Lulu hadn’t made an easy choice in leaving Columbus, Ohio. Running away was the cowardly thing to do, but that didn’t make it the easiest thing. She had broken her own heart some more with every mile she put between herself and Journey. She still loved him, even after all this time. She just couldn’t go back home now. There was no way to explain herself and explain that she had been pregnant when she had left. Lulu didn’t even know how to tell the man she loved that she was so sorry for breaking his heart, but also that he was a father now. Their little boy looked equal parts like them both. It was as though Jack was the perfect balance of both his mommy and his daddy. At first Lulu had been convinced he was all Journey, but as he got older she saw his features change and alter. Now he laughed just like her, but smiled exactly like the daddy he didn’t know. It killed her to see him happy because of the resemblance, but at the same time she couldn’t begrudge her son his childhood. She wanted him to laugh and grin all the time, even if it left her fragile heart tired and damaged beyond repair.
Her therapy was her music. It was hard to keep up with it when she had Jack running around now and a job to work. Without Hal’s there would be no food on their table or a roof over their head. Sometimes the extra hours were needed to cover a surprise bill, or pay for Christmas and birthdays. Lulu wasn’t afraid of hard work, but she hated having to neglect her passion; her music. She still longed to be on the stage, her guitar resting in her lap while she poured her soul into one of her own songs. It felt so relaxing to turn her worries and pain into something with a melody and rhyme. It wasn’t always easy to get on stage and sing her most intimate numbers with a club full of strangers, but Lulu knew she wasn’t the only young woman out there with a broken heart. She wasn’t the only person to make sacrifices. If her music could help those strangers then it was worth those few short minutes of butterflies in her stomach.
Tonight, she had one of her usual slots at Font. It only happened once a month at this particular venue, but Lulu saw it as a stepping stone to her dream. Moira didn’t mind watching Jack since he was already in bed by the time Lulu left. She had wanted to fall into her own bed tonight, but she wasn’t the type to call in sick or cancel a gig. Instead she gave herself a pep talk in the bathroom mirror and promised to keep everything light tonight. She took to the stage when it was time and did a quick introduction that was far from some of the loud, obnoxious openings some bands did. All of her songs were about what she had been through, be them ballads or more up-tempo. She kept it mostly chilled tonight, getting through her set with a laidback vibe so she didn’t overexert herself in her already tired state. After her last number she gave a quick goodbye and made a fast exit from the stage for the next act to replace her. Lulu’s plan was to grab her things and head home. Her bed sounded so good right about now.
