, smelling of the soil, or out in the rain; that was how he liked his life. The rest of his generation were growing up with ever changing technology, but Alasdair had very little interest in it. He preferred tractors and dogs, plants and early morning feeds.
Then, when he was seventeen, a harsh winter came in over the peaks of the Lake District. A fourteen year old girl by the name of Amelia Povey went missing from a neighbouring village and he helped out with the search parties to try and find her. He listened to the stories about her. She was troubled, her parents were going through a divorce, and she was bullied at school because of how she dressed and the music she liked. Time went by, and the winter kept battering back their searches. The wind and the snow meant they couldn’t go high into the hills, and many parts of the valleys were inaccessible. Everyone clung to the hope that if they were inaccessible to the search parties then maybe they had been inaccessible to Amelia, too. No one could leave their homes without seeing one of the missing posters, or turn on the TV without the local news showing her heartbroken parents.
Winter turned into spring, and there was still no sign of Amelia. The searches became less frequent and life slowly started to return to normal as police began to look further afield. Alasdair fell back into routine on the farm, and one cool, crisp morning he was letting the sheep back out to the further fields that were unused during the winter. While he was out there, one of the working dogs started barking and he went to see what was causing the pup to make such a fuss. He found Amelia. She was at the bottom of a small ditch that had once been a brook and ran along the edge of the land border. It was obviously she had been there for some time, her belongings and school uniform blasted by the elements. Alasdair was almost sick, but he ran back to the farm as quickly as he could, and called the police before he was finally sick in his mother’s kitchen. Ushering his sister’s up to their rooms, Alasdair told his father what had happened and they waited for the police before showing them where the body had been found.
The ditch was blocked off from late autumn, before Amelia had gone missing. Alasdair’s family stopped using the far fields for their cattle and their harvest in September. Alasdair explained how it was locked down, how the footpath that ran alongside it became treacherous in the winter, and how no one could get through the farm without being noticed. An investigation revealed that Amelia had taken her own life, that there was a note in her rucksack for her parents, and that she had been there since December when she initially went missing. She had bruises and scrapes from making her way out there via the closed off footpath, and it was ruled that no one could of thought to go there until the spring when Alasdair stumbled upon the body.
For a long time after that Alasdair had dreams about the discovery, struggling to come to terms with it. He had to go out to the field most days and it was an unavoidable task in his life. There were whispers in the village, people asking questions and offering sympathies. It was such big news in a small community that it was going nowhere for a long time and it bothered Alasdair a great deal. He was eventually sent to stay with his grandmother in Scotland for a short break where she lived in a small cottage on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It didn’t help him a lot, but he did slowly come to realise that he wanted to make sure that people didn’t end up lost for months while their loved ones grieved and worried over them. He just didn’t know how to go about helping.
In the end, when Alasdair was twenty, he travelled. He had done a few years of university while staying at home, but he needed to figure himself out. He knew he still wanted to help people, but it was very difficult to follow that ambition when there wasn’t really a starting point for him. With a childhood friend they crossed America in a hire car and just tried various things like food and hobbies that weren’t so big back home. It was when they hit the east coast, riding on up to Vermont that they were stopped by a road block. A couple had gone missing on a hiking trail and people were being asked if they had seen them. Alasdair and his buddy were only just coming into the area, but he instantly had flashbacks to Amelia and knew he needed to help. He joined a search party forming at the base of the trail and searched longer than most of them, eventually finding a backpack belonging to one of the hikers. The pair were rescued by the morning, having gotten lost in a sudden rainstorm and veered off the trail into a cave after one of them slipped and twisted their ankle. Alasdair was revealed they were mostly unharmed, and he began asking questions of the people who were professionals in this kind of search and rescue. He shared his own story and soon had information about pursuing Emergency Management as a career.
In the end, only his friend returned to the UK. Alasdair stayed, completing Visa paperwork and going through everything he needed to becoming a EMA. He relocated to New York City for ease and got himself a dog that was trained to help him when he was called out on Emergency rescue calls. He found a good apartment, settled into a routine that suited him nicely. He missed the farm and the English countryside, but Alasdair felt like this was something he needed to do before he could really settle with his life. He needed to do it for the seventeen year old boy who found Amelia after months of searching. One day he knew he would go back to the farm and that way of life, but until then he wanted to do this, to help people, and feel something different.
