PERSONALITY: Kian has always been and probably always will be a huge nerd and he's absolutely okay with that. In fact, it makes him quite happy. He was a shy boy growing up, sticking to the things he knew well and studying them thoroughly. He's not so shy anymore, having grown out of it thankfully. But he's still a proud geek, just one who can speak in public without breaking out into a nervous sweat. He's a closet jock these days, working out to clear his mind and let the ideas flow through. He can be quite inept when it comes to mundane conversation, he doesn't give a damn about the weather, but he is quite active with other subjects; it just might take a bit to figure it out. He's not going to lie, he can be very awkward but he tries his best to be more social. He's a brilliant an with dozens of thoughts and ideas coursing through his brain at any given time. Too often he finds himself blurting something out that has nothing to do with the conversation at hand but he's always quick to apologise for it, too. He's a lovable little nerd. With the group of friends who understand his eccentricities, he can be quite comical but not everyone gets it. And romance is not something that's been free flowing. He's had a couple girlfriends through the years but no one he's really wanted to try being romantic with, pulling out all the stops. Maybe one day but so far none of the women who had been in his life in any romantic capacity had brought the flowers and candies and planning out of him.MOTHER: Naomi Presley & fifty one.

HISTORY: No one can quite remember how or why Naomi and Lachlan met and decided to marry. At one point they must have been happy together. Maybe money got in the way, maybe work. Kian didn't know and he wasn't going to spend his life trying to figure it out. But thy must have been happy enough to have two children, even if they weren't exactly active parents. Kian didn't know if that love had lasted for if it really was a marriage of convenience, perhaps they were a one-night stand that resulted in a child and a quick shot gun marriage. Not even his grandparents spoke of their relationship. All Kian knew was that he'd been born and then a year and two months later, Althea was born. And once Kian found out about the affairs, when he'd been about fifteen years old, he started to wonder if his parents were even his parents at all. His mother, certainly but was Lachlan his father? Was he Althea's? Being lonely was probably the real reason he'd found solace in the nerdier things in life and hadn't taken up a sport more difficult than soccer, playing for the school's team.
Kian had always known what he wanted to find a career in after a class in primary school. He'd been about ten years old and the teacher was trying to teach them about World War Two, especially how each side used coded messages to get information to their troops. It piqued his curiosity and he asked tons of questions. Sadly, the teacher wasn't nearly as knowledgeable as Kian would have liked and instead, took his questions to the local library. Mrs Cole showed him all the books they had and two by two, he borrowed them and read through them thoroughly, each time bringing them back for the next pair and then started over again. It wasn't enough, Kian wanted to know everything he could, he even created his own cipher to pass notes to his friends in class. When he was done with the books, he asked more questions was directed to a professor at the university. As he was a student at the Princeton Day School, he had a bit more access to the university and got his guidance counsellor at school to pull some strings for him. He hadn't wanted to ask his mother, though she probably would have known who to ask to talk to since she was a Professor of Literature, specialising in American Gothic. It wasn't exactly cryptology but it would have been a start. Except he knew already at sixteen that his mother was having an affair with her teaching assistant and his financial advisor father didn't exactly have room to talk about it either.
Kian found solace in the numbers and letters, enjoyed deciphering the codes. Despite having a free ride to Princeton, thanks to his mother's employment there, he chose to run away to attend Columbia. It was expensive attending the prestigious school and living in New York, even with roommates, so he walked into a modelling agency and requested to speak with an agent. They spoke, Molly took some pictures and said she'd call him if anything came up. She called four days later, letting him know he'd booked a gig as a bit of an extra in a photoshoot for Calvin Klein. It wasn't anything special but he caught the eye of the wardrobe assistant and the proverbial ball started rolling. More and more calls came through and it was quickly coming his way of paying for school and his part of the rent and utilities. For Kian it was a means to the end he had in his sights. The years seemed to fly by and he was placed in a work-study for his post graduate work.
Kian was assigned to a private school in Scarsdale, New York for his work-study. He'd been a quiet kid in high school, sticking to the nerdy clique that understood him. It wasn't actually until university that he decided he needed to get over himself and share the knowledge he had with the coming generations. He wanted to teach and so he jumped at the chance and off he went. He did his work and spent his lunch breaks in the computer lab, working still. He met a curious girl in that room one day and decided to teach her what he knew, see for himself if he could teach at all. He really only showed her silly little things, like making images dance, trying to make her laugh. She seemed lonely and maybe just a little sad. It was hard not to miss how stunning she was but he knew better than to say anything or do anything. He wasn't an idiot. When she came back to him with more questions, he tried his best to give her the information without breaking any laws that would see him behind bars. He even provided her with books from the university library, thinking they would be helpful as well. He encouraged her to pursue her interests, telling her it didn't matter if her peers didn't understand what she was up to, that she was quite skilled already and that she needed to pursue it.
He made it through the work placement with ease but moved on shortly after his required time had finished. He returned to Columbia to work, get himself a higher degree and after a couple years, he applied to a proper professor's position. Though he failed to secure the job at Columbia, he had also applied to NYU and a few other school's in the country. NYU was interested in him enough to bring him in for another interview and offer him the position he'd been coveting. He took it after negotiations over salary and the like and he hasn't looked back since. He enjoys teaching a lot more than he thought he would. He likes seeing the light in his student's eyes when they finally get what he's trying to convey to them. Sometimes it's a lot of work and some of them don't always make it to the end of the year but the ones that do, he knows they're going to go places and he can't help but feel pride at that.
